When I first started playing Minecraft I would keep the music on but after a little while I turned it off since it kept distracting me from what I was doing in game and also because I couldn’t control what track it would play. So whenever I listen to the music I tend to get specific memories of me playing Xbox One Edition, the early days of playing Pocket Edition, and just scattered moments of me playing the game whenever I decided to turn the music back on for fun. C418 sure was a master at crafting some fantastic music for the game. It’s a shame that the only way he can get Minecraft to release his 3rd Volume of music is to sell the rights to Microsoft which it seems like he doesn’t want to do. But they should have only used ambient sounds (like they did for the new nether) in the Deep Dark cave biome. The Deep Dark outside of the Ancient Cities should be quiet and ominous,.

Nice video. I do think I feel different when it comes to C418’s Minecraft music. When I listen to the music, I don’t look at it with nostalgia because I never heard the music when I played all those years ago. What that allows me to do is to see that C418’s music was not only good but amazingly better than all the new music when you compare it with no veil of nostalgia. The quirky and minimalistic sound of Volume Alpha truly fits the game and even sounds good when comparing it to mainstream music nowadays. In Volume Beta, he takes that minimalistic approach and doubles it into emotional and beautiful songs. Take Alpha (the song) for example, it starts off with a small piano piece and then evolves into an orchestral song with strings and drums which is just perfect to listen to. Even his update aquatic music is amazing to listen to as well. He takes that orchestral feel and makes it slightly minimalistic again to kind of complete his work on the game like a full circle. The new tracks feel so industrial and made without emotion. The overly orchestral music kind of parodies C418’s Beta album and makes me feel like the music is dead. C418 himself has actually made more music for Minecraft, a whole new album that is estimated to be longer than Volume Alpha and Beta combined. The only problem is that Microsoft and Mojang don’t want to accept the music to be put in game because of C418’s 10 year old contract with Notch back when Minecraft was a tiny indie game. The contract said that C418 has all rights to his music and no one else owns it except for him. He just allowed Minecraft to use the music for him. What’s even worse is that C418 can’t even release the albums outside of Minecraft because it has Minecraft’s copyright in it. It’s a whole big thing but I just want to say that C418’s music feels alive not just because of nostalgia, but because of the emotion he put into it. He was the one who made Minecraft feel alive.
@TriptonicKerbal Жыл бұрын
A huge wall of text, didn’t notice. Let me summarize, I said C418’s music felt more alive than the new music because he put more emotion into it. I said that the new music felt dead and industrially made, copying C418 so they don’t have to use him again. I appreciate you for reading this summary and if you read the whole block of text I wrote, you are a legend! Thank you!

@@TriptonicKerbal Completely agree, the new Overworld music feels soulless and devoid of individuality. I also haven't heard the Minecraft music during the time i discovered Minecraft lets plays as pretty much everyone had it turned off, so i only discovered it around 5 or 4 years ago, and despite not listening to it in quite a while i still remember the majority of the pieces, unlike the new music which i was even interested in as the Nether update set my expectations fairly high, i remember listening to the full caves and cliffs album for multiple times and not even being able to remember so much as a melody besides infinite amethyst and otherside (which is the only great song in the album). The music only got worse with the "wild" update becoming not just boring "melancholic", wannabe movie ost slop but also just plain grating in some places. The tales and trails update actually improved a bit with its music, in my opinion, but it's still quite unremarkable, even the new disk, despite seemingly being a huge improvement compared to pretty much any song after 1.16 (except otherside) i still can't remember how it actually sounded like, i think it had really out of place drums as if it was trying to be a rap song or something but that's pretty much as far as my memory goes. And i want to clarify that i don't think that the new music is bad perse, it's just that it can't compare to C418's immaculate style and understanding of Minecraft's atmosphere. Also there are people that make fan music for Minecraft that's genuinely so much better than what Mojunk has been pumping out, like Firch or Ludocrypt for example.
@TriptonicKerbal Жыл бұрын
That is a perfect opinion, I like Otherside too. The Wild update, as you stated, felt completely unneeded and sounded like a hollowed out version of C418’s music and even the Caves and Cliffs music. They seem to be making music to try and paint over C418’s music instead of putting their music alongside instead. Ever since their music came out, I have noticed that C418’s music has started to play less and less when in the title screen or just playing in general. It truly is a shame. I like your opinion though. Have a great day!

