unfortunately, as games add more and more content, eventually already existing content becomes less valuable to gameplay. this is not a good thing, so what do you think should be done about it? let's consider the topic! comment what you think below!

I've heard modern Minecraft called "as wide as an ocean, but as deep as a puddle" They add new features, but they refuse to give older ones new uses. They focus on implementing new items for the sake of adding more content, even if it isn't good content. Stuff like dog armour could just as readily be made with metal or leather. They just needed to give armadillos a purpose. The brush uses copper. Any metal could be used instead. They just needed to give copper a use, same with the spyglass. They add more and more one-use items to draw players back in because "new item!!"
@EmeraldCrowz
@EmeraldCrowz 3 ай бұрын
I can forgive the armadillo, as the wolf armor was buffed enough to make it valuable. It adds value to finding these mobs in generally unexplored terrain like savannahs and mesas. But the copper and amethyst examples are very egregious. Copper should have uses that matter. If copper was useful, people wouldn't mind that it's used in the brush exclusively anyways because they would have gathered plenty. The clocks an age old example of this. Gold being used for it is arbitrary, it was to give gold more purpose. But gold is fairly useful nowadays. Copper just doesn't have that same factor outside of decoration and a few cheap uses.
@pourplecat
@pourplecat 3 ай бұрын
Armadillos could have been added, if they had more than one use. If they made dog armor craftable with leather and iron, it would be lame and uninteresting obtaining it as people already have an abundance of those two resources. If armadillos/armadillo scutes were given more useful uses, it would be a good feature. Same reason why I love the addition of bees, they have so many small but occasionally very useful applications that makes the bees great. It sucks how little mojang cares about quality updates, and instead only releases these low effort updates to attract more players to the game. Not because they want to make the game better.

It’s much more complicated than that. Every single interaction you have with mobs shouldn’t be killing them. @@BigMastah79there are ways to do that. You could make it where there’s manure when you breed cattle that then acts as a lesser version of bone meal. It’s an early game bone meal alternative and gives new purpose for animal breeding. Another example would sheering feathers off of chickens, chickens and ducks naturally shed their feathers over time. You could make colored feathers from parrots. For a cool cosmetic item or even better a functional item. Another cool thing would be shaving polar bear hair for their hair. Then craft it into its own kind of armor that could also be combined with iron to make it reinforced. Add snails so you can then cook them. Add new food items to feed specific animals. Adding complex mechanics will make the game more long lasting. I can just breed sheep and cattle with wheat which I can make a farm for, use the seeds for breeding chickens, craft hay bales for llamas. That’s breeding 4 animals with just one plant. Adding more uses to animals will give us more incentive to not kill them. But most players kill cows anyways so why not give more crafting recipes to leather. They aren’t scared of innovative animals, they are scared how a specific small niche group of activists will react to their updates

Minecraft was originally inspired by Dwarf Fortress, and I feel Mojang should take a leaf from that game's update strategies. Specifically, they need a clear vision to work towards. Dwarf Fortress's objective is to create a fully-simulated world, and so every update builds off what's already there and is guided by clear purpose. Minecraft needs something similar. Do they want to make a world that feels truly endless? Do they want to create a massive Terraria-style player progression path? Do they want to create a game with so many optional objectives, the player can make their own fun? Right now, they bounce from objective to objective without settling, and it's creating this problem of interesting ideas that never go anywhere.

I mean, in game, chainmail is worse than iron armor protection wise, and chains require an iron ingot and two iron nuggets to make, meaning to make a chestplate youd need 8 iron ingots and 16 iron nuggets, which is more expensive than the iron armor, for something thats objectively worse. I will say, not everything has to be for stats, it does have some cosmetic value, and its unique interactions with armor trims can make it some of the most visually interesting armor in the game, up there with dyed leather armor, but if youre willing to get rare armor trims and put them on chainmail for the sake of pure stylishness, having to explore to find the chainmail makes it all the more stylish since you know someone had to go looking for it to find it. If there was a crafting recipe, wearing it would seem less like a fahsion statement, and more like youre being wasteful of your iron lol. I personally feel like chainmail *should* be better than iron armor, at the very least for certain types of damage, since its uncraftable. If it was better than iron armor, then it would make chainmail another step in the games armor progression, instead of a junk item. The player would finally make iron armor, and feel confident enough to go into the deeper caves to start looking for diamonds and structures, along the way slowly finding chainmail in chests to replace their iron gear, help them go further. Leather armor has unique uses and interactions, gold armor has unique uses and interactions, both are *otherwise* worse options than iron, so maybe if chainmail gets a recipe it should have a specific niche use, that makes it suited for a specific playstyle, like how leather is intended to be someones armor of choice for mountain living, and gold is intended to be someones armor of choice for nether living. Maybe chainmail is best for cave living somehow, idk. Just brainstormin ideas

