FOR ANYONE WHO DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THE MECHANICS OF THIS BUILD AND WHY IT WORKS, I will attempt to simplify this: Comparators put out a redstone signal charge at a level proportional to how full the hopper is. This means if the hopper is full, the comparator attached to it in this fashion puts out a charge of 15(full charge) (it can travel across 15 blocks before the signal stops) If the hopper is empty, the comparator attached to it puts out a charge of 0 (no charge) . If the hopper is about half full, it will put out a charge of 7 or 8 (half charge). Now let's take a ratio of how full the hoppers are when filled up as he filled them (1 full stack of the item desired, 1 stone in each other slot) 64 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 68 maximum hopper capacity is 64 x 5 = 320 68/320 = .2125 Now to find how much redstone signal this will send out, we take the ratio and multiply it by the total signal strength possible: .2125 x 15 = 3.1875 This means that the signal can reach up to 3 blocks away. If you notice after he puts the items in the hopper, they all go down to 41 before they stop. The reason for this is understandable if we do the same process above to calculate the signal strength ratio provided at 41 items. 41 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 45 45/360 = .140625 .140625 x 15 = 2.109375 This means the signal can reach up to 2 blocks away. If you go back to watch how he designs the first section, he connects a repeater to a block with a redstone torch. This means if the repeater starts to receive a signal, the redstone torch will be turned off. While the redstone torch is on, the hopper it is next to becomes LOCKED. A locked hopper cannot drop or receive items. The connection to the receiver is 3 blocks away from the comparator. So logically, when the comparator starts putting out a signal strength of 3 or more (more items inside it), the repeater goes on, the redstone torch goes off, and the hoppers become unlocked. (the flow of items downwards to the chests continues) And once the top hopper goes down to a signal strength of 2, the repeater goes off, the redstone torch goes on, and the hoppers become locked again, keeping your items from dropping through. This is why also just having 11 of each item in the other 4 slots and 1 of the item you want sorted into your hopper works as well, because it will go down to 45 total before switching off. Hopefully this clarifies things for those confused instead of making it more confusing. Happy crafting :)

Most of this is correct except the formula for calculating the output is incorrect. It is also important to know that changing it to have one of your filter item and 11 of each "junk" item in the other four slots will break the "overflow protection" part of this design. The correct formula for the signal strength if there is anything in the hopper is: floor(1+([# of items]/320)*14). So when the hopper has exactly 45 items, the signal strength is: floor(1+(45/320)*14) -> floor(1+ (0.140625*14)) -> floor(1+1.96875) -> floor(2.96875) -> 2 So a signal strength of 2 will power the Redstone up to two blocks away which isn't enough to unlock the hopper below it. As soon as item #46 is added, that ending calculation becomes: floor(3.0125) -> 3. When the Redstone reaches three blocks away, the hopper below it becomes unlocked and starts pulling items until the number of items drops down to 45 again. So for this part to work, any combination of exactly 45 items will work as a filter as long as you have at least one of the item you're filtering for in the first slot and at least one "junk" item in the other four slots. So 41/1/1/1/1 works as a filter and so does 1/11/11/11/11. There are lots of ways to combine this and the system will still work as an item filter. So that brings us to the "overflow protection" part. Overflow could happen if you get so much of one item that it fills the chest and both hoppers above it. The original design for the filter hopper (41/1/1/1/1) limits the total items to 68. You could end up with 64 of your filter item but the other four slots will always have exactly 4 items. So the most you can ever have in the "filter" hopper is 64+4 = 68. With 68 items, the signal strength calculation comes to: floor(1+(68/320)*14) -> floor(3.975) -> 3. So the filter hopper will never cause the comparator to output a signal strength greater than 3. If you change the breakdown in the hopper to 1/11/11/11/11, you still have exactly 45 items to start but in a backed up system you can get a lot more items into that filter hopper. You could end up with 64 of the item you're filtering for and 44 of your "junk" items. With that much in the filter hopper, you end up with a signal strength calculation of floor(5.725) -> 5. So the Redstone signal will not only unlock the hopper below the filter, the signal will start reaching the adjacent hoppers, unlocking them as well. All it takes is a signal strength of 4 to unlock adjacent hoppers and wreck the system. The threshold for a signal strength of 4 is when there are 69 items in the filter hopper. That is why the original design that limits the items to no more than 68 is so important. All of this also assumes that all items are stackable to 64, the math is is different if you have items that stack to 16. Non-stackable items cannot be used in this system at all.
@LordAzrael21
@LordAzrael21 2 жыл бұрын
Great explanation! Small correction: Locked hoppers can't PULL items from containers above them, but they can receive items (such as from other hoppers pointing into them) - which is why it is important that the hopper next to the comparator doesn't point down into the locked hopper, or it would still push items through.

@@impulseSV I did this with dead bushes in PE version. Caught a few "bugs". 1. You cant drag items across hoppers so you have to get 5 different named objects, put them in and take the first one out 2. I don't know if it's the bushes or something else but sometimes the system doesn't sort fast enough and some sortable blocks end up in the overflow chest.

