Wall-of-Text so BLUF: BP makes an inexpensive and fun day at the range and is great for first timers so they remember a good experience and come back for more. @@taofledermausThat's exactly why I got an 1858 Remington reproduction. Proof loads are no joke (my old man loaded one in the cylinder like I showed him when we test fired remotely, oops) and even full power loads are a handful for someone inexperienced in BP revolvers. But tame it down to ~33-40% and it's great for kids or those relatively new to the "sport" so long as they have the hand strength. I love taking someone new and plinking with a .22 revolver, moving to .22 "fully semi-automatic," having some fun with clouds of smoke and then moving on another day with slightly more modern handguns and rifles. Making that first day so much fun and comfortable about safety that they're pestering me to schedule the next one is a good feeling that I've done something right. Now the second day when they pick up a subcompact 9mm because it's smaller, then grin when they try a full sized finding how much easier and finally giggle uncontrollably at the first shot from a scary black rifle and I get to say something about the scales falling off their eyes and seeing why this is better for someone weaker or with limited mobility, now we have one more in the fold.

I used to watch guys shoot Silhouette with (usually) Contenders, they'd shoot from the Creedmore position. .30-30 was a popular chambering for that game back then, not sure if it still is. I could barely shoot a rifle chambered in .30-30 at 12, so imagine my wonder at seeing guys shooting handguns in the same chambering.
@Mopartoolman3 ай бұрын
Yeah, they were popular years ago, but I don't keep up with silhouette shooting any more either. In .30-30, the recoil is not too bad, but in .45-70 it can be brutal! The first loads I shot in it were light handloads for my original Sharps, and they weren't too bad, but then I shot some factory 300 gr. Winchesters that I shoot in my Marlin 1895, and they peeled the skin right off of my finger just like Jeff's injury, except it was one joint closer to the tip of my finger. The frame is rounded off in that area, but it was still too much for these 65 yr. old hands!!!! I have not shot the .45-70 since, and I am looking to trade that barrel for something else, maybe even one in .30-30........ I got mine a few years ago in a trade, and was just going shoot it for fun, since I already reloaded both chamberings. The .223 chambering IS fun, and more accurate than my AR, but the .45-70 is no fun at all!!! I think this shotgun might be interesting, but I would stick to black powder myself.@@flynbenny
@glenngray31193 ай бұрын
@@Mopartoolman I have had several people say that and I do not understand why I do not experience that with large caliber weapons. I do not have my TC Contender in 45-70 anymore as someone offered me a price I could not refuse. I would routinely shoot max loads in it and did not experience a great deal of discomfort, however it was the only barrel I had for the gun and it was a 16 inch barrel. I have wondered if shooting left handed has anything to do with it. I have a 510 Nitro Express made on a Nr. 3 Ruger action that I load 570 grain DGX with 96 grains 4350 and after about 5 shots it does get a bit uncomfortable. I hunted ducks with a 10 gauge Ithaca and I knew to never lay down with the gun to my shoulder and fire it. I do not understand why I am not more affected by recoil I weigh around 200 pounds and that is not enough to make a big difference. Anyone have any ideas about it.

Had a fisherman neighbor in the Caribbean with an ancient but functional 2 gauge shotgun hung up in his little rum shop home bar. 2 gauge. Atheneal was in his mid 60's and actually used this handheld blunderbuss hunting every year. Looked like the "Squidbillies" gun. The 2 gauge had a robust ring under the end of the barrel for a rope that tied it off to the front of his boat. Had to be taut to fire safely and not send one out of the boat and into the hospital. Ammo for it was hard to come by these days and he had to load his own. He'd found a good fit with these old French anti-aircraft shells. He hunted whales.