We had glowstone dust for a really long time that could do anything they could. why not make "Glow Paste" Made from glowstone dust and slime balls OR just let us put ink sacs and glowstone dust in a crafting grid to make the current glow ink sac? That way we have an alternative way for people who either put a base in/near a swamp or for those who do redstone could get it that way without having to needlessly make a new farm or to sit for hours killing so you have enough for the foreseeable future. No backpackception or shulker stacking, just a simple item that is super easy to get that enables early adventure while getting resources for your final base spot that you are travelling to! I am playing a steampunk modpack with upgradable backpacks, and its super awesome to go on a 4 hour journey in 1 direction, clearing out all the dungeons and structures, ores, etc. To come back to base with a massive haul and sort it. Boats are great for early game travel and elytras are endgame for most of the players. In my opinion the only way of transportation that needs buffing is by horses as they are to big for comfortable travel in the forest, they can't traverse water quickly, saddle cannot be crafted and they are simply to slow for the effort

To me the funniest part about all of this is when they addressed the people saying that all 3 mobs should be added, they basically said: oh, it's so hard, they need to have a use, they need to fit the ecosystem, we need to make sure they offer something unique and interesting. That's funny to me because the things they add don't really do any of that. They have a useless use. They're so small they don't make a difference in the ecosystem of the game. They don't offer anything interesting to the game. And finally, they're not hard to put in the game. i feel like the last few updates should have taken just 1 year to make all of them, the community adds every ideia they have before them, and although they need to have the ideia from the ground, it really doesn't take that much time, i saw mods improving the game in so many ways mojang should, and none of them took years of development. Idk, maybe there's something wrong with mojang, maybe there's someone forcing them to do these minimal effort updates, someone like Microsoft.

Mojang feels like they dont have a goal in mind with new updates and just "adds it because its cool" I understand minecraft is a game and not a story, but Brandon Sanderson: "go deeper before you go wide" Not to mention they could just rebalance old features to fit better in new progression. Gold tools could be buffed. We got golden armour "buff" in form of piglin trade. And we could have more. I personally would for example make polar bears much more dangerous (they are after all biggest land predator on earth) But in doing so they could also be made territorial, attacking both players and monster. Having polar bears like that could give them use in grinders or just as local area denial. This feature requires no new items, drops or mechanics. Everything is already in game. Just make them stronger, and make them hunt Everything thats alive. And thats just a single idea

This is why I really don't like the mob votes. Not only is it responsible for many bloat features, but it also has the player base WANTING these bloat features in the form of "just add all 3". Imagine if the Great Hunger won the original mob vote, and instead of using a grind stone to disenchant items, you had to run all the way to where this one mob spawns and pray it doesn't eat your item. As for a solution for the bloat problem, there just needs to be a culling of these features. There is never going to be a world where having two unique scutes, needing to use glow ink sacs instead of glow stone to light up signs, or needing a rabbit hide to make a bundle would make any sense. (it would also go hand in hand with a rebalancing update, which the game desperately needs) It would most definitely be an unpopular update, but a necessary one for the health of the game.

what I also don't like about the new item bloat and something that it seems like mojang would _want_ to have an interest for, is that it makes crafting recipes so much more confusing for beginners! At least now they've added the recipe book but it still is just good game design to make recipes intuitive, and the new items and crafting recipes are so desperate for their one trick pony item that it really hurts the crafting. Most of the older items are pretty intuitive enough that you could mess around for a second and take some guesses and probably get it or at least know the materials to get, where the modern recipes are downright silly with niche items you'd never think to use. Who on earth decided that a helmet that helps you breathe underwater was NOT going to be a scuba/diving helmet or anything, but would instead be made of turtle scales (???) that you do not obtain by killing or brushing turtles, but instead by breeding them and protecting their eggs for several real life days and waiting for the baby turtles to grow up. I do really wish they would take a step back and do some refactoring for the systems that already exist, instead of this focus on what new things they can add. I do think, however, some of the new things are big steps in the right direction and feel very positive about them (trial chambers and the new omen effects are very good). If just a little work went into better tying all the systems together, I think it would go a long way! I’ve 100% noticed this in recent years. There is a lot of potential for improvement but they simply aren’t doing that. The worst offenders are the armor trims. People like them, sure, but the problem is they are actually locked to only being an armor trim. There could never be another use for them because that simply is not what they are for. They take up inventory space as they can’t stack, and you usually won’t need more than a few. A better idea might be to make armor trims function similar to how banner patterns are made. Maybe with a new workbench that required specific, already existing items, in order to put a new look on your armor. Mojang also just needs to make everything more interconnected

