The end as a biome is called sky because notch was originaly gonna make the end the sky dimention (however that is spelled) but he decided to do i guess last minute changes, but he forgot to call it "the end" when you look at what biome it is when you press F3. so theres that. =P

The sky dimension is supposed to be a very rare thing players sleeping in a bed will have a 0.2% percent to go the sky biome when you die in the Sky dimension the player will wake up and continue to play in the overworld

Rewatching these and I'd like to point out: the reason the biome in the End is called Sky is because they were originally going to add a Skylands dimension as a sort of heaven to the nether as hell. For whatever reason, they changed their minds and rather than a bunch of beautiful islands in the sky, we got an ominous island in the void.
