I was about to argue that this was definitely the late stages of capitalism because the only way you can progress in it is to get so greedy you take over everything and destroy it, but they haven't even gotten there yet. All capitalism is guaranteed to become the story of Icarus; they fly too close to the sun, burn up, and then crash into the ocean below. But they haven't even succeeded in having a completely locked down monopoly yet. Somehow they're already burning up before they could even bleed the community dry, and idk if it's incompetence on their part or a surprising amount of awareness from the community. Maybe a combo of both? I'm kinda proud. Hopefully Modrynrh works out better.

One thing about Modrinth I really like is their maven api. A developer can easily make a mod interact with other mods by simply adding a dependency from Modrinth directly, I don't have to download the mod/hope the mod has uploaded their mod to a specific maven repository.

It's important to note that the api changes are fully at the will of mod developers. They can choose whether their mods can be downloaded through third party launchers.

That *doesn't* allow you to use their name or branding, which relates to fraud, trademark (possibly), and computer misuse law. My favourite CurseForge bug is that mods you can see on the webpage are not necessarily on the app. The "Falling Tree Mod" (mine a whole tree by breaking the lowest + faster leaf decay) for example. It just straight up, doesn't find it. Even when I click "open this mod in the app" on the webpage doesn't work...

​@@sylv256 "anymore"? A lot of it just flat out isn't true to begin with. For instance the claim that viruses got spread through compromised curseforge accounts, which just isn't true. The virus was designed to spread to other .jar files on your system so mod developers, who tend to download and use a lot of .jar files, would get infected, and then the virus would copy itself into their in-development versions of the mods before upload. It was phrased like it was an issue with curseforge and their security, but it wasn't even remotely related to that. It'd be like blaming walmart because you got the flu there from other customers.

Honestly, I hope modrinth gets more traction. I absolutely love the site. Unlike CF, whose performance and ease of use in my experience has been terrible, I had no problem updating and editing my projects on modrinth. Modrinth's design is sleek and easy on the eyes, while I still flashbang myself on CF. For some reason, CF still uses their legacy site for alot of pages (sometimes I ask myself why they're calling it the legacy version if they're still using it). CF always tries to push their launcher and makes me wait to start my download but modrinth just straight up lets me download what I want. The only reason why I'm still using CF truth be told, is that CF projects get more visibility because of its bigger user base.

When I ran Better MC (Forge) BM3 with complementary shaders (yes I didn't get malware, this was a couple days ago.) I got 80/90 fps with freezing frames on Curseforge launcher. Then I did it with ATlauncher and I got 100-200 fps and no freezing. If that doesn't say something about Curseforge then idk what does.

Minecraft doesnt care what its launched by, UNLESS you set a custom java version and/or custom JVM arguments in the launchers settings, which can be done on both (although changing java itself on curseforge is not easy to do)

The most likely reason for AT performing better than CF is because when launching Minecraft, CF makes some errors (learned this from Lunapixel.) AT supposedly makes less errors than CF so the performance is better.

The key takeaway here is that competition is good. Whether people want to stick with CF or try something new, the fact that there are viable options will always be better than putting your eggs all in one basket. I'm still waiting for a serious competitor to Nexus. ModDB is something, but it has its own wealth of problems.

Another example was the exodus of modders moving from forge to fabric; to be honest I think this all stinks, while I understand both sides rationale it doesn't change the fact that players are also getting screwed over by this mess and this spillover of this feud between developers and platforms does nothing but force people to take sides and (maybe it's me just being selfish and petty but) that is the last thing I want to deal with when I just want to enjoy a game with my favorite mods.

There isn't any real exodus. ONE person and a small clique split off, and they themselves were so toxic that fabric didn't last more than a few years before its entire community (such as it is) split again into quilt. Every serious content mod for minecraft is on Forge. The forge community is about minecraft, the fabric community is about how much it hates forge.

For a user you're getting effectively double the Ads as a result. Before Modrinth eventually gets owned by someone it will be fine. Then we just have 2 Curseforges. Modrinth is less then a 1 piece of tissue paper on a serious wound. There isn't anything wrong with standing up for yourself, but it is just going to make everything worse still unless society grows and stops going off the deep end.

