I think you might me right about the first trailer's backlash being deliberate.... they specifically saying "we wanted to avoid an ugly sonic situation" seems like bait to get people talking even more about it, and then when they show the better stuff or people realize the movie wasn't bad, they already got the extra publicity. Seems like a new marketing strategy. Get an IP with a big fanbase, make them criticize you to no end, redeem yourself and there you go. The entire world has heard about your product

Jack is not afraid of self promotion....he shares that quality (and heaps of goofiness) with Ryan Reynolds. Jason looks like a monster, but he's really a silly nerd like a lot of us. I think something that might also have contributed to the better reception of the second trailer is the fact that we had already let the knowledge of the bad and controvertial stuff sink in. We already knew it was going to be live action, we already knew it would have a Jumanji style story, that mobs would kinda be uncanny, etc. So for this trailer, the new stuff was everything except the bad stuff.

I’m pretty sure that the production people in charge of the first trailer were trying to make the best trailer they could to promote the movie and generate excitement, and that they just missed the mark (badly). Sometimes people going through a creative process just get derailed and it’s only after getting significant negative feedback do they start to realize that something went wrong and that they need to change directions. But the thing to remember is that just because the trailer was bad doesn’t necessarily mean that the movie will be bad (and vice versa; see The Matrix 4). I really still think that the movie is going to be good and that the studio just muffed the initial trailer. I mean seriously, who creates a trailer where the majority of the dialogue is “what the hell”, “whatever”, and “what a toolbag”. It was basically a master class in what NOT to do when making a movie trailer. I just hope that they learned their lesson and that tomorrow’s trailer has a much better showing.