My biggest issue with the new music is how location specific it is. C418's soundtrack is more about the gameplay than the atmosphere. The Nether, the overworld, the End and creative mode are all different in gameplay while the menu has no gameplay and they all have different sounds. Then they added music for underwater which also has different gameplay from the overworld. I think Daniel even wanted to add cave music but Notch didn't know how to detect if the player was or wasn't underground at the time but I might be mistaken. My point is there isn't a large enough gameplay difference between biomes to justify a change in music with the exception of the deep dark. I also find it weird that they keep adding more music every update like yeah the swamp is pretty cool but does it need it's own music and 10 advancements to go with it? (Which advancements are also something I have issues with.) And also it doesn't sound like Minecraft music to me so I usually play with a resource pack that removes anything not C418.

I know the terminology is probably incorrect and doesn't even exist, but I call Minecraft's original soundtrack associative. You have learned to associate a lot of its songs with specific things you did in the game, even something as simple as exploring a cave or doing, well, deforestation. Yeah, it's funny, but it creates simple memories that you'll always remember when you hear the soundtrack. I love when the new soundtrack plays -- but only at random -- because then I associate it with very specific memories, ones that are different from others. The problem is the soundtrack plays in specific locations most times, which means it's creating tailored moments and not those random moments. The new soundtrack is grand and beautiful, and does represent the new extremely well. I think it helps that as the soundtrack changed, so did the game. I do find some new nostalgia with the new tracks, because it's been a few years now. This was a fantastic video, love the animation and the commentary.

My only real complaint about old vs new is that due to a bunch of weird circumstances that technically can’t be helped, the older music as a whole feels more tightly woven. The reason for this is, believe it or not, motifs. The “Minecraft” theme alone appears in numerous C418 tracks, whether it be on the main menu, underwater, in the nether and in the end. The new tracks don’t get that luxury because they’re all done by different artists and aren’t able to use the old motifs due to copyright shenanigans. Basically my issues with the new soundtrack stem from the fact that unlike the new music, C418’s contributions aren’t fully owned by Microsoft.
@arch_caff5 ай бұрын
Should also clarify that C418 shouldn’t be obligated to hand over the copyright to Microsoft. Better off that way since C418 still gets financial support from music streams and purchases of his Minecraft albums. Still sucks that this whole copyright thing is preventing Volume 3 from coming out.

The 1.18 soundtrack is my absolute favorite out of all the newer music. There's just something about it that touches a really deep part of me. The song "Comforting Memories" brings me to tears whenever I hear it, as it makes me reflect on past experiences in the game. I get so nostalgic for 1.18, as when that update dropped, I was still very new to Minecraft and was still experiencing a lot of things for the first time. On top of that, it's just so...emotional, in a way. It stirs me in a way I can't explain. I agree that it will never beat the original music, but for me, it's a very personal experience whenever I hear any of the 1.18 songs ❤️

I feel like there’s a growing disparity between minecraft and the player. With mojang now more focused on “what would get people to play our game” rather than “what can we do to make this game fun”. They’ve began to make more of the pull be on the world itself rather than what you could do to influence it. Back in the early days of minecraft when fish didn’t even swim in the ocean and the end was just the dragon, the world was vast but not quite as full as it is today, the world was still, and you’d have to be the one to fill it with life. This is opposed to now where the world is vibrant, bustling. It hardly makes you feel necessary and makes you feel small, a lot of the new updates have slowly stolen the control from the player, lots lf things just happen on their own without the player needing to lift a finger, and the things the player can do feel quite inconsequential now. You can go fishing or dig up dinosaurs but it never quite feels like you’re getting anywhere from your efforts, when you thought you might’ve uncovered some great mystery or claimed some incredible treasure, you just end up circling back to where you started, and your great discovery just becomes a tedious task that nets nothing substantial for your efforts.

