So I'm not a mini 14 expert, I've been watching your videos to learn about them. I have a little experience with 556. Ruger lists the rifling as 1:9" RH, which is faster than bolt action varmint guns, but not as fast as an M4 or MK18. As a result, it's going to stabilize the middle range of 223/556 ammo best. Any 223/556 that isn't subsonic will stop a person inside 50 yards, with a 16 inch barrel your slowest loads are still over 2500 fps, and the faster stuff is up near the 3000 fps range. Keep in mind that these are wild generalizations. XM193 was mentioned in other comments, it's cheap, made to be durable with a heavy crimp on the bullet and primer, and tends to fragment at close range. 35-55 grain varmint loads are designed to dump as much energy as possible into a small animal target, and tend to disintegrate both themselves and the small animal, and they tend not to penetrate barriers well. I would be worried about stability with anything too light. Nosler Varmageddon is a 223 load, but it's available in a 55 gr load, and i would trust it to break up pretty well with just two layers of drywall, it's not safe to be in the next room, but it's safer than most other options. There's a video idea for you! How many layers of drywall does it take to stop various 223/556? Hornady Frontier is available in a 55gr 556 load, is much cheaper, but I don't know how well it fragments in drywall at close range, I've never tested it. Best of luck, let us know what you find out or decide on.

There are reports from SOF/Special Forces units in the maritime regions that used MK255 RRLP (Reduced Ricochet 62 grain Frangible ammo) in their MK18s/CQBRs aboard ships. Apparently, with its almost non-existent recoil and that particular frangible round. It stops non-armored threats very quickly. Super weird, but heard it from Tier 1 and Tier 2 retired operators.

The only beef I'd have with using a Mini-14 for home defense is it's hard to mount a flashlight on it. Flashlights are invaluable for identifying targets and possibly blinding them. Red dots can also be troublesome (though hardly impossible) to mount. Some types of .223 ammunition work very well indoors. Magazines are stupidly expensive and the cheap knockoff mags work horribly.

Believe it or not Luke, the standard 55 gr. ball labeled the xm193 is a fragmenting round because it yaws and flies apart on impact. It does not have a penetrating core like the 62 gr. m855 does. It is also a fairly good hunting rd. as long as you use it with 16" or longer barrels and keep the range under 200 yds. as it needs velocity to maximize the yaw and fragmenting effect.

5.56 FMJ is not good for for hunting? Tell that to the 4 deer and approx 20 raccoons I killed in 2023. M855 and M193 are fine. But M193 doesn't actually fragment as much as the internet would have you think. And M855 fragments more often than the internet would have you believe. But sure, if you want to use SP or HP, go for it. Good bullet designs in proper weights are fantastic.

Hornady Critical Defense .223 FTX in either 55gr or 73gr. Specifically designed for personal defense. Immediate expansion, little to no over penetration. I live in a condo, so if I had to use my Mini 14 for home defense, those would be my choices. My “Fudd Gun” also has a Samson A-TM folder and pic rail. Set up with QD Scout scope, or QD Sig Romeo7, or just plain irons. But my first choice for home defense will always by my CZ D PCR with Winchester 115gr Silvertip HP. New viewer, and now subscriber, but 77 grain tmk bullets break up pretty good too. Garand thumb did an excellent dry wall penetration test. At this point in my life with health problems destroying my career and therefore my budget, I doubt that I'll ever own a Mini-14. I still think this would be a fun firearm to own. I think I once saw some forty-grain .223 rounds. I could see them being good for home defense because they should fall apart quickly and not penetrate too far beyond the attacker.

Well, I may be biased because I hand load all of my own ammo but I would choose to load Ballistic tipped bullets such as Hornady V-Max or Nosler Varmageddon. I have also had very good accuracy with Hornady's soft point bullets. With that said (or typed) I haven't fired those in my Mini 14 which is an old 181 series. I have mostly fired Hornady 55 grain FMJ out of it so I need to test some of my Ballistic tipped bullets in it. I really like my Mini 14 and I honestly prefer the ergonomics of the traditional stock to my AR's. I still have yet to get the Accu-strut but I have done some other mods to tame the brass ejection and I replaced the rear sight with Tech sights and they have been very good. As long as I can hit a 12" steel plate at 120 yard with the Mini 14 I'm happy with it.

55 grain ball ammo is hands down the best choice. Upon impact, the bullet will yaw and the base of the bullet will fragment causing an explosive wound channel. The reason the Army had such poor performance in the middle east is that they switched to a 62 grain armor piercing round. The 62 grain bullet does not yaw and fragment and instead produces a narrow wound channel with minimum tissue damage. I am a big fan of the Mini 14 and have hunted with it for 30 years. Thanks for the video.