I'll second that. There was a lot of backlash at the beginning (Forge is evil, go to Fabric!), but my experience with Fabric has been... disappointing to say the least. I personally never used Fabric because their lack of experience did not make me want to try it. Rightfully so. A couple weeks ago, I tried creating a Fabric profile to use MiniHUD (which discontinued support for Forge) and low and behold, Fabrig is plagued with compatibility issues between the loader, the API and to mods themselves. I play in 1.20.1 and the optifabric mod for 1.20.1 has compatibility issue with the latest available version of the loader and the API for 1.20.1 so I had to try older versions of them until I found a working version... Talk about user experience. Result of it: went back to Forge and I use the fabric profile only when I need miniHUD, I mark what I need and switch back to the forge install.

@@superslash7254 the fabric modding community is very much alive. A lot of insanely good performance and content mods are only available for fabric (and via modrinth). And forge is still a legal (and technical) minefield from a devs POV. Forge is IMO just... worse and they should have just discontinued it after Fabric gained traction.

As another mod developer staying on CF, and only using modrinth as a way for 9minecraft to be lower in recommendations; there is a lot of misinformation / incomplete stuff... but yeah here is anyway some points to make in answer to some of them : - First about the website being catastrophic, it's not that horrible (yeah sometime it can be tiring to edit a mod and space stuff not working well ok) but updating a mod don't require any special work except checking the version and changelog. I mean, especially for an optimization mod, you don't totally remake the mod page all the time. And a rework has been under work since a long time, when they are talking of "mod pages changes not updating" they are talking of the fact that using the new UI don't update as frequently the mod page as using the old one, yeah but in fact the mod page has been updated, it's only a visual issue of an under work system. It also has changed a lot since, lots of this complaints are outdated because as said the rework of the website was and is still under work -> With the new UI many changes have been subjects to reworks based on feedbacks and lots of pages have not been updated at the moment, so yeah it's kinda overexaggerating the troubles caused by something under work. + tbh the new modrinth changes with modpacks / textures packs / datapacks etc have also had issues of this type... - Second, payments. Curseforge payments depends on the global websites gains. Because to make it short they get money from other places than mod pages (mainly from their launcher) and because most of huge mods downloads from modpacks / the CF launcher because you don't actually visit the mod page. It's stupid to think that 100k downloads a month will make the same as another month, there is no such thing as 10 downloads = 10 CF points or equivalent downloads / points conversion rate. Many other things have an impact, like releasing multiple updates in a close amount of time will make each small update do fewer downloads (and could be considered as a way to scam the system by spamming modpacks updates downloads to artificially grow the number of downloads that way). They are also "inflation bubbles" where for like a week or 1/2 month you'll get like +30% revenues, but they aren't your "normal revenues", they only are due to a boost in CF gains, so it should not be expected as what you should usually make for a month. -> so yeah thinking "omg we're getting scammed i earned a bit less when doing a bit more" is just the viewpoint of someone that never read or tried to understand how the system work in the first place, it's more complex than a 1 = 1 ratio - Third, about the virus story that happened recently, lots of rumours are starting to spread that some Modrinth-related peoples would have paid guys to make "as much trouble as possible" on Curseforge, in order to help them to gain attention toward their soon to release mod launcher. Ik it's kinda conspiracy theories but at the same time kinda strange that it seems like it only affected Overworlf-related websites and the timing feel a bit too perfect, sorry but i have to doubt of bit of modrinth on this. (btw CF don't really have any responsability in this whole malware issue, the breach wasn't on their side and the virus not detected by almost every existing anti-virus.. but peoples tend to think that modrinth is totaly protected while it's absolutely not the case more than CF) They also multiple times put them excessively in a victim position in different cases with CF while they perfectly knew the motives behind some decisions, only trying to look clean in opposition to "the evil CF" which makes me doubt a bit of them... i don't like this whole thing of "look how mean and bad was CF to us when we made a system advantaging us", hiding behind "but we have great intentions for the community 😢". It's always easier to say it when it benefits you or give your website more attention. - Fourth about their API, as said earlier since almost all the publicity is on the launcher, allowing anyone to use the API would reduce DRASTICALLY the revenues of mod authors, because it would be harder to check how a mod was downloaded and adapt in consequence the revenues earned, and a big loss for CF. It's easier for Modrinth to complain since it benefits them largely more than the other way around So yeah sorry for this long paragraph but this video is way too incomplete / lacks of updated informations, way too one-sided and excessively antagonising CF for something supposed to not raise free hate (which is totally the case in the comments)