this might be the only time i've heard anyone talk about how much they like the new music, including myself lol. i criticize the new music a lot, but really, my biggest issue with it isn't anything to do with the music itself, but rather, how it plays. it's not going to be noticeable to someone who plays with the music off, but it doesn't actually play exclusively in the biome it was written for. most of the new tracks play in a ton of other biomes that are absolutely unrelated, and it's very noticeable. as of 1.20, swamp music still plays in the forests, cherry grove music plays in the jungles, and caves and cliffs music plays literally everywhere! i can fix it with a resource pack, thankfully, but i kinda wish i didn't have to. but i digress. i could go on and on about my opinions on the new music, as i have very many of them, but the point is: good video. i enjoyed.
@danielmorgan11267 ай бұрын
actually 'bromeliad' is meant for the jungle but also plays in the cherry grove, so, at least it's not 'echoes in the wind' in the jungle. 😂 buuuuuut, ik wym. Minecraft has a weird habit of playing several new biome emphasized songs everywhere. However, I do realize that some biomes just seem to keep other music out, I think, like deep dark and ocean.
@cornbreadbutcringey57237 ай бұрын
@@danielmorgan1126ah okey. yeah i never thought to look up the meaning of the word bromeliad, so i just kinda assumed it belonged to the biome it was added alongside. plus, it's definitely the same style as most of the update's music. idk. 1.20 was very weird with its music. i feel like it would've made more sense to just shove everything it added except crescent dunes and relic into the cherry grove. and it seems 1.21 is going to be even weirder. that being said, swamp music still shouldn't play in most of the places it does. that's completely ridiculous.
@danielmorgan11267 ай бұрын
@@cornbreadbutcringey5723 true, but, swamp music I believe only ever plays in thick wooded areas like forests, jungles, swamps and lush caves, and trails music play only in cherry groves, jungles, and deserts. So at least those six musics are the most biome exclusive. As for Caves and Cliffs and Tricky Trials, they have many tracks, some exclusive to cave and cliffs biomes. But some others also play everywhere. So, 'left to bloom', 'one more day', 'floating dream', 'comforting memories', and the first 6 tracks in tricky trials excluding 'pokopoko' (so 5 songs), are the most common new musics in the game that play everywhere.
@danielmorgan11267 ай бұрын
@@cornbreadbutcringey5723 also, sorry for sounding like a nerd, and for the long paragraph. 😭😭 I'm heavily impacted on the game's soundtracks and their biome specific musics, and I literally made a few venn diagrams about those a few days ago.
@cornbreadbutcringey57237 ай бұрын
@@danielmorgan1126 no problem! i also have a lot of opinions on the way the game's been handling music lately. like, back on swamp music: i mean, yeah the biomes are vaguely swamp-like, so i guess it makes sense if you look at it that way, but the swamp music is just so different from the rest of the music in those biomes, both stylistically and tonally, that it just doesn't really work for me. like, the swamp music is just very 'stereotypical video game swamp music' in everything from instrument choice to composition. honestly, with how empty and barren regular swamps are, i'm not even super sure i like that the swamp music plays there either. and that's before we even get into the way the music is stored internally. on java edition, swamp music has its own 'swamp' folder like the biome music in the nether does. someone clearly had a very specific idea of where these tracks should go. also, lush caves don't have trees, swamp music used to play in all badlands on bedrock edition (though this has been thankfully rectified), and trails and tales music also plays in the flower forest. idk. it just feels like mojang is just commisioning random music and trying to shove it wherever it'll go after it's done, without caring about the how it'll fit in with the rest of the biome's soundtrack. like, according to the most recent snapshot, tricky trials is gonna be having the dripstone caves share a track with the deep dark! that might actually be even worse than the swamp music thing.

