there are guides online that get you to run it under the unix subsystem, but I wanted to run it the 'proper' way as a batch job, and then you end up yak shaving all the way down to patching eg the included Java.

This is very interesting. Now I have another idea: getting MVS TK4 into Minecraft. It sounds silly, but there are actually two mods that let you build computers in minecraft, and offer you a LUA console. So, one could install Hercules besides Minecraft on a server. Then, there could be a Minecraft mod that connects to Hercules and offers a terminal, DASDs and so on. Possibilites could be endless from there on.

But can it run Crysis? And more seriously, I regularly use Linux both as desktop and over ssh, and it's really interesting for me to see a different environment such as mainframes :) This interface reminds me of using Norton Commander (I used it as a kid, on my first computer with DOS and Windows 3.1). Of course there are Linux commands such as htop or nano that look like that too
