I’ve been getting scam texts to my phone number every 3 days the entire month of September, each text is addressed to a different person with a different email about a different problem (Amazon, Netflix, taxes, Telus, etc etc) but it’s from the SAME number. You think they’d at least space them out a bit more LMAOOOO

The "stolen cat scam" happened to someone in my family. Her bird got lost, we put up flyers around the area. Some dog from literally a few streets over from us texted us and told us that they have found the bird but wanted a reward ($1000 AUD). Bird was actually found by a nice elderly couple a few suburbs away. Also - not really a scam but some old lady stole whole ass plants from the community garden outside of my mum's work... she sold them on FB marketplace -_-

my favourite scam that people keep falling for in my line of work is someone calls and pretends to be from corporate and goes "we need you to take ALL the money out of the safe, ALL the cash out of the store, and use it to buy bitcoin and transfer it to this acct number" and people actually fall for it on a weekly basis. it's mental.

at least once a week we stop someone from being scammed at my work (i work retail), 2 weeks ago it was a woman in her early 20s who was being scammed, she had just started a new job and the email came from her “boss”. it’s pretty awful how often people get scammed

A lot of the victims of the gift card scam callers are seniors who just don't know better. I work in retail and we have to tell every customer who buys Amazon and pre paid visa cards about the scams and explain that the government wouldn't want you to pay them with Amazon cards. One of our cashiers forgot to tell this old man about the scams and his daughter came to the store a few days later and said he got scammed for $2500. It's sad that people fall for this

I did get a couple of scam messages on Facebook when I did have it. One saying that I won a lot of money and my Facebook friend (my aunt) had collected hers already so now I need to then send them money to deliver it. The other one was from my grandads account. He messaged me with a link (can’t remember what it was) but my grandparents were visiting us at the time. My grandad realised he left his phone at home and grandma couldn’t remember their Facebook password (they have a joint Facebook account) so can’t go on at the moment to check messages. I got a message from “grandad” while I was talking to them

Not a computer scam but worth mentioning . Quite a few years ago while I was working at a cheap and cheerful clothes shop and a customer came in complaining about a pair of jogging bottoms and said they wanted a refund and claimed they cost £14.99 . Little did they know I sold them the item at £6.99 just 2 days before , maybe they didn't realize because between the sale and them returning I'd had a haircut , new glasses and the staff had been issued new uniforms . When I said I'll have to talk to my manager about refunds they left the jogging bottoms on the counter and ran full speed down the road .

The reason why alot of them are so poorly worded is that they want to weed out anyone with even the tiniest amount of intelligence, most scams require more than one step and they don't want to waste their time with some one who realise what's happening at the last minute. Most of the time scams only work on people who are not just stupid but also shockingly greedy, I only really have any sympathy when it's someone who was just so desperate that they brought into it out of wishful thinking.

Hmm I just checked the offical website and it is indeed a discount, not a cash payment this time but the difference is "You do not need to apply for the discount, and there’s no need to contact your energy supplier." whereas the scam text was asking me to apply for the discount!!
