Yes! I've been doing it right! I automatically began doing this from the start, 6 months in now. My goal is always survive a roll, don't burn through energy, escape n trick out, low number taps. I used to be tapped out over 5 times! Now is less. That's always my goal. To trick and escape my rolling partner. I've even have put myself in bad situations, taken my back and arm locks. I try to escape them. I was thinking I was doing bad/ not progressing not being able to tap out anyone. Thank you! Professor.

It sounds like you are doing great if you are tapping less and escaping more successfully! Keep focusing on these concepts and look for little windows to try a sweep or reversal! Keep it up!

I'm new at BJJ, 3 months. I try to focus on defense lasting as long as possible.in between training I tend to watch KZbin videos for tips. I dont mind tapping out and just focus on relaxing and trying especially with higher belts if they let me

I completely agree. I wasted two and a half years jumping from guard to submissions over and over and over again, while not taking care of my progressions of proper: take downs, grip fighting, guard passing/retention, pins, transitions etc. I literally would jump guard into a scramble, then submission attempt immediately. My skillset suffered greatly. Against other white belts it was fine but against even blue belts, unless I was bigger than them, I was not successful. My bridges and shrimps even sucked up until two weeks ago lol. It was a long process, but it took an entire year(pandemic 2020 lockdown) of revisiting all the fundamental movements and basics to re-build my knowledge of Jiu Jitsu and it was well worth it. I actually feel like a blue belt in terms of skilset vs where I was a year ago.

@@ChasenHill Thank you. It wasn't all a loss. With so much mindless rolling, I also ended up doing a ton of defending so I still ended up being able to recognize patterns in movement and positions, submission attempts etc. so in reality, I only really need to focus on guard passing/ retention and & a little open guard & I get to my Blue belt!

Amazing video, really put things into perspectives. I'm only a 2 stripe white belt and I often find myself trying attacks like armbar but it just never works. Sometimes even if I can take someone's back, I let it slip and just can't finish. I'll change my focus and try to observe and control more. Thanks so much Chasen!

Heading to my third class. Watched this the day after my second, and now watching it before. Thanks for the advice man. Absolutely going to focus on finishing the round and try to play defensive. No idea what I’m doing yet 😅

Depending on who I’m rolling with I’m either thinking “OMG GET THIS FUCKING GUY OFF OF ME!!” Or “I should stop and get milk on the way home, I’m almost out.”

Im close to the "be patient in your submissions" phase right now. I've been spamming arm bars non stop since the day I learned them. I never get them bc I am not patient enough controlling posture before bringing my leg around. but it leads to some sweet sweeps when I hook the leg.

I really liked the video, cool. But, for me, the biggest problem is when I have to roll with another white belt (especially with one or two stripes). These tend to be very aggressive in their attack and when executing techniques (especially armbars) they injuring their partner. Twice it has happened to me in the short time that I have been practicing and it is something that makes me feel very annoyed and frustrated because I do not share that attitude and obsession with winning. Thanks, greetings.