I actually don’t think armor trims are an offender here in the way that was mentioned. They give smithing tables a third use (netherite and villager profession being the others that I can think of) and the fact that they don’t have another use other than cosmetics is in line with what music discs have always been, so complaining about how hard they are to get is a non-factor unless you also think music discs are a bad addition to the game. Furthermore, the fact that they can’t stack is just untrue. I don’t know if historically they couldn’t, but now they can stack to 64. Even if they couldn’t stack, the fact that you do only need a few of them offsets the problem of inventory clutter; unless you are a collector, you never are incentivized to carry more than four ever, so your inventory shouldn’t fill with them The solution proposed of adding a new workbench just adds to the problem in my opinion. We already have anvils, fletching tables, looms, smithing tables, and others. I severely doubt that the problem at hand is a lack of workbench alternatives. In fact, armor trims make full use of the functionality of the smithing table, allowing for three slots to be used where the anvil would fail at its maximum of two, showcasing a nice level of interconnectivity instead of adding “armor trim station”
@Ajryen
@Ajryen 2 ай бұрын
@@ryotoiii7945 you’re right that we don’t need another workbench and that they give smithing tables another use. A better way to word my idea would be to overhaul the system to work somehow similar to banner patterns, so the actual item of armor trims won’t need to exist any more, reducing clutter even slightly. Also, when it comes to music discs, they are somewhat “exempt” because at first it was just a few items that took up a whole slot. But armor trims basically doubled the number of items in the game that took up whole slots while not being very common and not adding that much value. It’s the equivalent to having 3 wheat seeds in your inventory when you are starting to fill up. Music discs were more understandable because of their rarity and perceived value. Things stop being valuable when everything starts to act like 3 wheat seeds in your inventory, (armor trims-> one trick ponies).

They give old features uses all the time. Amethyst, Copper, and Tuff have all been revisited with new features and items. In 1.16 Glowstone received new functionality with Respawn Anchors. You can also look at how items are given more functionality in less indirect ways. Trial Chambers provide areas to use your equipment in the midgame. The Deep Dark makes Hoes a useful tool for harvesting experience. Wool is a vital part of city exploration. Features may be unrelated, but they can synthesize together to accomplish new things. Sculk Sensors and Amethyst Resonance can combine with various other redstone components in order to create new types of machinery, Lush Cave plants can be used in tandem with other plants to create new scenery and landscaping. Look at the synergy that blocks enable in addition to their raw, basic usage. And let’s be real, what’s Apple Pie doing for the game? If Mojang added it you’d just call it useless.

I would go further and say that copper should replace the iron in the rail recipe entirely. Although the minecarts are a whole different story, I would have copper make like 6 rails and if you use iron you would get 32. That's what I would do, many options with the same effect.

I agree with this. My main issue with the mob votes, unlike most people, is that the mobs have one sole purpose and are added for the sake of it. For example, sniffers' only purpose is to sniff flowers. The torchflower was a perfect opportunity to be used as the recipe for spectral arrows, instead of expanding on already existing features, all we got was two flowers. Glow squids could have been expanded too, but their only purpose is is to make glowing text on signs and glowing item frames. Why not just add a recipe that mixes ink with glowstone dust? The problem I see with the mobs is that they are too one-dimensional and have no link to the already existing game, while also being a tad bit inconvenient and filled with missed oportunities. They are just kind of there because Mojang has to add a new mob, not because they are a solution to a problem, neither because they add features that the player would repeatedly. Once the player finds an armadillo, he'll just brush it until he has a sufficient amount of scutes to last him a long time, and then the mob is forgotten.

