In 1948 4501 was retired and sold off to the Kentucky & Tennessee Railway. It was a short line that operated coal and lumber for the Stearns coal and lumber company based out of Stearns Kentucky. 4501 was renumbered to K&T 12 it would serve the line until 1964 when the K&T dieselized. Fun fact the K&T is now the Big South Fork Scenic Railroad.
