@@strastven5475 well the damage of axes would make no sense then and because of the fact that axes while slow have a very sharp edge for cutting trees and while minecraft doesnt make much sense anyways it would make much more sense for axes to do a lot damage slowly And if it were to make more sense diamond swords and axes would have a higher cooldown than wooden axes and swords because of the heft If anything attack speed should be removed for swords but not anything else

AT 13:00 you made an error. Bows made for sport today aren't powerful enough to pierce through armor and thus can be held for extended periods of time, but bows used for warfare could only be drawn for a few seconds before being shot as the curve had much more resistance in order to create power in the shot.

Okay... really lengthy comment I know, I didn't intend for it to be this long, but I had a lot to say about this. It's fine if you don't feel like reading, I just wanted to get my full opinion out. ------ You put "clearly biased" in the title of the series as a joke, but the way you frame a lot of highly subjective and divisive things in absolutes really detracts from your arguments and hurts what is otherwise a pretty good video. I've been playing MC since 2013, so I have years of experience with both versions. 1.9+ definitely is not balanced all that well, but I personally prefer it to the previous version for reasons I'll go over. This is a sentiment I'm sure many in these comments have echoed-combat effectiveness being so heavily reliant on click speed **I THINK** is mindless and unfun. Having to constantly click as fast as you can anytime you're hitting someone is aggravating and very tiring at an advanced level. Again, I say this having played pre-1.9 PvP for almost 4 years. Block hits themselves I don't have enough experience with to comment on, but relegating defensive options to an item dedicated to them makes a lot more sense in my opinion. I'd also like to address some of the things you say that I think are (as stated above) unfair and biased: - Calling the addition of attack speed "sudden and unneeded" and "dreaded" is disingenuous to both the sentiments many players had before 1.9 and what the combat update itself was trying to do. The disdain for spam clicking was present long before 1.9, and it's abundantly clear that this is the reason it was added. You and many others dislike attack speed for various reasons, but to claim its addition is illogical simply isn't true-their objective was to make spam clicking ineffective and focus more on the other elements: aiming, strafing, and crits, which they did. Whether or not this is a good thing and the new system's quality are up for debate, but there was a desire from many to implement a new system beforehand, and it *did* accomplish what it was designed to do. - 7:26 The new damage values of the weapons is imbalanced, but it most certainly doesn't "make no sense". You address attack speed and damage separately when the two go hand-in-hand. Axes deal more damage than their sword counterparts, but their speed is far lower. You state that wood axes are just as powerful as diamond swords when this is completely false, as diamond swords have double the attack speed of wooden axes, making their DPS double that of the wooden axe, which is ironically very close to how it is pre-1.9: 3 damage vs 7 damage. As for the other tools, no one uses them in combat still, same as before, so I don't understand the fuss over them. Now, again, axes above wood are significantly more effective than their sword counterparts in most situations when it comes to PvP. I do think this is a major flaw-I really like the dynamic between the fast-hitting swords and the hard-hitting axes, and swords can be more useful in some situations, but overall axes were made too powerful. This point could have been argued well, but instead you label the entire system as "bad" and "illogical", making seem like you don't really understand these mechanics, detracting from your argument. - 8:09 You show in the picture that the higher the tool tier, the faster the attack speed. I wouldn't call that "confusing and illogical". Wood and gold are the odd ones out, but the 4 highest tiers (including netherite) progress in a way that at is definitely "logical". Having done a lot of 1.9 combat, I can say with certainty that even those slight differences in attack speed on the axes can make a big difference if you're good at the game, just as you state later that tiny reach increases can also make a huge difference. - 8:30 I mean... it kind of goes without saying that having to block with a separate item is less useful than being able to attack *and* block with the same item. Just like with attack speed, that's the whole point-sword blocking was considered too overpowered (and probably too broken as well) by Mojang, so they made a new item for it. There's already a lot of complaints about how powerful shields are, so making them as universally applicable as sword blocks would be much too far. Also, if sword blocking hadn't been removed, you would be completely unable to use shields while wielding a sword, as both use right-click and main hand items take priority over those in the off hand. Shield combat is very weird to learn and somewhat janky, I'd be the first to say that, but I don't think it has any more or less merit than the regular sword duels of pre-1.9 (in fact I'd take the former any day of the week). It's just very *different* from what people were used to, which brings me to my last point. There are some big flaws with 1.9's combat, but I don't feel like those were really discussed in this video. I agree with your point about healing items and food, streak is very overpowered, but the rest feels like a blanket condemnation of the entirety of what Mojang was going for, rather than an actual critique of how well/poorly they accomplished their vision. There's definitely purpose to attack speed, damage, shields, etc, and all of those things come together to form a mode of combat that is very different in feel to what had been established before. Something a lot of people understandably have a hard time getting when it comes to games is just because something people like gets replaced by something else does not necessarily mean the new is worse. Often times those things get removed for a good reason, whether that be for balance or because it no longer fits in with the developers' vision. Such is the case with 1.9 combat: with the way the game is now, removing attack speed would not work at all because weapons now have more than 1 important attribute by default besides damage. Thanks for reading-I think this video was still well-made and I really like your other content that I've seen, I just wanted to offer a critique of your arguments here and share my full thoughts.