This is spot on. The only thing that has multiple uses (probably a hundred different uses) is the crafter that auto crafts. And the bundles were going to add a new way to play and have storage management. The polar bear? What use? Nothing. Literally nothing. What about llamas? Practically nothing. What about foxes? Automatic sweet berry farm maybe? Other than that nothing. Glow squid? Again no use. Animals/mobs only get added if they are cute or seem cool and expansive. (They usually aren’t cool or expansive). You have mojang literally making new games that have more in depth mobs than base game minecraft. What I think should happen is they should narrow their focus with what they add/change and broaden the effects it may have. I always thought it would be cool if you could add glow ink to your armor to make it glow and sparkle and give off a light level of atleast 6-7. Or make polar bears be a mount that is slower but can attack and swim with you on its back. And add snow armor when you kill polar bears. There’s so much they could expand with. Or make a trap update that makes tons of traps in the games. It would improve efficiency with mob farms and animal farms. Or add animal auto breeders (feed troughs).

I dont like the amount of features that require knowledge from outside the game to be aware of. How is someone expected to figure out that a brush made from copper and feathers is supposed to be used on a seemingly worthless savannah mob to get an item whose only purpose is to make armor for the only tamable combat mob that is from a completely unrelated and distant biome? How are you supposed to figure out that these loud flying night time mobs only exist because you havent slept in a couple days and that the item they drop is used for repairing the game's final piece of equipment? How is someone supposed to find out that the final boss can be respawned by crafting and placing 4 crystals in a specific pattern? How is someone supposed to figure out how to brew potions at all? I just wish there were more subtle indications of features like the painting showing how to build the wither, something like a villager house with a brush in an item frame and both a single suspicious sand and glazed terracotta for example

Thank you for taking the time to make this video, I enjoyed hearing your views. Well worded too! The exploration stuff resonates with me, whenever I clear out my inventory and am ready to go explore a new cave, my inventory is full of items that I either have to stop and remove from my inventory (string, spider eyes, bones, stone variants like diorite, rotten flesh, leather, 2 random mutton and 3 colors of wool. It gives me the feeling that I have to stop and do chores instead of spending time doing what I wanted to do in the first place - explore. This issue is massively compounded if I happen to find a structure or a lot of treasure ore (Redstone, Nether Quartz, Iron/Gold/Copper Ore each taking up one or more inventory slots) that I also want to bring home with me. I end up having to carry several shulker boxes with me and/or an ender chest and then doing the tedious task of condensing my inventory instead of exploring T.T I think Mojang has developed themselves into a box (or perhaps a block in this case) where there are solutions that make a lot of sense but they can't implement them now because it would disrupt the game balance they have worked towards; Solutions like being able to use a stone cutter or perhaps a new crafting block to convert stone and variants between each other - in the current state of the game this would turn stone generators into a grocery store of building blocks which I think in Mojang's eyes is a bad thing. But then this could allow for a single inventory slot to be 'stone' in a condensing-style of inventory like you described or like the bundle was trying to achieve.