I actually have never been a big fan of minecraft's new ambient tracks, they are very atmospheric but as mentioned they don't really drive you to building which is my favorite thing to do even in survival. Sometimes I feel like the increased amount of instruments clashes with what I am doing in a game when they just PLAY. THAT BEING SAID I actually think the new DISC tracks are BETTER than C418's, Lena Raine's Pigstep and other side in particular are BANGERS. They have much catchier hooks and the instrumental variety makes them more suited to music that would play on a virtual radio, especially since they all have this lofi aesthetic that some of the C418 discs just don't for some reason. Don't get me wrong there are some C418 discs I like, Ward and Melohi in particular, but if Strad wasn't so iconic it would really just be bad, and Cat and Blocks I think are overrated and nostalgia blinded where as sweden, minecraft, subwoffer lulaby, and all of C418s ambient tracks praise are WELL earned. C418 is THE master of writing long ambient piano pieces that just melt away into minecraft's world and Lena Raine is my favorite Minecraft artist for writing catchy lofi bangers that feels like it makes dietetically in a jukebox. I wish Mojang would slow down on adding more ambient tracks to a game that launched with a perfect sound track, but add a lot more discs cause frankly they never had enough and you can't head bop to most of them. In my perfect alternate timeline, they would've never made the caves and cliffs ambient stuff and Mojang would've brought C418 back JUST to write overworld music and then let Lena Raine write a TON more Lofi music discs with a faster BPM. also just wanted to say I love your animations and editing style so much :3
@firytwig4 ай бұрын
First off I like this style. There’s very few mc KZbinrs who use animations and yours is by far the cleanest and also not overwhelming, it feels like a great replacement for the standard 3rd person talking to the camera. My notes on the music: honestly the same as most commenters pointed out. Getting a C418 song is now much more rare whereas before it was all you’d hear, at least the nether update soundtrack the difference between artists wasn’t extreme. But now it means a lot of new people probably won’t have nearly as memories associated with the old soundtrack, which is a shame. Also like everyone agrees that the C418 tracks are better even if the new ones aren’t bad, so it’d be nice to have them be more common. Building a base in a biome just means that you’re going to hear the same biome specific tracks over and over again, which for people like me who spend a lot of time in one place becomes very drab. The new music is also super loud, I find myself having to constantly change the volume to not be blasted, but then put it back up be able to hear C418’s significantly quieter songs. Overall I do agree, it is nice to have music with a new vibe and there’s nothing wrong with having variety between biomes. I just don’t think the execution was quite there. Just changing the rates that they play and changing the volume would make me appreciate it much more but as it stands I don’t really like it. Also as a sidenote I miss the old conversations around the music discs. Now it’s pretty much a Pigstep landslide (which tbf I do enjoy but I still absolutely adore all the C418 discs) with a few Otherside enjoyers as well. It’s just not nearly as interesting in polls and such.

Yeah everything said is right, but the problem is that, as you emphasized, theres 2 different ways of executing music, one thats focused on the player and plays anywhere, and one thats focused on the place, and using both at the same time just doesnt work. The clash is jarring and confusing, id rather have one than two. If there was only an option to switch between "Terraria Soundtrack" to "Minecraft Soundtrack" I would be happy, but with this its just intrusive to what i would want if i turned the music on in game. They are are just stuck with the old soundtrack because completely removing it would obviously be horrendous, and adding new tracks wouldnt work either due to the reasons mentioned previously. All problems with this would be fixed by making an option like "Soundtrack: Old/Mixed/New" in the Music & Sounds menu, with mixed or new being the default, depending on microsoft's mood. This way everyone can be happy

I personally don't like the music because I feel like It's just too different from the original soundtrack. When C418 made new music for update aquatic It still had that Minecraft feel to it while still being new. New soundtrack sounds like something from a different game. I've seen people saying it sounds like something from a Zelda and I think they are right. I like to use resource pack that completely gets rid of the new music. The Nether music slaps though It's just the overworld music that feels off.

