Those "slot" images are not circular - those are 9-slice (or 9-patch) images! Instead of having a fixed-size sprite, gamedev can use those to have custom-size sprites. How it works is you create a regular image and in your engine, you define slices - X and Y axis lines (2 of each) at which you divide your original image. This divides your sprite into nine patches. When resizing a 9-slice sprite, corner pieces are left as original from the division, meanwhile sides and center patches are getting stretched or, more preferably, tiled. This means we could see a custom-size inventory slots. Personally I doubt it's gonna be a vanilla game thing, but definitely something resource pack creators and modders can take advantage of.

Some additional features that should be added with this: - Should be toggleable so that we can change it to either vertical or horizontal. - Keep the old hotbar texture so that it doesn't get ruined. - Definitely change the texture of different storage items but not the player inventory, too bright.

Idk, even more UI options in game would start to just fill up the screen and especially if your on multiplayer as well, having more covering your screen makes U far less aware in the pause menu for any dangers in survival. To have it as a toggled setting out of the Minecraft world that's always able to be switched on or off or adjusted however I'd be fine with.

If the hotbar texture changes that means the oldest texture in Minecraft will be removed. When the hotbar was added in classic 0.0.19a it used the same texture it uses now meaning a 15.5 year old texture would be gone.

I don't like the hotbar. It's too bright, to large and I like that the old one was a bit transparent. I don't like that the storage inventory is horizontal either. I do like that they try to give a new look to the different inventory menu but one step at a time, the colors are a good start.

Extremely bright, drawing your attention way more than it should. The transparency is also gone, not allowing it to blend into the background when not in use, or putting more focus on the items that you do have in your hotbar. Way less immersive overall, looks like a stamp/watermark instead of a UI made for the game. Also, is it just me feeling the new stylized numbers are harder to read?

Idk I prefer the current version that has a vertical alignment. The horizontal version will make the items appear smaller on the screen. Also, the colors might make it difficult to see certain items when browsing and for people who are color blind. Rather than a UI change, I would like to see a solution to the small inventory space. (Bundles aren't helping much in their current state.)

As a bedrock player I will hate this if it goes through because it is something that has been around for a while and is perfect the way it is. I get the color coding by why the circular slots. The best thing about this is if it becomes a toggle option in the settings menu and not something that is stuck like that.

The colour on other inventories looks okay. It's a nice indicator of what you've accessed without being too obtrusive a change. The player inventory looks like a flashbang in a dark cave waiting to happen, even more than we already have. That'll probably make the hotbar harder to read at a glance. I hope they can make it so that the player inventory darkens or changes colour based on surrounding light level. Bonus points if it can double as a mob-spawnability indicator. They better keep it vertical, though. The mock-ups look to increase the distance for moving items by a lot. Not to mention that most reading occurs horizontally, not vertically, so the horizontal design tends toward reading the first line of the chest, then the first line of the player inventory. Doesn't feel natural.

Having two vertical columns (especially with different background colours) is pretty standard from a UI cleanliness perspective though. See: newspapers, books, and many journal articles. However I do agree with the distance argument.

@@elektron1242 It's not really two columns, though. You're not reading a book one page at a time, but more likely jumping back and forth between the two inventories. That makes it behave more like one large column. If two columns are really desired: just turn the inventories sideways. Double chest + player is 9x9, so you don't need to make the UI block wider for a columnar aesthetic.

The only thing I'm currently agreeing with people about is the possible brightness and setting to toggle for it but I don't see why people are getting so worked up on the UI and the negatives when they are so minor it's a waste of time crying over it. 1 of the previous comments I just read was about it being 1 of the oldest things in Minecraft being changed. So what, it's not a big deal, just a different design. Yes it's very easy to remember but I wouldn't say I ever cared for the UI design or liked it, if anything I never really did like the old one being the current UI. To me a bright white light in darkness is just a flash bang for your eyes, burns people's rednas and is already a huge distraction as is. I'd rather have softer colours and shades and an indication of what I'm accessing when I'm looting for example.