Bees. They're an interesting mob that add a lot of ambience to the world as you walk around, bringing life to forests and flowery areas. You see them flying around, sometimes you see them flying to flowers and getting covered in pollen and taking that pollen back to a hive, like bees do. That's neat! You want to take some home with you, but you need to get their hive. You can pick it up with the bees inside of it with silk touch, which helps you transport them! But they get angry if you break their hive without putting them to sleep first. So you put a campfire under it, a block that sees a sparse amount of use, and this gives it some more functionality. Now you've got bees wherever you want, and also an interesting decoration block. But they do more than just look nice. If you let them get pollen from flowers, they bring it back to their hive and it fills up with honey, and if you put them to sleep first, you can harvest that honey with a bottle. New food item, and one with a unique, if minor effect. Neat! And even beyond that, you can turn honey bottles directly into sugar as an alternative way to get that resource. Pretty cool. But wait, you can also craft it into honey blocks, a block with its own sticky properties with players, one that looks good, and one that has a LOT of functionality with redstone due to how it sticks to other blocks, but not slime blocks. A fantastic block all around, plus it has niche uses with with the fact that entities can sink into it. Awesome! But wait, you could also instead use shears on the beehive and get honeycombs instead. You can craft those into honeycomb blocks, which are just decorative, but have an interesting and unique texture to them. But beyond that, you can make them into beehives, separate from the naturally spawning bee nests, with their own texture, but the same functionality. Easier to breed more bees and give them homes that way, than trying to get more hives naturally or from growing specific trees near flowers, but neat that you can still do that to get the hives if you want! But there's more! You can use them to make candles, an interesting light source that you can light and snuff out, stack up to four in one space for different amounts of light and aesthetic effects, you can color them, you can put them on cakes, a really great and unique tool for building. And then there's copper. Copper is a very unique and cool building block because of all of the different weathering states it can be in, creating different aesthetics, different colors, different patterns, all kinds of things you can do with copper, but it would be a shame if it always weathered over time and you had to keep shaving it with an axe. Thankfully, you can use honeycomb to stop it from changing to a different type of copper naturally, and always stay the same. That's so cool and useful! And that's STILL not it. Bees that have pollen on them can pollinate crops that they fly over, automatically acting as bonemeal on them. You can design farms around using this to speed up growth rates, which is so cool! That's like 11 different things that bees can do, depending on how you count it, all in one mob, all without having to kill them (which Mojang seems really reluctant to encourage nowadays in their game heavily about killing things), all interacting with tons of different systems in the game, branching out like a web. What an amazing new addition to minecraft! ... Armadillos. When you use a brush on them, they drop scute. This adds a new use for the underused copper brush, and this new resource can be used to make wolf armor, something that people have wanted for a long time. They add some life to biomes that aren't very lively, and have a few cute interactions. That's about it. Camels. They add some life to a mostly dead biome, two people can ride them at once, and they can do a silly long jump rather than the horse's high jump. I think that's all. Frogs. They add some life to a pretty dead biome, they add an admittedly unique way to farm slimes and magma cubes if you design it well, they have unique breeding mechanics with frogspawn and tadpoles, and they offer 3 unique colored light blocks based on the type of frog you use to kill a magma cube, and the player has to work a bit for all the colors. Admittedly not too bad, i like frogs a fair amount, but still less. Goats. They can do something funny by knocking you off of a mountain or screaming, and you can take their horns to make some unique and silly sounds when they ram into blocks. But not when you kill them. You can also milk them, but it's the same as milking a cow, and cows are much more common and easily accessible. Technically another way to get milk, though. Axolotls. They attack drowned and guardians, and they can give you regeneration and remove mining fatigue when they do so, but you can't actually tame them, just carry them around in buckets. Glow Squids. They drop glow ink sacs, which can be used to make glowing item frames and make sign text more visible. They don't even glow. ... It just kinda feels like they add new mobs for two reasons - there's a biome they're making or updating that doesn't have an animal in it so it gets one, and just generally for the sake of adding a new passive mob every update. The functionality is an afterthought, and sometimes the mobs are shoehorned into a feature that was already planned just for the sake of giving the mob a reason to exist. It's not about adding more fun to the game, it's about the game needing more animals for the sake of having more animals in places. Minecraft is an aesthetic, not a game, and we're not playing it the way they want us to, so they keep trying to push people into walking around looking at the pretty stuff they made instead, and then they add more pretty, meaningless stuff to look at. I know bees didn't have all of that functionality when they were first added, but they had a lot, and the fact that they keep going back to add more just makes the addition of bees more and more worthwhile the longer they've been in the game. I doubt we'll be seeing goats get more and more functionality the longer the game is out. I doubt we'll ever see anything useful from glow squids. They exist to be looked at when you open minecraft again and build a base in the new biome they made, and then you stop playing once you finish building that house because the further into the game you get, the less fun it becomes, and every update makes the late/end game more frustrating. It's an exploration and nostalgic game. Go to the new area if you want the new stuff. See how pretty it is. We put work into this dungeon so it's the only place you can find the new enchantment, nobody uses enchantment tables anyways and we hate that you use villagers, so you can only get it from chests. We put work into making mountains prettier so now there's goats there. We added a passive mob to lush caves and it technically does something so it's not just ambient and pretty. But the new update is out, stop thinking about old stuff, play the game again, build a new base in our new biome, stop thinking about long-term, people only play the game for 5 hours and move on anyways. I dunno. Every update since 1.16 has felt less like an actual attempt to freshen up and improve the game, and more of an attempt to desperately get people to keep playing after the massive spike in players it got during 1.16. Don't leave yet, you can play a little longer to see the new biome. We didn't have time to add the new biome but the wandering trader sells the pretty blocks we made. Don't leave, come back, there's a new cute silly frog to look at. Surface level features that fall flat as soon as you try to interact with them beyond the surface level. Glow squids are boring and useless. There's no reason to bother with axolotl. Goats don't do anything unique beyond a few aesthetics. Redstoners don't care about camels, builders don't care about camels, farmers don't care about camels, and explorers have better options than camels. They're just... here to look neat when you walk through a desert sometimes. Anyways, that's my dissertation, hope I got an A, I'm absolutely a professional game designer who's been doing this job for years and knows better than the company that owns and makes the most popular game of all time, you can trust me bro, my uncle works at nintendo.

