I'm fairly certain that JVM is a virtual machine environment. Not a compiler.

Minecraft is a computer program. Computer programs run on computers. Alan Turing was one of the people that helped jump start the creation of computers. Many kids like Minecraft. Kids wish they knew how to mod Minecraft. Everyone should learn to code!

I agree it wasn't the best TED talk i ever listened to... but also i think that most people should at least have the opportunity to learn how to code...

The future will be ruled by technology so much more than it is today. Without knowledge of how to control that world, many people will be at a severe disadvantage. While I agree that people shouldn't be forced to learn how to code, the opportunity should be made highly accessible, and should be on the same level as learning algebra, or a secondary spoken language.

m3tasc0ut Yes, it is a useful skill, but it shouldn't be made out as necessary. We will still need doctors, nurses, lawyers, accountants, bankers, police, firemen, politicians, soldiers, farmers, mechanics, technicians, teachers, musicians, business people, etc, etc. Maybe one day all of these occupations will be replaced by machines, but that day is going to come long into the future. Claiming that you won't amount to anything in the near future without coding knowledge is just ludicrous.

Brandon Bahret I agree. I don't think anyone was suggesting that coding is to be the ultimate profession, but rather in fact how even more prevalent it will become still, and how knowledge of manipulating, and controlling that world through code should come as natural to people as at least basic math, or a second language. Accessibility, and the consideration of this very point will be what prompts society to ensure this kind of education is disseminated adequately.
