I’ve been wondering why they needed the wolf when they already had the soul of every other mob in the game, including ones that weren’t undead, and I think I figured it out: they needed a mob that could track Player 1, and the wolf was the perfect one for the job due to it’s ability to teleport to it’s master’s location.

For the record, though, I didn't root for the Wither. But I do understand where those creatures were coming from. Global destruction and genocide are extreme reactions I can't sympathize with, but otherwise, the loneliness of the abandoned mobs is relatable. Also, I get the sense they were taking advantage of the wolf's suffering, which compounds the story's tragedy.