I think there’s something that I feel was left out here. I don’t know about others, but I began playing Minecraft on ps4, way back in like 2014. I was literally 7. My first time ever playing Minecraft was at a family friend’s house where they had it on ps3, and I fucked around in creative and tried to place bricks with the brick item, not block. I say that because what I want to get at is i LITERALLY grew up with minecraft. I grew up with the original soundtrack, and I love it. Every time I hear the original songs I am taken back to when I was like 9 years old and played Minecraft with my sister every day, and then we would argue because I took her diamonds or whatever and then go back to playing. The original soundtrack brings me an insane sense of nostalgia, nostalgia so intense I literally can’t find it anywhere else. The only other game I can think of is terraria, which I also grew up with, but I played it solo more than Minecraft. I mention that nostalgia because that’s what is lacking with the newer music for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love the new music, but I CAN listen to it, unlike the original soundtrack. I love both, but I literally can’t listen to the original soundtrack by itself because I WILL cry. I don’t get that with the newer music.

As someone who has always enjoyed embracing new stuff, i cant understand most people talking about C418s stuff. As you said, the new music and 1.18 generation makes discovering new terrain an absolute blast, since it captures that feeling of discovery when you first started playing. The Nether Update is easily my favorite and Caves and Cliffs close to it, and what did they have? Overhauls to world generation, massive changes to previously boring things, new soundtracks! I love just popping an Elytra or making a new world to roam on foot and exploring the world, knowing ill find something really cool along the way but not knowing where and when. Finding the Mushroom Island or a random Mansion still makes me happy, Villages to show theres some life, and with 1.21 i can have some challenge with the Trial Chambers (its actually kinda hard when youre not completely ready for it, and Ominous Trials can be literal hell if improperly prepaired). These updates make me want to explore more, not just do mega projects that i cant even complete. I want to find things ive only seen a handful of times, like Mansions and Trail Ruins, Mushroom Islands that are absolutely massive, cave systems that make me WANT to get lost in them and find an Ancient City to see if i can indeed shut up long enough to avoid the Warden lol. The new music just makes it feel more complete, even if i dont usually play with music on either. Most of it is too slow or calm and ill turn it off just because i get mad from it lol

I personally feel that C418's musical style is so ingrained into Minecraft's identity, that bringing in other composers just doesn't make the music fit by principle. It goes the other way too, all of the new tracks by Lena Raine for example feel like they're from Celeste. Also the new music seems to repeat phrases WAY more often than C418's did, so the new music gets old pretty fast. (cough cough Comforting Memories, GOD it got old after like three times.)

I really love the new music, even if their volume is a bit too loud sometimes. I think it's kinda cool that each area has it's own music, as it means that different players have different experiences with the music depending on where they settle. Since my base is in an ocean, I hear the Update Aquatic themes very often, and on the contrary, I rarely hear Crescent Dunes, the desert theme. Though, the themes aren't explicitly "desert" or "jungle" themes like in a Mario game or Terraria, they're more broad than that. Having unique music for the Deep Dark also highlights it's unsettling nature, like how the End and Nether have unique music.

The deep dark track has people screaming in the background and the place I'm at is totally safe, devoid of enemy mobs spawning at all since it's been cleared out. The original music is lonely, in a good way... it fits a game where you find yourself all alone in a big empty world. Especially before the villagers were added; it was just you and the endless landscape (and some cows and chickens) and the music was soft and distant and a little eerie like the wind blowing through the trees and over the empty fields

for me, possibly since i've only just in the most recent version beaten the game, i like some of the new music more. there are some tracks from alhpa and beta that are extremely nostalgic for me, but the new music that i picked up on while playing wasn't for feeling out of place or different, but because i really liked it and didn't remember it being there before. my current favorite music disc is also one of the newer ones (not pigstep tho i do like that one), and it was the more recent additions that got me to actually go and listen to the soundtrack outside of the game for the first time. one last note, using otherside for the end of the vid made me grin, since i think it's my favorite minecraft music right now