AWESOME!!! I've asked about you scoring one a couple of times a few years back so I'm thrilled to see you adding it to your inventory!!! DO NOT use smokeless - ie/modern - powder in a muzzle loader as you can easily overpressure the firearm and have a catastrophic failure - stick to black powder, Pyrotex and/or other black powder substitutes. Read up on the difference between FG, FFG, FFFG and FFFFG - 4f is super fine and should only be used in the flashpans of flintlocks, 3F is very fine and normally only for pistols - you should probably be using 1 or 2F for this shotgun - I don't own one...yet...so I can only say PLEASE do some hard research as while I'm sure you miss Danny, I'm equally sure you're willing to wait to see him again. I am really excited to see this though as you're likely going to be quickly spoiled once you find how easy it is to adjust powder loads as you film, never mind putting an end to the hassle of constructing, loading and crimping all sorts of crazy combinations to make things fit inside a shell - just pour in a charge of powder and then start stuffing stuff into the barrel. If the smoke becomes a problem, score an electric fan and rig it to a car battery so that it can blow the smoke off to the side almost immediately after the gun is fired so your view of the slug isn't obscured. Again, very excited - can't wait for more videos using this awesome gun!

@RequisiteFunction3 ай бұрын
Depends what your plans are. There's a reason why no manufacturer ever offered a shotgun this short during the blackpowder era, whrn they were more than capable of having done so. It's because blackpowder needs a certain length of barrel to burn and create the pressure. A shot charge this wide needs a longer barrel. That's why every other short blackpowder shotgun has at least a 10" barrel. Putting more powder in it just wastes powder, as the powder would have been pushed out of the barrel before it was finished igniting. Long story short, the replicas at Taylor's are going to be more powerful, even though they're only 20g.

Those saboted slugs will go through everything ( still have to use 2 nitro cards over powder and one over the slug to get the powder to burn. Also use the primers recommended by black horn powder. Excited to see the longer video, I have been debating on buying one of these Pistols. Hoping you try a variety of payloads(birdshot/buck/slugs)
That was awesome, love the sonic boom ring of fire 🔥 💣 🔥 Like to see some double 00buck run through it 😮

I have found the AR furniture replacement is the way to go folding stock addition, perfect balance to get the most use out of the maximum powder charge.

There was a Browning over & under for a while there, and the selector was on the trigger itself. We had it turkey hunting. Turns out, if you bump the selector with a glove, and it's in the middle, it'll trigger both barrels at once. A double shot from 3" High-Brass turkey loads was enough to tip me over backwards like a cartoon character, since I was like 14 at the time.

My Grandmother had a saw off double barrel 12 gauge just like this in the top drawer off her dresser. But wasn't a black powder gun. She kept it loaded. And she wasn't at all afraid to use it.

Hey Jeff, in regards to the difficulty of shooting over the shoulder, and having both the shooter and the target in focus, there is a solution. Actually, there's two solutions, but I'll tell you the better one first. If you get a tilt/shift lens adapter, you can tilt the lens and get a diagonal field of focus. If you set the camera up just right, maybe from a three-quarters perspective or shallower, you could potentially get the whole path of the projectile in focus. The other solution is a split-focus diopter, basically it's half of a magnifying glass that screws into the filter thread mount on your camera lens. So you'd screw it in so it's vertical or diagonal, focus the uncovered side on the target, and frame the "launch technician" on the magnified side. The main issue would be that there'd be a line across the frame from the cut glass. (edit: just to clarify, when I said diagonal field of focus, I don't mean corner to corner, I mean pivoting on the z axis, like a door or window being halfway open, with it closed being your normal "flat" focus)

The HS camera has a very shallow depth of focus. I'm using an F-stop as high as 1.2 depending on the light and framerate. The best way is to position the camera about 12 meters behind the closest object and set the focus for infinity, but often the quality of the imagery suffers.

@@taofledermaus With a tilt/shift lens attachment, you can tilt that whole plane of focus, so your focus is flat along the trajectory, while you are at an angle. Meaning the focus will be closer on one side, and further on the other. Also, with a split-focus diopter, it doesn't matter if you are focused at infinity, so long as the power of the diopter is enough to keep your near field subject in focus.

The wisdom of our great Uncle Sam. Since this piece is a muzzle loader, perfectly legal. If it fired standard 12gu ammo, then Uncle Sam is lookin' to put you in a cage. All gun laws are infringements. Great shootin' Jeff.