The only problem with changing the in-game screens to the new oreui system is that it cannot be changed by resource packs or addons like the current json ui system can, meaning all current UI packs will not be able to change how these new UI screens look. I really hope this is changed before they are fully implemented because this breaks every single UI pack for Bedrock, and some of them are used by a lot of people.

A good application of the horizontal layout would be for ultra wide screens, but imho you should still have the option to revert back to vertical layout if you prefer it. Especially if somehow you're still using a 4:3 screen, where the vertical layout would probably stay mandatory.

For real though, they have a whole library of videos of bugs to squash that have been in the game SINCE LAUNCH, but nah, gotta fuck with the UI and cause more bugs and issues. I wouldn't shit on Bedrock so much if the game was at least in a "playable" state. Fix the bugs, fully implement the combat changes (or at least let the off-hand work like in Java), and freaking fix redstone (I don't want quasi, fuck that. Tbf this layout is probably good for mobile devices were vertical screen space is limited so having the ui take up more horizontal space is a more effective use of screen space and allows it to be bigger and easier to touch

New look is awesome but the inventory HAS to stay on top. It just makes sense. Also the hotbar being solid and not transparent is really strange. Looks too clean but too in your face and bright. The current one feels so natural and fitting.

@@callyralNot necessarily. Since at least in Java each menu is an image file they could just make the inventory menu and the container menu seperate files since they aren't physically connected.

I don't imagine the UI code and stuff for java will change for java at all, and in the end the stuff they are changing in bedrock would technically make it easier for artists to make these types of packs. with Java because there's so much existing code relying on itself I would imagine they would only change the existing textures and not change how they are formatted at all, so old texture packs would still probably function the same.

Something you will find in nearly every company (except government run ones (shoutout to the IRS)) is the need for a "job". Change for the sake of change is actually change for the sake of quarterly projections and justification for positions. There is a team of individuals who are all employed at Mojang/Microsoft, and their livelihoods all rely on "Doing something worth being kept around for", which is why you randomly get UI updates like this. If Mojang was 5 dudes they would probably only ever focus on future additions and community rework, 10 and they can dedicate people to media, 50 and they have to worry about payrolls and promotion, teams and management, financing and such. Mojang employs ~600 people in Stockholm, and have the parent company Xbox Game Studios, and then they have the parent company of Microsoft Gaming, and by extension, Microsoft. There are 100s of randoms who all need to do SOMETHING to stay on board and pay bills. I bet only 10 of them even understand why Vertical motion would be better for management, and only 2 of them care about the value of an unchanging texture. It doesn't matter I'll just get a texture pack.

The thing is, there are UI features that DO need reworking and they refuse to do that. The custom superflat menu for example. Bedrock is completely missing one, and Java's isn't much better with it just being a text box. They could also bring back Customized Worlds that they removed so long ago, instead of hoping players just use data packs which require external tools. Instead, they replace a good UI with a worse looking, laggier one without texture pack support while the old UI was extremely customizable.

The problem isn't that there are too many teams with too specific goals, it's that some guy who works for some group of guys who works for some guy in a a different company, who works for some other guy etc. etc. is completely out of touch with what you actually want to happen in the game. The project lead for this isn't a person who saw a problem, it's the tail end of a person who was told to find a problem in 2 days, and fix it in 3, who sent the order down the chain. It really only takes like 2 people to make the chain stop being good for the health of the game, and can you imagine how much bureaucracy is involved in a company like Microsoft who is overlooking this Swedish company across the globe.

I like the colored containers, but changing the style and especially the positioning just looks wrong. I don't use the crafting book myself, but I _am_ curious how they intend to make that coexist with the horizontal layout here.

big issue with making it horizontal rather than vertical is that it puts everything father away. Consider an object that's on the far left of the chest that you want to put in the far right of your inventory. That has to cover like 18 square's worth of space. Meanwhile in the current system moving something from top of chest to bottom of inventory (your hotbar) would only be like 9, half as much! Side by side, at least using a cursor, is hugely unergonomic

Counterargument:That issue will affect way less items because there are way less inventory slots vertically than there are horizontally, meaning there's less chance for the longer reach to affect you than when the chest were on top.

