Testing an ultra small 12 v air conditioner for our van
I am not endorsing this unit. I am still in the process of testing. I also paid full price for the unit.
According to Calculator.net I will need about 4,000 BTU to cool my van, this unit is only 1,500
www.calculator.net/btu-calcul...
I installed this unit in our 2021 Promaster and was not satisfied with the results. It has since been removed.
See my channel for further videos on the failure.
I think this unit would work great for things like dog kennels. Or other very small spaces.

I am impressed by this unit and the test results you provided. Thank you. A 25 F delta T is great. I am getting a tear drop trailer and plan to install one of these units for A/C. It should provide adequate cooling for a tear drop and will easily make it through the night with a 100 Ah lithium battery.

The two white wires are joined for on. And the blue box should be a potentiometer to adjust the frequency speed of the compressor to adjust cooling / power draw Some 60v panels and 300ah with victon blue solar it would be pretty efficient for small areas like just the bed area with a blanket hanging up.

That's my thought, I just care about comfortable sleeping, if I'm going to travel in overly hot climate, I won't be sitting in my van all day, or really ANY of the day. But sleeping is another thing. Either something like this, or I've considered tearing down a compressor 12v fridge and vent it into just a small enclosed sleeping area. At around 30 watts/12v, those little fridges would cool the tiny amount of square feet, so long as a higher duty cycle, maybe approaching 75% wouldn't burn it out. And I can easily run it all night on my 200ah LifePo4 battery. I also thought about a handful of those 12v peltier devices facing downward into a sleeping compartment closed off with insulated blankets or even insulation board, at a minimum, lowering the ceiling in the sleep area to minimize the square footage needing to be cooled. I can make any housing or fan shrouds with my 3D printers so would need to capture condensation in some pan underneath to let out a drip line and run a 12v to push air past the cold side in the sleeping "cocoon" and also on the outside to remove the hot side air for better performance. You can buy them dirt cheap at around $3 for a bare unit so one day will just order a half dozen and play around with them. Hoping that if 1 can cool down a tiny thermoelectric chiller 30-40F from room temp, that 6 of them can drop a sleeping space down to some comfortable, low humidity level. On the flipside, just tenting up that way one night caught outside Yellowstone around 34F outside at night I was able to sleep just fine, with in van hitting about 40 and under my bed "fort" tunnel it was in the 50s.

You can boost the coldness off the unit a couple of ways: 1) put two of these units in series or parallel 2) you you have the radiator going to the outside, put a piece of dry ice near the cooling fan but be careful not to let it touch any tubing, wrap in in a cloth rag 3) on the input hole on the top, make that go through an box that has regular ice so the input air is being cooled at the first stage

@@ToBeCreated Look into those super ultra white paints that Purdue Univ. created. When we can get these into commercial production there will be NO heat put in a van from the outside, since they allow surface temp to be BELOW ambient air temp by reflecting off ALL radiated/infrared heat. I'm waiting on a guy on KZbin that is going to put up a video on how to make the paint yourself using off the shelf stuff. He already has a video up of making it successfully, but of course from off the shelf will be much simpler. I'm also gearing up to paint my E and W facing gable ends of my house in Florida which should make a noticeable dent in cooling costs. Tempted to write everyone in Congress (for what little it will really do...) and ask that the gov't subsidize the production of this paint as part of a national initiative to reduce cooling costs nationally, which then helps out the power grid, and if we did it enough, could make a dent in global warming.

Just cut a 3” hole covered with a grill for inlet air and one for outlet air and cover them with a stainless steel grill (get them from a boating store). Install a computer fan on the interior for one of the holes for airflow or both holes for a higher flow rate.

If it’s a typical un-insulated cargo you are going to have to put a standard 13,500btu rooftop unit on top of it. Same one as are in many rv’s. They pull 10-12amps on 120v. Prob too much for whatever mobile solar configuration your wanting to use. If it was HEAVILY insulated, and I stress heavily you might could run a small 5000btu window unit (400w or 3ish amps) in it and get it fairly cool. But here in Texas it would be tough. It’s hard to beat the laws of science.

I've had this for 4 years now. I can't break it! It's textbook simple in design and very rugged. I do protect the condenser coils though. I modified mine such that I had to replace the Freon and oil. Freon and oil capacities are a 'lil hard to maintain -- if you ever need to. The manual mentions 55 grams of freon and oil -- combined -- it seems. So exactly how much of which? I had too much oil recently and too much freon as well. That was causing a "Motor Block" error (2 red blinks) and high amp draw. A 30 degree temperature delta is very possible. I got a 25 degree temp drop with the original factory setup. I measure ~50 gram Freon loads by putting the freon can on a postal scale. Get a $150 vacuum pump with gauges. Note any external blower airspeed booster raises the output air temp. I lose 10 degrees of coolness when boosting the airspeed from the factory speed -- to 20mph -- through a 3 foot insulated hose. *Rigid's new retail portable DC AirCons are twice as powerful* .

@@ToBeCreated Right on! Thanks for that update. Interested to see how this works for you. We may do the same thing in our ProMaster if it works. :) Great find!

@@ToBeCreated Ok great. Thanks for the update, I'm very interested in this for our build seems better priced than many of the crazy expensive options. Knowing what you know now that you have it in your hands would you recommend or not? (I do have electronics backgrounds so extending wires is not a 'no' for me)

Your video is terrible. What is needed is what is the input temperature and what is the output temperature, anything else is unnecessary. You need to let the unit run in a vehicle interior with the inlet vented outside and the outlet inside. Where does the water condensed by the evaporator go? Your video leaves more questions unanswered than answered. It was a waist of time to watch it.

god I can't stand it when random people try to make scientific measurements like this. Why are you using an infrared thermometer. You need a psychometer to measure evaporator TD
