"According to the American Meteorological Society (AMS), a dust devil is defined as, “a well-developed dust whirl; a small but vigorous whirlwind, usually of short duration, rendered visible by dust, sand, and debris picked up from the ground.” A tornado, in turn, is defined as, “a rotating column of air, in contact with the surface, pendant from a cloud, and often visible as and/or circulating debris/dust at the ground.” The key factor is deciphering between the two is where the twister originates from. A tornado must originate from clouds. If the vortex extends from the ground to the funnel at the base of the cloud, it is then classified at a tornado. In comparison, dust devils originate from a whirlwind on the ground and typically do not grow very big." That be a dust devil... not a 'nado...

The hair standing on end is the precursor of being struck by lightning. The lightning will strike him next. If your hair stands up, lie flat on the ground. Make sure you are not the high point.

@brainfindingus Up on the mountain there is no safe place to run to. If your hair is standing on end and perhaps beginning to crackle, you have as little as half a second. Hair standing on end means the potential (electrical discharge) has built already. Make sure someone taller than you is there and get well away from that person, 50 to 100 feet. Get low. Muddy or dead, or it may pass you by, those are your real choices if your hair stands on end. I speak from knowledge and direct experience. The error was going hiking in the mountains on a doubtful day. There is no certain remedy from that first most basic error in judgement.

The guy with his hair in the air - not that good, there is a fairly famous picture of two brothers with the same effect, their standing right up, and then right after that photo was taken one of their companions died when the group of hikers was hit by lightning. Because that is what it is signaling, you are in a spot that is very, er, conductive, and you, as the highest point, could become the lightning rod at any moment. Kind of like playing Russian roulette, yes, you might be able to walk away with a funny video or photo and nothing happens. Or you might get hit. Do you really want to play that game?