I've never seen anyone talking about that, but I find it very funny that they thought about biome-dependent spawn of the salmon, cod, puffer and tropical fish mobs, but fishing mechanic has just two loot tables: one for jungle biomes with bamboo and one for all the other. First of all I think that adding two edible fishes was pointless, but okay... Adding more loot tables would improve exploration just as they so desire. We should be able to catch salmon only in rivers and cod in cold oceans, tropical and puffer fishes - only in warm ones. Also they could've decrease the chances for treasure items and increase it only in the deep oceans which AFAIK never generate near the shores making players to either build fishing sites there or fish from the boat.

Farming pigs and rabbits for meat is pointless when you have cows which also give you leather. I thought about "balancing" that by increasing the maturity time for cows to 40 min (from 20 now) and make it so that you can milk them only while at least one calf is nearby (we already have the similar code for adult polar bears changing their behavior when a baby is near). Also make them eat short grass and grass blocks like sheep do speeding up the growth. That should make awful "cow crushers" way less effective than traditional farming (though people would just change the farm design with grass spreading). Pigs should have current 20 min maturity timer, but give 1-3 piglets, making pork easier source for food. Rabbits should have 10 min maturity timer and be able to breed every 5 min instead of 10 like every animal and maybe also give 1-3 baby rabbits. This, of course, would require some balancing with trading.
@vasilyd8578
@vasilyd8578 3 ай бұрын
I also thought about the "overkill" mechanic when you kill a mob in one hit (which probably can be coded like: mob health = full, received damage >= health which gives the "overkill"). "Overkill" would increase the EXP and mob drops, which should be combined with the overall slight decrease for mob drops (more for animals), which should further encourage humane slaughtering for animals. Again, some aspects like trading and Looting enchantment should be balanced a bit.

Love the video, I just started playing again recently on bedrock with friends on a realm, my biggest complaint is first that porting to mobile means that the mob limit has to be within like 2 chunks so on PC you can watch mobs despawn and theres always so many of them. Then the problem i see is the complete lack of direction for the game- i played java 1.6.4 to 1.8 as a kid and at that point the game was pretty much didnt need much changed, if i wanted more indepth gameplay i'd get mods which provided super detailed progression that vanilla isnt meant to provide. minecraft isn't really meant to be a boss fighting game, an exploring game, a survival game or a building game it supposed to be all of those if the player wants and mojang adding meaningless things really doesn't make any of those better,, like the deep snow bullshit is so utterly pointless when they could add more biomes or a rare boss or even another dimension, id like to see a big change,, I love the rare geological structure idea

Strangest thing about new-Minecraft's lack of cohesion is that it's unironically worse than many kitchen sink modpacks. Probably because a lot of mod devs already use vanilla items to ensure better compatibility and not needing to bother with new sprites. Leather is a huge example of this; something shared across many mobs and crafts in many mods while, like you pointed out, it's basically a dead material in vanilla because Mojang seems to want to torture themselves for worse results, with every single new item they make. Mods also improve the "food is pointless" bit. That one mod I forget the name of that Gregtech uses gives you stacking max health for variety. And Lycanites (which I genuinely despise the design of in other ways) offers challenging mobs to hunt or breed in exchange for strong buffs, sometimes even stronger than potions can reach - meat that exists to solely be cooked and eaten is one of the few times it makes sense to have one-purpose materials, but Mojang seems to hate the idea of adding more meat-based food items. Even then - again borrowing from several mods, imagine a garden salad or some other complete meal letting you cram five food types into a luxury item with less efficiency but much better combat healing than the individual parts. The only thing close to this is rabbit stew, which doesn't stack, and even if it did it wouldn't be better than gold carrots. Instead, everyone gets a porkchop or carrot vendor and ignores the entire concept of food outside of using gapples as buff potions. Food being a dead feature in a survival game honestly could have its own video.

