I was 8 years old when you introduced me to Minecraft and computer games. It is now 14 years later and I am now a software engineer and still play Minecraft to this day. I remember watching your 1.0 Survive & Thrive series around 2014 or 2015, before i had minecraft. watched this and read the minecraft wiki religiously. sometimes i go back and rewatch that series for the memories. thanks for teaching me how to play!

If you place crops in alternating rows instead of in a single block they grow faster. You can also create a marker on maps by placing a map in an item frame (locator map in item frame or by using a banner in bedrock). Good start to the series though, have already recomended it to people.

FYI paul - i'm not sure if this is what you meant around 13:50, but you can mark locations on a map if you place down a banner and right click it with the map! it'll leave a marker where you're standing (and if you name the banner then the marker will even have a label) by the way, i'm really glad to see this series come back! i must have been 6 or 7 when i first started watching your minecraft series, and they're what made me really love video games :)

3:00 So for those interested in the mechanics of the game, and why paul earlier mentions the sunlight, it actually has nothing in particular to do wirh sun light. Tilled dirt is effected by two things. Light level, which can be changed via any light source, and water. Regular tilled dirt will grow crops over time, but i believe its slower. (Someone correct me if im wrong.) So that means you need to put it next to water. Water makes the soil fertile and so the seeds or whatever you plant grows faster. And thise sre the two things that effect growth speed naturally. You can speed up the process by using bonemeal, which is made from bones. It basically acts like fertilizer in real life, except it rather quickly accelerates the growth of the crops. So you really only need two things to have an effective farm. Sunlight or light in general, and water. After that you're golden. Now if you want an efficent farm you can try some redstonery, but that's something for snother day.

2:00 It's actually not how it's always worked! But I don't blame you for not remembering, it was quite some time ago, but way back in the beta days, you used to have to hoe the ground to get a seed. Tall grass and grass weren't even in the game yet. All you had was the grass block. And that's what you tilled to get the seeds. Kinda made farming awakard because well, it totally ruined the nearby land for a short while, until the grass grew back. 😂 But that's how we used to do it, way back when. :)

Funny you mention modding...I always wanted to throw you into one of those themed modpacks blind. Those change so much about the progression, even about how to survive the first night, that it would be a blast seeing you (THE Minecraft teacher) figuring it out. Something like GTNH, Forever Stranded, Skyfactory, or ME^3, to name some that have good ingame guidance so one can figure it out without learning how the mods that are in there work first.