@@vivafeverfifa2524 I had this problem too, the problem for me was that it was using a double chest for input, and it was taking 2 items at a time, causing half of it to end up in the overflow chest. easy fix is to use a single chest as input. @Broso56
@Broso56 3 жыл бұрын
You probably understand redstone more now, but im giving you a breakdown anyway cuz im bored. Components used in item sorter: Comparator: Comparators take the signal from anything that is a storage. This can be Hoppers, Chests, Barrels, i mean even dispensers. The signal Strength (how far the redstone signal goes from the comparator) is based on how many items are in said storage. 1 item will power it 1 block, then it takes more and more for it to increase. Repeater: Redstone Repeaters take a redstone signal of any kind (from comparators, or from levers, or whatever it doesnt matter) And boosts it to the maximum strength, or in other words, allows a 17 long redstone dust line to be powered (or 16 i dont remember) Redstone torch: Redstone torches are used to invert a signal. What this means is a redstone torch will provide power to any blocks in front of said torch, until its powered by a different source, then it will turn off. And redstone dust. I would imagine you know what this does, but if you dont it just allows power to go through it, think of like a wire in real life or something. Notes: Blocks can be powered by a source, and when they are, provide power to anything against said block. Powered blocks cant power other blocks, only components like redstone dust and what not. Does not refresh signal. Also, some blocks cant be powered. Hoppers will stop moving items from/into storage if it is powered. This is also known as hopper locking. How it works: Lets start from the input chest, the input chest rests above a hopper and when you put items in the hopper will take the items and move them into other hoppers. (this is the top row of hoppers) Middle row of hoppers have 4 named blocks each and the item you want in the chest below. Ill use diamonds as an example. Talking about the top row again, the hoppers keep putting the chest's items into the other hoppers forward to it, until it gets to the right middle hopper that has the right item you want to sort. Then that middle hopper then takes said item and funnels it down to the bottom chests. thats the middle and bottom row hoppers. When 42 of the right items are in the hopper, it powers the redstone comparator to 3 redstone dust (46 including the 4 filler items, the named items) and gives enough for the redstone to power the block underneath, which powers the redstone repeater, refreshing the signal to be able to power the redstone torch to be off, which then allows the bottom hopper to start funneling items into your chest. Once it goes back to 41 items, redstone torch gets powered back on from the contraption, and the hopper is locked again. I hope I explained this well to you and anyone else who is confused how it works, im mainly just bored though so i just thought i would type it out.

If any of you are coming to this video wondering if its a good Item sorter or not, let me tell you, it is great. Its worked for 6+ years across all versions since video release, its EASILY expandable both to the side, and down, so that you can have each item have several double chests to store it, for common items like cobblestone, or expand to the side to allow for more unique items to be sorted. Its decently compact too, and easy to hide all the redstone. DEFINETLY recommend. 10/10, used this design for years.

@@jasperosterberg7987 this absolutely works. 1) make SURE all of the middle row of hoppers is pointing either at or away from the comparator. otherwise it will break. 2) make sure the top row of hoppers are all pointing sideways 3) make sure the bottom row is pointing down. pointing them sideways opposite the comparator can also work if you put the chests there. 4) make sure the renamed blocks are in the middle row of hoppers, and that there is exactly four total, with one in each slot except the first, which you place your item in. using renamed blocks that stack to 64 at a height of 1 is what makes everything work. 5) make sure there are no unstackable items put into the middle hoppers. they will just go out immediately, because they will compare as 64. items that stack to 16 are okay. 6) make sure that all solid blocks are actually opaque. they need to be able to accept redstone power to power the repeater and the hoppers.

Here's a handy tip for integrating this into larger sorting systems: If you have an item that you want to sort but is rare (eg diamonds) simply place a block in front of that sorter's comparator, then in the filter hopper place two of the item you want to sort and five items that are named and stackable to 16. That's an easy way to convert a single unit of this system to one that only requires two items for the filter (as opposed to forty-something), but doesn't have overflow protection (which is not really needed for rare items such as diamonds).
@Robomandude
@Robomandude 10 жыл бұрын
the comparator checks for total items in the hopper. items that stack to 16 count 4 times and items that take up a full stack count 64 times. You just need to add about 38 named items to make it only keep one of the item to be sorted.

I used this and in item elevator in something I just made and had the idea for a long time. So its a slime block piston door, but to activate it, you need to put a certain item in a chest behind a secret stair in the wall and it goes through an item filter to get rid of anything that's not the item, then sends it off into an elevator into a dropper, activating a comparator which then sends the signal to open the door. After going through, there's a pressure pad that activates the dropper, giving the item back to you. Leaving is a simple pressure plate opening. And the rejected items? They are sent into a different item elevator into a chest so you can keep the rejected items. If someone was stupid, you could get good stuff. I was proud when I finished it. It takes some time to go through all the hoppers, but it reaches it and works. And as your item elevates, it makes a clicking noise, telling you it's the correct item before opening the door. Then again, the other item elevator would make the same sound. Oh well. You'll know once the door opens.

The filter hopper will only start to pass stuff through if there is 45 items in it. So what you need to do is put 4 stacks of 11 in the named item slots (Slots 2, 3, 4, and 5) of the filter hopper, with the item you want to filter in the 1st slot. It will then only keep 1 filter item in that slot and filter everything else above the total 45 count.

A comparator reading a hopper outputs signal strength 3 only for 46 to 68 items (if those are stackable to 64). The point of the design is to never have it output a stronger signal, because that would "bleed" across to adjacent filters and break them.

@brandonmason1403
@brandonmason1403 4 жыл бұрын
I have an idea to prevent this... replace the top layer of chests with a hopper line that dispenses items into a cactus. Due to the bottom-first grabbing nature of hoppers it's your bottom chests that will fill up first. So rather than thinking of some complicated way to detect overflow (e.g. from the redstone signal) why not just use the top layer for this? Since there's no additional redstone circuitry it stacks along with the rest of the design. It's just the addition of 1 hopper per item stack.