I agree with the central point here. No item/mob/structure/whatever should have a single use. It should either have no purpose and just be decorative/ambiance/realism (polar bears, desert wells, rotten flesh, dragon egg) or should have a bunch of uses. Like would anyone have been mad if armadillos had no item drop? people don't hate polar pears, pandas, bats, axolotl. (and yes I know pandas can produce slime) people want these creatures because they are cute. that's it. If an item only has one use it should be something transformative like elytra, sculk sensors, shulker shells, netherite (I count because of the fireproof property on items). The only single use items which make sense are like, nether stars and hearts of the seas, and even then adding some more uses would be cool.
@paulnamesa
@paulnamesa 3 ай бұрын
List of what I consider single use items ignoring just food items, purely decorative items, or items who's single use is crafting something else which is multi-functional, a food item or purely decorative (kelp only makes dried kelp but dried kelp is both a food and a smelting resource and a decorative block) List: Spider eyes - food source does not count as a second use. Armadillo Scute - as discussed Rabbit Hide - making leather doesn't count because of how much easier it is to get leather other ways, kill one cow and you have more leather than killing 8 rabbits. Rabbit Feet - I think like how scute makes a combo-effect potion, rabbits feet should make jump boost and luck potions which might actually be interesting enough to be worth it. Dragon's Breath - this really needs a meaningful use, lingering potions are just a downgrade on splash potions, nobody uses tipped arrows either. Echo Shard - lets be honest, by the time you raid a deep dark, the deep dark itself is the only place you will ever die. Nautilus Shells - boarder-line as conduits could be considered to have multiple uses. Phantom Membrane - boarder-line as although slow falling is a unique potion which can have cool uses, repairing elytra is an end game activity at which point you almost certainly have mending which is just a superior option in every way.

im gonna say... im only a little bit into the video, but. well, im one whos against adding items that have one use from a mob... simply because then you're being told exactly how to use them like in that sense, i think the crab is worse than the sniffer, because imagine ... how annoying of a forced journey it'd be to go find a crab claw for extra reach when like okay, yes thats something id like to see in terraria, but... it just doesnt fit minecraft very well. itd make me go to crabs, then get a claw and never go see them again but my biggest thing is that... it *reduces* crabs to just being that! like, do we reduce sheeps to being beds? for a time, we almost did. but you can not only build and make beds, but make stuff like banners too, or use wool to occlude sound in deep dark ...so yeah, i can agree that i dont like when they add single use materials BUT i think i know why they do it for mobs. they're afraid of people calling the mobs useless. remember, whenever they add a mob that just does a few lil neat things like i dunno, the fox. people ignore it and call it useless. and mojang WANTS people to not only not complain about mobs being Useless to them (especially if from a vote) but they also ... really, really want to Make people interact with new content, i think. you can also look at how new content always has other smaller bits of new content Made For It specifically, so to speak i think it is a pretty big issue, but i think a lot of it nowadays comes down to 3 things 1) the aforementioned fear of adding something like a polar bear, fox, or panda, that doesnt Directly Benefit the player. 2) marketing. they want to make the cool new copper relevant, so of course its used for the new sypglass alongside the other new material you can mine for. its more marketable if its all tied together... even if thats gimmicky 3) planning for a future that will only be a thing in 20 years. they say stuff like "we want to open design space" for echo shards... so that in the future they can add more uses for these items. it is worth noting that many of the dev team wants minecraft to live for at least 50 years, if not 100. its bold, but its what they want. it might explain why they take things so carefully. they dont want to ruin a game... so they jjust keep adding side-content, so as to not ruin the core of the game. 7:54 i agree IMMENSELY on. you dont need unique Stuff All The Time just like... unique Combinations of existing stuff is good enough already; look at the Meadow biome from 1.18 it has a unique roster of mobs (rabbits and sheep) and unique feature placement in rarely spawning birch trees, but ALWAYS having bee nests in those trees. as well as flowers that you can find in flower forests already it doesnt make them into nuisance biomes of "ugh, i have to go find a darn meadow cus i need this flower / mob" its just "oh i found a meadow, nice. i wanted some sheep and i get some alliums too? sick!" but also, 8:15 "the reward is that you get to see it" see... that doesnt cut it for angry minecraft players who moan about how they hate the direction of the game, about adding useless things. what a Useless biome, they would say. theres No Reason to go there. because they yearn for extrinsic reasons

I like your sheep example and uses for wool, but I would like to remind you that leather from cows has 7 crafting recipes. Pigs are also completely useless in crafting, but I let them pass because they are an eccentric mode of transport. And if you want a mob to both not be useless and a one pump chump, just add more recipes. Integrate it in any way whatsoever. Have the rabbit leather server as replacement for the normal one, instead of forcing to search them out for a bundle.

