Restaurants and bars often had these near the entrance, out of sight from employees. Kids would get their start using those machines. It's a great addition to the arcade, it really was a part of the era.

I was going to say a similar thing. Various dive bars, usually in "depressed" areas, still have various models that do still vend packs. I have also seen packs and pouches of loose tobacco in the more common screw type vending machines.

@@LGRBlerbs There's divebars here in the South that still have them. "You can't just go around vending cigarettes anymore" is MOSTLY true. Cigarette Vending machines are illegal with the *exception* of facilities that restrict entry to minors, for example, a bar or strip club.

These were in Waffle Houses and pool halls till the state passed the no smoking indoors law when I was an early teen or preteen. I can't remember how old I was. They tried repurposing these to dispense other items but after a year they disappeared totally.

I remember going to this restaurant when I was a little kid that had a cigarette vending machine by the door. Kind of crazy to think that used to be a thing. e: like Clint I'm a non-smoker. In fact I've never smoked a cigarette in my life, but my dad and a lot of his family did. I've always liked the logos and iconography associated with Marlboro, Winston, Camel, etc. Especially growing up in the south with it all over the place in NASCAR.

Back in 1993 in my 3rd grade class we were going on a field trip to Seattle to see the science museum. We had to take the ferry and during that trip the ferry still had that exact vending machine on the main deck. My friend who had a nack for trouble actually bought a pack from that machine and we tried to smoke but no one had a lighter and the match stick vending was empty.

As a 16-year-old, I got to visit California on a language program. Of course, being the nineties, we smoked-it was actually legal in my Scandinavian neck of the woods for some reason. Getting cigarettes proved to be a challenge, though, until we discovered cigarette machines. Those machines didn’t card anybody!

7:29 Clint, I had the same problem with one of their arcade machines. I backed the Dragon's Lair kickstarter and when I got my cabinet it had multiple black paint flakes under the screen. Oh, and the game had several video issues. Kinda worrying considering the price tag on these things.

A bonus for school trips from the UK in the 80s was that those were one of the vending machines which would accept UK 5 pence coins in place of the intended 1 Deutsche Mark which was worth rather more. Another notable one was condom machines.

I miss the motion clocks for various Beer and Soda companies. They were art and advertising usually having various lights a motor to make the pattern or light to change to get people to really notice them. Very nostalgic stuff you post. I enjoy your hobby.

The bar my dad ran used to have one of these next to a couple of old-school candy machines, back when you could actually use a handful of change to buy a pack of cigarettes. I think my dad bought one or two packs from it to show me how it worked. I don’t touch cigarettes, but seeing this brings me back to being a 5-year-old, hanging out at the bar where my dad worked.

I remember these from the 70s in Australia. Pubs and clubs would always have them, usually right by the toilets. You would pay in full dollars and if there was any change it was taped directly to the cigarette box. Great for us kids at the time. Mind you, your local shop keeper would sell cigarettes to anyone with money.

From my memories of these things in the entrances to every sit down restaurant in the country in the 80s, the scratches add more realism to it. If anything, it needs a lot more. And the glass needs to be absolutely filthy.

As a Canadian former smoker I'd love a full size vending machine some day with replica packs I can load modern cigarettes in. I'd take up smoking again just from the coolness factor alone. This looks awesome. I WANT ONE :D Edit: Modern Canadian smokes have garbage packaging with warnings and dead lungs. These machines and visiting cousins in Murica always blew my mind seeing these in small town Ohio in the early 2000s

Very ‘Cool’ video. I remember these machines from Perkins back in the day. Always wanted to get some at 12 years old. No smokers in the family, just looked neat. Can see why marketing changed and they don’t exist anymore. They were near the prize “well” that I tried to get as many different items from as possible. Always hoped for a fresh fill. Remember always ordering the “Little Shaver”. Speaking of ‘Cool’s, my German teacher in 10/11 grade back in 1996-98 used to tell us how he smoked Cools for a week in 10th grade. Also how he used to keep a bottle of Schnapps in his desk drawer back when you could. Really great teacher. 😢

Memories! I used to buy cigarettes for my grandpa out of those machines, not a lot of times, but I remember the machines were cool. He had black lung from working as a breaker boy, smoked all his life, and it wasn't what killed him, so I guess he won the smoking lottery.

The locally-owned supermarket had a '60s-era Camel poster at one of the checkout counters for so long, I'd bet it was still there by the time we moved in '08.

i know they aren't terribly legal anymore, but the old promotional cigarette ads and props in corner stores are super nostalgic to me. i remember a specific Kool one from the corner store my grandma used to go to for her lottery and cartons. It had a rotating light in it to make it look like it had a flowing waterfall.

I have a weird nostalgia for cigarette memorabilia. I dont miss the days of cigarette smoking being commonplace, but the aesthetic of it was so prevalent in my childhood. The ads being everywhere, machines in stores and restaurants, race cars in Marlborough liveries. I've never been a smoker, but I want this.

This knockoff branding is still pretty nostalgic even though I never have smoked. My dad smoked Kool and my mom smoked Viceroy cigarettes. I often was sent to the vending machine at Holiday Lanes bowling alley in my hometown back in the 70s to drop those coins and pull that handle. Kachunk!..shhhhiiip...plunk. It was usually to earn a dime or quarter to play a pinball or arcade game.
