something important to remember about colleges spending seemingly insane amounts on sports is that sports (specifically football) generate insane amounts of money for the school, which is then spent on academic improvements.
@TurtleShroom317 күн бұрын
> A lot of that money could instead be spent on academic improvements Actually, it's the exact opposite. For _small_ schools, the money brought in by sports is what pays for everything else. In addition, the big ticket sports (American football, baseball, soccer, etc.) provide the revenue to fund other sports (golf, volleyball, etc.) at a loss! It's EXTREMELY beneficial to the college.

@radishinglad99816 күн бұрын
@@epicbirdy42069pretty much that. Historically there were even fewer teams in the south. It's changed a lot in the past 40-30 years, but that's still decades of tradition of caring about college football or basketball over professional. That's why the SEC in particular is full of colleges that put massive amounts of money into their sports - all those colleges would be the closest places people there could get to professional football. Now as college sports becomes a bigger deal nationally you see some unusual places get really good at college sports. You get people buying tickets to get into the stadium and watch their favorite teams play, and even the people at home make them lots of money through ad revenue. They're making money off of people who aren't even enrolled in their college. In a sense, they make back a lot of the money they spend for these sporting events. To put it into perspective for you, a big football school like Texas, Alabama or Ole Miss will make anywhere from $150-$200 million dollars a year on their football programs alone, so it might seem like that money could go straight to a library or something, but generally a LOT of money does go to academic stuff and they use the rest to make sure their multi million dollar asset keeps producing