I play minecraft mostly because of command blocks and data packs, and i am just not going to play versions 1.19 and further. At first i stopped at this version because of the chat reports, but later (when i assume that feature was removed, because i haven't heard of it ever since) i didn't want to play newer versions because the game design was just getting too inconsistent. Wardens, who are just glorified instakill traps; maces, which deal irrationally high damage, that looks like not a single game designer was even informed about their creation, but mojang executives said to keep these because of the hype it caused, not looking into details. And as a contrast, a lot of added features were so useless, that if they were a mod, no one would even bother installing them, like sniffers and their flower seeds. It all looks like a very terribly assembled mod collection. It is so bad, i wouldn't even play it for display entities, interaction entities, and new commands.

also, i think in terms of places you return to like amethyst geodes, i really hope they do something like the unloaded activity mod... so i dont have to babysit everything (be within 128 blocks) and i just wanna say IVE BEEN SAYIN !! ALL OF THIS!! YOU GET ME!!! final edit: i will say, i do think i'd go for a middleground for the spyglass requriing gold and amethyst. i think it makes it feel nice when i find amethyst that its like "oh heck yea i can make a spyglass now" but it feels REALLY tacky when i have to combine it with copper. not every recipe has to be 100% literal or one to one with how it looks... or else the crafting table would need iron. plus amethyst is a quartz, which is. glass.

I think they should remove rabbit's hide from the game. Nothing else. Just rabbit's hide. Bunnies drop leather, and all rabbit's hide gets converted into leather.

i hate how creatures or blocks only come out for like one or two purposes and thats it. i wouldn't mind as much if these systems interacted more even in useless ways but they dont.

also these features can be rare or are only spawn in a certain location it can be kinda sad trying to find these places only for you to use it in one recipe.

We can argue back and forth over “necessary” new items, but I think there’s a better verdict: There is nothing wrong with adding new things/modifying old things. It’s how they actually IMPLEMENT them that causes these issues. I couldn’t care less that they added camels and armadillos, I would just ignore them if they didn’t add to my experience. This doesn’t mean that I dislike them, rather I just wished I had a purpose in finding them.

As an addendum, I have seen so many mods make ACTUAL USE out of the newer mobs and materials… it’s pretty pathetic how much (practical/logical) use mod creators have found for amethysts, copper, and turtle scutes.

One of my favorite mods, HexCasting, uses amethyst as magic material. I think it's the only mod that actually encourages creating an outpost near an amethyst geode (or any structure now that I think about it).

yes, this is an issue i touch on in my latest video about lateral game design-armadillos and their scute and stuff are fine, but that's as long as they have more than one purpose. the more links/uses they have, the more vertical the design is. if a feature is sufficiently vertical, go ahead and put it in the game! but as it stands, the features they add are lateral and shallow.

I agree with this, a lot of people say the issue is that it’s not simple like old Minecraft anymore, which to an extent makes sense, but your view makes a lot more sense. They just need to connect stuff. It’s like every item is a branch out for its thing and that’s it. Absolutely nothing seems to link

as someone who used to play MC a LOT back in the day, i feel like one thing thats been lost over the past few years is that, minecraft is a game, its not an educational platform, it never was, sure it can be used as such but thats not the core intention of it, there's so many things that would be amazing to have in game but arent because "oh if we add sharks then people will kill them" or "we cant have sharks hostile because then we'll have a second Jaws scenario, and we cant have them passive because then people who dont know better will go up to them IRL and risk getting hurt" at what stage did MC become the method in which we learn about the real world? last i checked there are very few "cubes" found in nature and i cant just make a 1 meter squared dirt tower all the way to the upper atmosphere we have other things such as firefly's which wherent added because "frogs cant eat firefly's or they'll die" which is only true for certain frogs and certain firefly's, and last i checked MC wasnt an indepth review of the trolly problem, if we dont want frogs to eat firefly's just make it so they cant, heck, let them get poisoned if they do, poison cant bring you beyond half a heart anyway why would it be different for a frog?

The feeling that Minecraft was just getting bloated with updates was something I had been feeling for a while now. Though in defence of the various food items, I love having lots of different food items, even if they don't necessarily do anything different. I would love for there to be more craftable foodstuffs, and the existence of major mods like Cooking for Blockheads and Pam's Harvestcraft hopefully means my sentiment is shared by others. Thank you for the video

I think it is moreso about wanting to add novelty over function. Minecraft is not primarily a game meant to be enjoyed anymore, it's a product meant to be purchased, especially with the bedrock marketplace being such a big thing.

This is why bundles were introduced- consolidating all your one-off gimmicky inventory clutter into stacks is quite nice and helpful. Unfortunately, inventory clutter isn’t the only problem with this creative choice, so it’s more of a band-aid than a solution