“The dreaded attack cool down” “A wooden axe is just as effective as a diamond sword” Let me lay it out for you. Wooden Axe: Damage: 7 Speed: 0.8 Diamond Sword: Damage: 7 Speed: 1.6. The diamond sword might as well do 14 damage when compared to the wooden axe.

yeah a lot of people don't look at the real picture. the swords technically deal less damage per hit but they have a much, much higher dps.

I can understand why 1.9 is hated because of the community already built around 1.8 (+ server issues too), but its literally just a different pvp style. I can understand why someone might prefer one or whatever but alot of people directly compare the too and basically complain oh its not like the old system which is dumb, its meant to be different and also can be lots of fun

I think the reason why 1.9 is hated isn't because it is objectively a bad system that takes no skill, but it's because mojang completely removed the old combat which had a huge community surrounding it and replaced it with something that is completely different. If mojang made the combat toggleable or something like that, then I feel like a lot more people would try 1.9 out

9:00 on the subject of it not making sense with the sweeping attacks. it is extremely hard to do a sweeping attack while moving. it is extremely difficult to sweep a sword horizontally while moving from side to side, even at a low speed, as the acceleration of your body puts a lot of stress on your joints, making your sweep tend to stop in the middle of the attack. you can do one while dashing backwards with a short sword or broadsword, but doing one forward is surprisingly difficult. sweeping attacks are generally a lot easier to do in real life while standing still, and increase in difficulty and decrease in effectiveness. in short, because of the momentum and acceleration of your body and your sword, specifically because they are different, it is very hard to sweep a sword while running/dashing. you can do one while turning, but not at a high speed. also, putting more momentum behind the attack is effective if you are doing an overarm vertical swing or a thrust, and it is therefore easier to hit a single target than do a sweeping attack. (sorry for bad writing, english is a second language)

The video pointed out a lot of things I didn't realize would hurt pvp... PVP is never going to be the same because mojang doesn't realize the appeal of pvp. I think the largest minecraft server staying on 1.8 is a statement in itself.

I disagree that sword block hitting being removed is unnecessary, since with it, you cannot duel wield with a sword in main hand and a shield (which before 1.11 only blocks 66% of damage) gave a way of optional “sword blocking” Also momentum gives you knockback attacks which cancels sweeping attacks

Not gonna lie, i prefer 1.9 and above's combat system because it feels more like it is Strategical Like, blocking with a shield or attacking Trident, Sword or Axe Elytra for movement and dodging or Armor for protection Bows or Crossbows, since while Crossbows deal more damage and you can move while holding them, they take more time to charge than a bow. I also like the idea of attack cooldown, because it changes the fight a lot, instead of trying to attack as quickly as possible, you try to do as many crits as possible to compensate for having to wait to deal high damage, making it so you think a bit more when fighting. And Axes being strong makes total sense, think about it, swords are actually weaker than Axes are, but Swords are lighter, making them good for someone who has a low defense or no shield, while Axes are brutal weapons which can pierce shields(Because Shields are made out of wood so they get cut by the Axe) and are slower, making it a balance between high damage and high speed. Not only that but Arrows became great in 1.9 because it also gives more strategy and more options, like, should i use spectral arrows to see my opponent better or special arrows to damage over time or give them slowness, that all together makes 1.9 more of a "Strategy Combat" update. Edit : It is entirely subjective and you may prefer whatever you prefer, also, great video.

Well 1.9 pvp is just a different way of pvp. It isn't just the ax and shield camping but also comboing which is even a bit harder imo: u need to follow them with ur corsair,time ur attacks and strafe left and right.

