Mindrolling - Ep. 216 - Duncan Trussell, Sharon Salzberg and David Nichtern Live: beherenownetwork.com/mindroll...
================
Live from the 2017 Spring on Maui Retreat, Raghu is joined by Duncan Trussell, Sharon Salzberg and David Nichtern for a conversation around spiritual practice and the inner journey.
Show Notes
Love in Sheep’s Clothing (Opening) - Duncan Trussell tells the story of meeting Raghu for the first time, which sparked the creation of the Here and Now Podcast and the Be Here Now Podcast Network. He shares how his journey of self-discovery led him to Neem Karoli Baba and opens up about some of the difficulties of the spiritual path.
Real Love and the Soul (27:00) - Sharon Salzberg joins the stage and the shares her wisdom on the differences and similarities between the soul and what is known by Buddhists as the radiant mind. She talks about what “Real Love” is and how it can hold our difficult emotions in a way that truly transforms them.
“I was talking about “Real Love” in the context a profound sense of connection. So its like no part of ourselves is left out and no part of life is left out, it’s being fully connected.” - Sharon Salzberg
Everything Can Be a Practice (38:00) - The three talk about applying mindfulness to everything that we do. They explore how just about everything has the potential to be a practice.
Crazy Wisdom (47:50) - Musician and Buddhist teacher, David Nichtern, joins the group and conversation turns to David’s teacher, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. David talks about his time with Chögyam Trungpa and his philosophy of “Crazy Wisdom.”
“First thought, best thought was a big Trungpa saying. Get your mind clean and then some kind of spontaneous insight usually comes out.” - David Nichtern
Overwhelming Radiance (1:04:15) - The group talks about the feeling of overwhelming radiance and auspicious coincidence that happens when coming into contact with certain teachers.
“One of the things many people report when they sit in front of Ram Dass, like when they do the mala ceremony, is a kind radiance or a feeling of being overwhelmed by some kind of energetic field. People start crying and they don’t know why. There is a real feeling of intoxication that happens, it is potent and remarkable. What is that experience?” - Duncan Trussell

Correct me if I'm wrong but that story Raghu tells about Maharaji calling himself Buddha could be a misinterpretation. A similar pronounciation of the word spelled Buddha is also coincidentally slang in hindi to refer casually to 'an old man'. So there might be a fat chance that he was probably just sarcastically calling himself 'a very old man'... Not denying any possible connection but this seemed to be the logical explanation of that scenario.

I was listening to Duncan's podcast with David and because there's no comment section on Spotify, I'm here! First of all, Man, everyone of them have different form of meditation that it's confusing! And also I'm so fed up with Westerners (not all of them) using *Sanskrit and Hindi* as a bypass for sounding deeply meaningful while it only translates to simple words! Like David used "Dukha" to define this *immense anxiety and all that shit* but it only translates to "Sadness" (that you could also define as deep anxiety!)😆🤦🏽‍♀️ If I was not born in a country that reads *Holy Purans and Arti everyday* and a family that does *Akhand Ramayan Path* every few months then I would have been amused by his knowledge but it only irritates me that they use Sanskrit to *show off* these words that are just another translation!! Maybe I am judging them wrong! still they need to *Stop using our culture for business* It's only pure if they are doing it to *HELP* not to *Show off* and become some kind of *celebrity* among people who have no knowledge of what they're talking about and are too lazy to research on it!

Who says that they are only using Sanskrit to show off? Is that the truth or is that only a projection of the mind?

I have to agree with you, especially about the cultural appropriation for monetary benefit. If they truly believed in this, as the way to achieve enlightenment, why do they gatekeep it behind expensive "retreats" and books and lectures? If they really wanted enlightenment for all, it doesn't cost anything to do podcasts or live streams. Not giving equal representation to the people who this culture belongs, is not a great look. It's all wonderfully helpful and insightful information, don't get me wrong. I appreciate being able to access what I can on YT and Spotify, and I am grateful to have the means to be able to access it. But not everyone can,and it's deeply troubling to see these things co-opted by a bunch of white westerners, as if people in the east haven't been sharing this info for free to their fellow citizens for thousands of years, without monetizing it. So, I feel you. It's a real quandary for anyone who's conscious of Western Imperialism and the negative effects it has on the populations and cultures it has oppressed for centuries.

@@moongoddess235 So you think that white Westerners *shouldn't* be pushing a message of ancient spiritual teachings? Because that is drenched in ego that those teachings belong only to a certain people. And it's hard to take seriously the accusation that they're not giving Indians their dues when talking in front of an image of Maharishi while telling stories about Maharishi and the influence of is teachings. Everyone here has the greatest respect for the teachings and where they come from.

I'm also irritated by lazy translations, or lazy retelling of the Ram Dass stories. Dukkha means more than emotional sadness, or depression. In the Buddhist tradition, it is the quality of the unsatisfactory in all phenomena.

You can feel and think whatever you want !!! but that man putting his ashes on the guru!! Was not out of respect.. lol... That man looked conceited to me!! he thought he was better than other.. somebody can spit in your face and if you want to take it as a blessing, then it's a blessing !!! ...( Imagination)... But the bottom line is he did it to disrespect guru ram !!... You even said he liked Western styles!! So he knew exactly how disrespectful he was being.... That's one of the biggest problems nowadays!!! spiritual people are looked at us weak people, that anyone can disrespect!!!(cuz we will allow it)... And I know whatever the highest power could speak to us it will tell us not to allow others to disrespect us and put us down!! To avoid confrontation at any cost!! The be prepared to physically be able to hurt (in a Safe way) anyone trying to hurt you or love ones !! The way of the samurai was the closest thing to a perfect system!!... And it's gone 🧘🏻‍♂️🙏... Most people watching this are blessed they have no clue what it is to survive in a third world country!! A lot of things change perspectives completely. . For the people that think that violent evil people ,are going to stop by not selling guns !! it's pretty stupid...only good men whiling to do horrible things!! Will defeat all the evil all the pedophilia,all ............. And meditate everyday for the past 15 years!!! For the same time I've been training my body to be a lethal weapon... If we don't do anything we're just as bad as all those pedophiles....!!!.. I know it feels good to being retreat meditating!!!. First time to get dirty and we'll rescue those kids!!! As a start!!🧘🏻‍♂️🙏