It was already bad enough when mods were split between game versions, and it became worse when Fabric released, and mods started to become split between the 2 mod loaders. Now, while competition is good to prevent the mod distribution platforms from getting too scummy, like you said, it will make creating your dream modpack even harder now that mods will also become split between mod platforms.

Fabric was made because of some forge modloader issues or coding specifics that hindered some modders. Now there is also another mod loader called Quilt with some mods being Quilt only as well. Thankfully, this one has support for 99% of fabric mods so it isn't really an issue in terms of low mod author use. I was also very very hesitant about moving from Forge, but Sodium + Iris mods has been such an upgrade for me. Many essential type mods and Fabric/Quilt equivalent versions of other favorite mods are out now that the switch is easier to try. Another big plus was that MultiMC has support for all modloaders, making installation super easy. Now Im back to waiting for some mods to update to newer MC versions like before lol

Restricting their API wasn't especially ideal but between that and knowing all devs would have earned at least 30 to 50% less money as one myself, sometime you need to make a restrictive choice, and talking for 3 minutes of how bad this idea was before saying "oh btw i said that but yeah it's true that without that they would have lost a huge part of their main money making method, so they were kinda forced to do that" is only a way to antagonize CF for no reason. Saying modrinth don't do this kind of stuff is stupid since modrinth benefits way more of being able to use mods on CF than the other way around, and I doubt that CF love the idea of not only losing money but also giving free money to concurrent for no other reason than "some peoples will find that nice"

Its really weird because I did all the scans on that Curseforge support page and there was no malware even though I vividly remember downloading Better MC (FORGE) BM3 for a test and deleting it a couple days ago. Maybe it was before it got compromised. If that's so, then I dodged a bullet.

I hope I can get all my favorite mods on Modrinth, but I don't see that happening for a long time. I don't like CurseForge at all, but I will say in the last couple months or so they did something to their backend or CDN and now stuff loads and updates extremely quickly. I was impressed when I went to add mods to a custom pack and just flicked my mouse wheel and let it scroll. That would NEVER have been able to load like that a year ago.

Well, Modrinth is also more Fabric-heavy and encourages people to use Fabric, because it's more modern and most devs on there use it, while CurseForge literally has Forge in the name.

i haven't used Curseforge much at all since MC 1.7, and when i came back to Minecraft around MC 1.16, i was only using maybe 4 mods at any time. now i have a small Create modpack with ~20 mods, and 90% of them use Modrinth. i couldn't be happier with Prism Launcher+Modrinth.

Sodium has gone back to using CF, the notice is no longer on the page and their latest update was Feb 8 2024. Also none of this was Curseforge's doing its all Overwolf, no one wanted to use the CF app because it required Overwolf to run along side it and that app has a detrimental effect on peoples PC's so they launched a "stand alone" version that in fact just hid Overwolf from popping up and you can still see it running in the system tray.

I have been playing minecraft since 2 months ago and only recently putting Mods in my world. Curseforge is also one of the platform i know first. It’s quite easy to use, since you can customize the modpack and else. It list what kind of mods you have installed and notify you if there’s any update available. That’s also the thing that made me aware that many of the mods are leaving the platform for their newly updates and moving to the Modrinth. So I just do that, still using my default launcher from microsoft store, I stumbled around to understand how to make any of my mods work. Luckily in every page of the mods I want to download, they mention the mods needed in order for certain mod works. It’s quite easy to follow. Then uninstall the curseforge, because i feel like there’s some problem with it one way or another that causes these modders move to another platform. But still, I feel curseforge is convenient to use with the feature I mentioned above.