Solid copper stuff like Fort Scott and Barnes 5.56/.223 does a lot of tumbling in tissue, and even has a rep for keyholing in a Mini 14. These are long and light(for size) bullets. For target shooting, this would be bad, but if low barrier penetration is the idea, shooting this stuff in the house, and not going through a lot of walls, these would probably be it.

Lord Ripley made that video disappear above your booger picker. A 5.56 round, I do believe, regardless of type will fly thru drywall. Normally for 5.56x45NATO weapons I would recommend IWI 77gr OTM ammo but since the Mini-14 uses 1/9 Barrel Twist the Federal 62gr Fusion Ammo which is basically the civilian version of the FBI HRT 5.56x45 Assaulter Team M4 ammo that they use. The Fusion uses a Bonded Soft point projectile that is pre-programed to MUSHROOM upon hitting Soft Tissue and will NOT OVER Penetrate. I own several AR15 in 5.56 from 11.5 inch to 24 inch barrels plus everything in between. My weapon of choice is a Mid-Length 16 inch HBAR with F Mark front sight flat top upper with a Midwest Free Floating Picatinny Handguard and a Lower Receiver with Aero LKP, LaRue 2 stage Trigger and Mil-Spec Buffer tube with Magpul ALS Stock and Rubber coated MOE pistol grip. Olight Odin Green Laser/Light unit on a Haley Strategic 1913 Off Set mount, XS Sights Mil-Spec Tritium front sight an Troy Battle Rear Sight. @@leverBoyluke The mini-30 is an awesome weapon specially for home defense when loaded with 125gr Ballistic Tip ammo and now that Ruger makes a factory 20 rd magazine it is even better. When I first got the Mini-30 I purchased a few USA Magazines 30rd Mags which were basically AK47 mags that had the Ruger type lockup system on them but then the Brady Bill Assault Weapons Ban was passed and went into effect which made the magazines prices go thru the roof originally the mags were 30-40 dollars per but after the bill was passed 120-150 per mag. I had 6 and someone decided to steal them out of my Jeep during a Match back in 1995 but it took till 2011 when CDNN imported a bunch of South Korean Steel Mags that actually worked GREAT because they were made for the South Korean Police that used the Mini-30 so I purchased bunch of them. Then finally after Bill Ruger Jr. passing Ruger released a 20 round Factory Mag because Bill Ruger did not want Civilians having high Capacity Mags something his father was totally against!

It’s a decent gun. But it costs way too much money today. And then the mags. Ruger should figure out how to make it cheaper and take STANAG mags.

I probably wouldn't buy a new one today. However, when I bought mine years ago, it wasn't too expensive and at the same, AR's were the same or more due to the Obama panic era.
@nicks2581

I wouldn't say way to much money. Most flat top ARs with a quality trigger and cold hammer forged barrel are going to be about the same cost as the mini-14 and then you still need to buy iron sights. The mini-14 comes with a cold hammer forged barrel, an excellent trigger, and irons out of the box. The Ruger mags are costly though.

All this nonsense about the inaccuracy of the Mini-14. I spent the majority of my youth on the One Thousand Yard Range at Ben Avery Shooting Facility behind the entire M1 family of rifles. The Mini-14 along with its predecessors and counterparts is _more_ than capable of precision accuracy. It was my preferred rifle platform (along with the M1A) until it was matched (but not surpassed) by my first AR acquisition. Now before everyone goes bonkers over the M1A name drop. May I remind you [the viewer] that the Camp Perry Matches disagree with your assessment on the accuracy or lack thereof, regarding the M1A. [End of discussion] In fact, people often ask me what is my favorite gun. To which I reply with a quote: _"I've always been asked, 'What is my favorite car?' and I've always said 'The next one.'"_ *~Carroll Shelby* Stay classy my friends.

The Mini-14 is an ok rifle. Its biggest detractors are the accuracy it's capable of and how much the rifle and its proprietary magazines cost. The biggest reason it's still around is because of restricted states. I bought a Mini-14 used in 2009 when I still lived in California, but it was a newer production 580 series that had the fixes from Ruger's retooling. The rifle with a magnified optic never really shot better than 4-5 MOA with FMJs and was still 2-3 with match ammo. The bore was in excellent condition. I bought my first AR15 (an early PSA with FN CHF barrel) in 2011 and was pretty surprised what it could do vs the mini. 2-3 MOA with FMJs and about 1 with match ammo. While not terrible, it was not impressive. The gun also hates anything that is not a Ruger magazine, which are a little pricey. That being said the gun has always run like a champ with factory mags and hitting man sized targets out to 300 yards is very doable. I've never taken it out to hunt anything.