Ok, so I am a 1.9+ pvper and i wanna tell u something out of my perspective... I think axes should do more damage because u use thesword and the axe completely differently (u slice with a sword and SMASH with an axe) I do not want wooden and stone axes to do this much damage tho (maybe all wooden tools should be nerfed in damage, stone too, but not that much) -Cooldown I would say, that it is a necessary step for a good combat system, because in 1.8 cps mattered too much and that's just not how a game should be because people with an autoclicker or reach hacks would destroy anyone who isn't like a pro pvper. The axe should have a longer cooldown than the sword cuz it's just heavier and u can't do the fluent moves with it so much (if u had ever chopped wood, u would know) -Material differences in damage Wood should do like up to 3 hearts maximum cuz it's just a stick generally (maybe axe 4 hearts cuz it's heavier) Gold is not easy to sharpen and gets dull soooo quickly (should do the same amount of damage Stone should do up to 4 hearts of damage because it's a pretty strong material and doesn't get dull (again axe is heavier, 5 hearts) Iron should do 6 hearts (axe 8 hearts, cuz it's just better than a diamond sword) Diamonds 7 hearts (axe should deal 9 hearts of damage) Different tools Axe (heavy, sharp) --> more damage, but longer cooldown Sword (rather light, sharp, cutting weapon, double sided) --> less damage, less coldown because of the swinging movement Pickace (not really sharp, heavy, not easy at all to use in real life combat) --> should have a long cooldown (doesn't have) but a bit more damage Hoe (used for cutting corn and stuff, pretty sharp, fast attack, but little weight) small damage, faster cooldown Shovel.......... U serious?????? U would want to use this for combat? Sweeping edge Swords again ARE USED TO CUT AND SLICE, SO THEY SHOULD DO SWEEPING DAMAGE, maybe still while running and stuff, but it's generally all a sword is used to in irl combat Anyways, u should try out crystal pvp, maybe this will make u love 1.9+ (if u find out how it works)

I like 1.9 combat because it isn't just r@ping your mouse until the other dies but you need to hit at the right moment also it has some tactical things like the axe does much damage in one hit and counters shields for a while but has a long cooldown the sword has high dps and an area of effect attack so if you need to onehit something or your enimie has a shield then the axe is your friend do you need to kill a army or something with high Hp then use the sword.

I'm not sure why they removed it, it's not in the way of anything, like the sword blocking will block 50% damage and the sheild blocks 100% damage They can both exist, so why was it removed?

if you want maximum damage to something like forcing players to run away, use an axe but if you wanna kill them, use a sword because even tho the axe have more damage, its speed suck and sword kill things faster (but its only netherite and diamond sword. iron, stone and wooden sword is worse than axe)

@@owenleonard3153 Well, for me, Im kinda vibing with his statement. 1.9 combat is a pretty good system for PvE, but just not the best for PvP. Kinda overcomplicated imo. 1.7-1.8, is boring as a pve system, but pretty good as a pvp system. And yes, ive done PvE on 1.9+ versions, and I have done PvE on 1.8 version, so I think ik what saying.

Another thing they experimented with was that drinkable potions stack to 16 which I think might be overpowered but with the interrupted eating might balance it out.

really they should make combat system be switchable. if you want old or new be optional when i play old combat i always lose but new it's 50/50 i listened to my finger my finger say no to old combat :/ but when pve it's a lot harder that's why i also hate and love both combat

I think it's just because newer players were acquainted with the new combat mechanics. But still, even though I don't have the perfect statistics, I believe that 1.8 PvP still dominates because of the popularity of 1.8 PvP gamemodes such as skywars and bedwars and 1.8 has been the most preferred version of most PvP players.

I liked the the new combat, but not only was realeased with broken items that are still prety opnspecialy to npc's, but also the fact that you cant switch combat types with a game rule madenit fruatating and unesesery dividing and is still the worst decision that Mojang ever made.

The reach of weapons can actually be changed with commands, so I don't honestly think the reach thing will be a huge deal on servers at least. Then again, the attack cooldown can also be removed with commands and nobody noticed or used it, so I don't know how much that'll solve.

imo from a 1.9 players perspective the only really bad parts of combat are the fact that shields are really laggy above 50 ping and buckets are broken, but other than that certain gamemodes like UHC are way better in 1.9 because of crossbows cobwebs swimming and tridents, and shield disables make swords way more useful than axes in most fights, though hotbar swapping the two is difficult its much more effective than just using an axe. also the new combat stuff is just gonna divide the community more and create a 3rd preffered combat type and complicate the PVP community more, and i think it would be better if mojang either reverted the disliked changes completely or didnt change them at all, either would be better than updating to a system that seems to be becoming more and more complex and confusing than even 1.9 with the reach changing and stuff. Also certain servers and gamemodes don't include axes or nerf them, just like how on servers like hypixel certain features are adjusted for QOL. Lastly pls dont play on cubecraft as its one of the worst and laggiest 1.9 servers, try playing on servers like minecraft ultimate, vultex, mineclub, apollouhc, or pvplegacy which are all way more fun and less laggy. tldr: 1.9 combat is good sometimes if u actually try to get good at it and not just dislike it because other ppl do and u havent tried it, also new combat snapshots = too complicated

