basically prices were so low that many went bankrupt and lost their farms also combined with absolute terrible weather at the time

Along with bankruptcy, due to overfarming from the amount of resources needed for wars, a lot of areas were no longer able to produce crops so healthy dirt was very important

Did you know that vanilla minecraft has a built-in skyblock map? If you go into superflat presets, one of the options is called void world, and it spawns you on a 11x11 stone platform with nothing else (besides a bonus chest if you selected it in worldgen, but it won't be that useful). Now, while you can't get to the nether or end (Ignoring chunk regeneration glitches), you can progress very far. Spiders drop string that can be crafted into wool, so you can bridge as far as you want, and foxes (which can spawn, as biomes still exist even if they aren't visible outside of F3) have a low chance of spawning with a held emerald, which they can drop. Wandering traders can sell saplings as well as podzol, which for all intents and purposes, are grass blocks. From there you can do just about anything, as witches can throw weakness potions that function for the zombie villager curing process, gold can be obtained from smelting golden tools/armor from zombies, and apples come from tree leaves. Now you have access to villager trading, which can give you anything from enchanted diamond equipment to weakness/health arrows for easier curing, to redstone and lapis, and even water can be obtained through rain collecting in cauldrons.