@@GamerTowerDX Overall, Horizontal still loses. Since the centres of the two inventories are farther apart when horizontal the maths works out that you lose more time Horizontal. Also with the fact objects default to the top left of whatever container their in when shiftclicked: Top left square of both sides is set farther when Horizontal, so also a timewaster.

They are probably changing it because the GUI doesn't work with a future idea. Couldn't tell you what that idea is, but you generally change something if the current implementation is limiting the game in some way.

I'd say this is more of a "unifying visual design of the brand" thing. Outside of the game, Minecraft has a well defined visual identity, but in-game visuals don't follow it - in fact, they're still a hotch-potch of what basically is Programmer's Art. Hence the changes.

@@goSciuKM I mean, not really, I guarantee one of the most iconic parts of minecraft is the GUI, which has remained mostly unchanged since the beginning, and I think most people (myself included) prefer it this way, since it's part of it's identity, I have always hated the term "programmer art" like someone doing everything themself can't make good looking visuals, it's just ridiculous to me, it's so people can label something as "garbage" without coming out and saying it, the GUI is one of the most recognizable parts of minecraft, when you see it, you know what it is, I enjoy the concept of improving a design and making it look even more detailed and nice, but why the f are they changing the layout to be side by side, at that point they are finding an excuse to annoy almost all players for no reason other than to get people to talk more about the game, good or bad

since the grids are horizontal rectangles (3x9), side by side makes mouse travel distance way longer, it is fine for controllers but i dont think it will fit well for mouse and keyboard

I think in most situations like this in videogame development "if it ain't broke don't fix it", should always be applied to the development process and this should be no exception. people didnt complain about how the inventory looked they complained how small it is.

I think I wouldn't mind the change to inventories if it was a bit more stylized, like having the latch on the chest at the top and then if it was also saturated a bit less. Don't like the idea of them being circles though. Smooth edged squares are okay. Not a fan of it being in the side though. Everything in the game is wider than it is tall, making it be like this is just gonna be awkward. I also definetly dont like the hotbar being opaque if its that chunky. Feels like it takes up too much space by having it connect to the bottom of the screen and id prefer it to be higher up.

Looks alright, though making the storage box horizontal just feels wrong since most of the time youre moving your mouse vertically to organize and select so going out of your way to change your direction of view horizontally can be a massive misfire. Also the item number display being opaque isnt the best idea, youre only losing a few pixels but i dont think that should ever happen so it should be translucent or go behind the item. Besides that i have no problem, gives more opportunities to make the game more different and lively than before!

For mobile it makes sense, as you can scale the inventory bigger on smaller screens for better accessibility when its aligned horizontally. But for all the other platforms it will take a while to get used to a new orientation.

I agree, some UI packs literally have millions of downloads. They really need to make it so when you have a UI pack enabled, the json ui files from that pack override the new oreui screens. Then they could keep the new UI and keep UI pack makers happy.

@bi_z_ar the issue is choice, if you don't get to choose you're bound not to like it Some people just want edge to go away and some people want to use it, which is fair too.

Honestly the colours are VERY cool, I would love to see that, but also I'M SO TIRED OF THEM CHANGING THE UI EVERY UPDATE CAN THEY STOP ALREADY?????

for me this is clearly mojang laying the ground work for a inventory update. The fact that aren`t just changing the texture but also decupling the inventory from the container you open, for me sugests that now you can increase both the size of the inventory or the container without having to remake all inventory texture in the game. also there was that one block snapshot that clearly mocked the inventory situation, and since mojang takes a long time to actually ship changes to the game, the timing actually works out

@@blueheracross they will probably call some other name like the "treasury hunt" update and add more location based items like heart of the sea and shit