@Gris'erSaysHi @Jacob De Guzman they are fixing it so in 1.18 you would have spam click back, snowballs op, and basically combat update part 2, Best part is that you got 4 blocks reach with a sword and swords are a lot stronger, you can stack potions, if someone is attacking you, holding shields actually makes you have damage and knockback but weaker like block hit, basically Jeb is still working on it so be patient, it will be good and he has took his time to add a combat system adding both 1.8 and 1.9 together, Combos are a lot easier and CPS limit is 7 so it is fair for other players, you get combos by strafing This latest update is called snapshot 8c and It will come out, just fixing combat. And Yes I said this twice but you can spam click with no cooldown

Honestly I can’t see any good player switching to a new system that no one knows anything about over 1.8.9, these changes are cool for single player or even multiplayer survival but no where else. Also if they want any server to acutally update to this they need to make sure that servers like hypixel can handle it without crashing and burning due to how poorly optimized it is and the renaming of EVERY SINGLE ITEM FOR NO REASON. Not to mention what the mod devs would have to do

Unlike most people, I really like the 1.9 updates. In 1.8 you just spammed the sword and fishing rod, but the 1.9 update has a lot more skill and thinking involved. Although the update at first was pretty bad, they had improved it quite a lot over the coming updates.

What I think about this issue is that it should’ve been a toggle settings for servers and stuff like that because I really like the combat of 1.9 in a single player against regular mobs I feel like it’s more difficult and I like the challenge. But they are something more customizable for people that likes PVP or people who like the new system.

I also consider that the combat tests is a combination of 1.8 and 1.9 PVP. And I also think that the 1.8 PVP-ers will play the combat tests once they are officially released, just because the spam clicking will come back. And for those who really like spamming, the hoe will be the best item, because a diamond hoe deals 2 hearts of damage and when attacking with a hoe, the invulnerability period will be shorter than attacking with a sword or a trident.

The main problem is still server performance, not combat. However I also still think that the solution is not a terrible attempt at merging the two systems, but a simple toggle command. The reasoning for this is quite simple - firstly there is personal preference, cater to both parties, secondly some modes objectively work better in certain versions. Bedwars is made with 1.8 mechanics made in mind, whereas late game survival PvP with end crystals and totems is good with 1.9. Why Mojang thinks middle ground is the way is beyond me, just lay the two options out on the table for the players to choose instead of causing a 3-way split?! I personally love both systems, they have their strengths and weaknesses but both function great if used in certain environments. Good video though.

Making it toggleable could cause some problems. For example, Mojang would have to update both versions of combat. I feel like a better alternative is to add a weapon that functions like a 1.8 sword or something (also let rods do kb)

Real answer: People didnt want to change and we’re so used to the old version that they didn’t want to have to learn to get good, 1.9 fixed some of the worst aspects of 1.8 ie. click speed being a factor and the lack of strategic thought, the new update adds strategy on a higher scale and even though it’s more complicated anyone can become good at it regardless of natural abilities such as click speed or ability to to aim perfectly, of course while 1.9 fixed the combat system to avoid exploitation and other problems people refused to learn a new system and therefore if they were good at 1.8 they refused 1.9 while people will do the opposite in a reversed situation, both are viable pvp methods and though personally I believe 1.9 was much better as it was meant for pvp when 1.8 was meant for pve (players vs entities) the version you play does not mean anything about you other than what you’re more comfortable with

Im gonna have to disagree heavily on the part about 1.8 being for PVE, I think the majority agrees that 1.9 is only good for PVE and 1.8 is for PvP. I dont understand why everyone says 1.8 has no strategy, if were talking about a 1v1 sword on flat land, then yes 1.9 has more strategy but that usually is never the case. Removing click speed and aim lowers the skill gap by alot, almost anyone can be good at 1.9 pvp. I doubt the reason is because 1.8 players didnt want to learn a new version, Its been 5 years and still no veterans play 1.9

Mojang had good intentions but it's a shame they completely alienated a lot of the community by it. Personally I don't really ever pvp as it was never why I started in the first place (survival/building in general) so I felt like 1.9 was just another good update especially due to the elytra. Ngl tho some of the suggested changes seem very biased towards people who do 1.8 pvp like removing quick saturation healing which is super convenient but I get why people wouldn't like it. I just hope one day servers don't have to be forced to stay in the past and everyone can actually enjoy updates