GD launcher auto downloads some dependencies but not all dependencies. I don’t fully understand it but they basically download dependencies they themselves trust. Besides that they have an check for updates button and an update all mods button, they kinda make the second thing you want pointless.

I have been using curseforge for years now just because "it was good enough". Even though I constantly was complaining how slow(more like clunky) and unresponsive it is, it did the job. I should clarify that I play on an older version(1.12.2), so some mod distributing services might not have mods for the version. Today I tried Modrinth and it is a blessing. So fast, responsive and the collection of mods isn't much less than CF's. Additionally, there's this stuff that was discussed in this video, so I think I will switch to Modrinth altogether

I'm also a big fan of the sims 4 as well as minecraft, and the sims devs recently worked with curseforge to set up a whole mod page for the sims, it's frustrating how lazy they can be even though they have such a popular website.

Yes, there is definetely hope. There have been many incredible optimization mods made recently (sodium, lithium, starlight, ferritecore, modernfix, to name a few) that greatly improve the games performance making it run with so much less resources

Sodium is utterly insane for optimization of modern versions, and if you want something to make older versions just a tinge better than they used to be, Ears, despite being primarily a Fabric mod that modifies skin rendering for extra features, also has Forge backports that let 1.9+ skins render in 1.8 and earlier. Both of these are entirely clientside, and don't effect gameplay outside of what the individual lone player sees, and thus could be used even on Vanilla servers without issue or tripping anticheat.

​@@tearex8688 Most of the mods on there can be found in both places, albeit Modrinth is more Fabric/Quilt-centric. This isn't because of the site itself, but simply the community who upload there. That said, CurseForge is obviously still the larger platform, not even counting a large back catalog of mods for older game versions that are no longer maintained contributing to its higher numbers. To give an idea from a practical standpoint, I use ~20 mods total in a typical game (Fabric), and only have to go to CurseForge for two of them (namely Litematic and WorldEdit). Literally every other mod I use is on Modrinth.

I will wait for Modrinth to have enough functionality to run my and my buddy's modpack, and then, when we can do it, we will migrate our modpack there. Sadly now not all mods from our pack had been uploaded there, so through Modrinth, we would only be able to spread our modpack in form of separate file instead of list of mods, which is very bothersome in terms of updating. We will have to stay on CF for now :'(

Revenue shares are based on getting a portion of total profits. Iris's raise in popularity does not mean their revenue share should go up, it means that they get a larger cut. A larger cut of a much smaller revenue stream will still be less money. Curseforge is not being greedy. They make dramatically less money now that they are no longer partnered with twitch. They have to rely on ad revenue because they have no other source of income. Iris developers are just delusional if they expect curseforge to make extra money appear out of nowhere at a time when Minecraft modding as a whole is financially struggling.

How is it the most important mod? Ive never needed any of those, or barely remember ever hearing of their existence. Unless curseforge shuts down, lll always use it to get my mods. A modder is a modder. Just because one gets more downloads than another, doesnt mean they should get some special treatment. Heck I didnt even know a modder could get paid for making mods there. Ive never even heard of modders getting paid for their work for any game, other than donations.

I would totally go with Modrinth, the problem is that all the mods I want to play with are on...CurseForge. A lot of the mods I like are older or inactive mods like Railcraft aren't on Modrinth sadly, and in my opinion, that is the main reason why people were more reluctant to switch to Modrinth, until CurseForge got hacked. Now I'm hoping that more mods move to Modrinth so more people can access the mods they love.

Interesting video, but there is a flaw with the video that I think needs to be addressed. You state at the end of your video that you do not want people to spread negativity regarding curseforge and instead spread positivity regarding the competition. However, if that is the goal, then your thumbnail directly goes against that by listing curseforge as evil. Yes, it is a attention grabbing thumbnail, but I'm sure there are ways to make good thumbnails without going against your own stated goal?