The main things that need to be fixed / changed in the combat snapshots are: Removing the autoclicker Removing the reach modifications and keeping it at 3 blocks Removing the eating interruption Sword blocking added back If those 3 things are changed then servers can replicate the old combat pretty well while keeping a lot of the new features. I've tried it with the current 1.9 combat and it actually worked better than I expected.

with those changes it would become just a worser version of 1.8, swords would be the meta weapon. The charged attacks and differences in reach keep each melee weapon balanced and gives a lot more playstyles that can be done with multiple weapons. Swordblocking would just be annyoing and ruin the balance between the weapons.I suggest that you tty to play the combat tests with some friends for a bit longer

I like how 1.8 Stan’s like to complain a stone axe is better than a diamond sword while you have to wait double the amount of time to attack pretty much making diamond swords do almost double dps and I think most 1.8 supporters don’t like 1.9 because they never tried it and 1.8 uses less ram and because when 1.9 came out people were already good at 1.8 and didn’t want to learn a new pvp

I am a person who has played both versions and I still enjoy 1.8/1.7 pvp better. I have hit leaderboards on popular practice servers(lunar and Minemen Club) for nodebuff and soup in the past, and I can say that 1.9+ pvp is just to slow passed. In my opinion COMPARING THE ITEMS NATIVE TO BOTH VERSIONS 1.8/1.7 takes a lot more skill. Minecraft was never a game made for combat, people just liked hitting each other and server owners made profit off of given them a place to do that. 1.8/1.7 PvP was not self explanatory and there were "metas" like wtaping, staping, and distancing that people did not know/share for a long time so it drove many new players away when they tried to join the fun. I feel like the 1.9 update was meant for PvE rather than PVP. I hate to see it when people compare crystal pvp to 1.8/1.7 and say it is better/takes more skill when you are completely unable to do it without shields so it is not a fair comparison. (edit: they could just implement 1.8 pvp again but keep sweeping edge for the PvE players =/)

axes are really only good early game. Late game when you have netherite the sword is a much more viable weapon. Even a diamond sword with good enchants is better than a fully enchanted axe. Late game the axe is only used for trees and disabling shield. But really nothing else. So the sword is still the best weapon in the game overall.

Honestly, i really dislike "the combat tests" its okay for the pvp comunity to be split. 1.9 combat is defenetly better for normal minecraft than 1.8 and 1.8 is better for games like skywars and UHC. The combat tests would really destroy 1.9 pvpers and removing the regen you get from food would destroy survival. I think that i should stay like it is and have the comunity split.

Protection did not receive any nerfs in 1.9. Armor did, but in a way that you should really have actually clarified the change. (Armor is less effective the more damage you take. This is not the same as saying "protection was nerfed" right after saying "Sharpness was nerfed" implying it was a flat numerical nerf and not a gameplay mechanic change to armor itself) Look I get it 1.9 was bad and everyone hates it but if you're gonna make a video on it, don't fill it with misinformation. These changes were made with the vanilla survival game in mind and with respect to that they're actually good for the vanilla survival game. If there's one point of criticism that is legitimately fair for 1.9, its that Mojang didn't listen to PvP players, but at the same time I understand why they did not. PvP players are by the metrics a large group, but still a minority of Minecraft players. An update that only caters to them would likely not have improved the base vanilla experience which is what players typically want. Mojang... kinda doesn't care about stepping on the toes on an individual small group of players, and they've done it increasingly more since to a variety of people (mapmakers get it a lot, no matter how many new features we get for mapmaking, game performance continually decreases and bugs are fixed that break tons of existing systems, or bugs are introduced that dont get fixed for years but have fixes sitting on the MC bug report page from talented people who have seen the game's inner code.) The changes are good, they just weren't made with PvP players in mind, which the community threw a fit about. Also, as an archer myself, bows take usually around 30-50 pounds of strength to pull back and hold consistently, especially if it is a Recurve Bow (like the ones in minecraft, not Composite, aka with gears). From the point of realism, this mechanic makes complete sense. From the point of gameplay, it makes the most sense when compared to the Crossbow. Bows get a little weaker if you hold them too long, meaning you need to fire your ranged attack or cancel it. Crossbows can be scrolled over and fired. Its an attempt to bring the 2 weapons closer in line without needing to buff the Crossbow.

to be completely honest, I think you need to understand this combat snapshot, and thus the newly redacted combat ideas are aimed towards not only java, but for bedrock as well, obviously in terms of combat there should be some sort of skill involved, but this progress is meant to be something even someone on mobile could work with, rather than spend their live trying to figure out how to kill a creeper faster when they're spam clicking like they do in 1.9+
