So I'm not a mini 14 expert, I've been watching your videos to learn about them. I have a little experience with 556. Ruger lists the rifling as 1:9" RH, which is faster than bolt action varmint guns, but not as fast as an M4 or MK18. As a result, it's going to stabilize the middle range of 223/556 ammo best. Any 223/556 that isn't subsonic will stop a person inside 50 yards, with a 16 inch barrel your slowest loads are still over 2500 fps, and the faster stuff is up near the 3000 fps range. Keep in mind that these are wild generalizations. XM193 was mentioned in other comments, it's cheap, made to be durable with a heavy crimp on the bullet and primer, and tends to fragment at close range. 35-55 grain varmint loads are designed to dump as much energy as possible into a small animal target, and tend to disintegrate both themselves and the small animal, and they tend not to penetrate barriers well. I would be worried about stability with anything too light. Nosler Varmageddon is a 223 load, but it's available in a 55 gr load, and i would trust it to break up pretty well with just two layers of drywall, it's not safe to be in the next room, but it's safer than most other options. There's a video idea for you! How many layers of drywall does it take to stop various 223/556? Hornady Frontier is available in a 55gr 556 load, is much cheaper, but I don't know how well it fragments in drywall at close range, I've never tested it. Best of luck, let us know what you find out or decide on.

The only beef I'd have with using a Mini-14 for home defense is it's hard to mount a flashlight on it. Flashlights are invaluable for identifying targets and possibly blinding them. Red dots can also be troublesome (though hardly impossible) to mount. Some types of .223 ammunition work very well indoors. Magazines are stupidly expensive and the cheap knockoff mags work horribly.

Believe it or not Luke, the standard 55 gr. ball labeled the xm193 is a fragmenting round because it yaws and flies apart on impact. It does not have a penetrating core like the 62 gr. m855 does. It is also a fairly good hunting rd. as long as you use it with 16" or longer barrels and keep the range under 200 yds. as it needs velocity to maximize the yaw and fragmenting effect.

Well, I may be biased because I hand load all of my own ammo but I would choose to load Ballistic tipped bullets such as Hornady V-Max or Nosler Varmageddon. I have also had very good accuracy with Hornady's soft point bullets. With that said (or typed) I haven't fired those in my Mini 14 which is an old 181 series. I have mostly fired Hornady 55 grain FMJ out of it so I need to test some of my Ballistic tipped bullets in it. I really like my Mini 14 and I honestly prefer the ergonomics of the traditional stock to my AR's. I still have yet to get the Accu-strut but I have done some other mods to tame the brass ejection and I replaced the rear sight with Tech sights and they have been very good. As long as I can hit a 12" steel plate at 120 yard with the Mini 14 I'm happy with it.
@michaelfuller347711 ай бұрын
55 grain ball ammo is hands down the best choice. Upon impact, the bullet will yaw and the base of the bullet will fragment causing an explosive wound channel. The reason the Army had such poor performance in the middle east is that they switched to a 62 grain armor piercing round. The 62 grain bullet does not yaw and fragment and instead produces a narrow wound channel with minimum tissue damage. I am a big fan of the Mini 14 and have hunted with it for 30 years. Thanks for the video.

Solid copper stuff like Fort Scott and Barnes 5.56/.223 does a lot of tumbling in tissue, and even has a rep for keyholing in a Mini 14. These are long and light(for size) bullets. For target shooting, this would be bad, but if low barrier penetration is the idea, shooting this stuff in the house, and not going through a lot of walls, these would probably be it.

All this nonsense about the inaccuracy of the Mini-14. I spent the majority of my youth on the One Thousand Yard Range at Ben Avery Shooting Facility behind the entire M1 family of rifles. The Mini-14 along with its predecessors and counterparts is _more_ than capable of precision accuracy. It was my preferred rifle platform (along with the M1A) until it was matched (but not surpassed) by my first AR acquisition. Now before everyone goes bonkers over the M1A name drop. May I remind you [the viewer] that the Camp Perry Matches disagree with your assessment on the accuracy or lack thereof, regarding the M1A. [End of discussion] In fact, people often ask me what is my favorite gun. To which I reply with a quote: _"I've always been asked, 'What is my favorite car?' and I've always said 'The next one.'"_ *~Carroll Shelby* Stay classy my friends.

The Mini-14 is an ok rifle. Its biggest detractors are the accuracy it's capable of and how much the rifle and its proprietary magazines cost. The biggest reason it's still around is because of restricted states. I bought a Mini-14 used in 2009 when I still lived in California, but it was a newer production 580 series that had the fixes from Ruger's retooling. The rifle with a magnified optic never really shot better than 4-5 MOA with FMJs and was still 2-3 with match ammo. The bore was in excellent condition. I bought my first AR15 (an early PSA with FN CHF barrel) in 2011 and was pretty surprised what it could do vs the mini. 2-3 MOA with FMJs and about 1 with match ammo. While not terrible, it was not impressive. The gun also hates anything that is not a Ruger magazine, which are a little pricey. That being said the gun has always run like a champ with factory mags and hitting man sized targets out to 300 yards is very doable. I've never taken it out to hunt anything.

@leverBoyluke , I've SEEN your shootin with that Mini!!! Yer BEST OFF with a 12 GAUGE!!!..LOL....and I shoot about the same with mine as you!!! I do have one set up exactly like yours though!!! But I can't tell if you got an adjustable gas block or not, let's say other than THAT, I got an exact duplicate of that Mini...AND it's my ONLY 5.56!!!! LOL...And yeah, I don't dig the Fudd thing either, but I've learned to live with the moniker!!!! LOL....Also, you like the folder for it?!? I have one on mine right now, but ain't shot it yet, I seem to remember a vid with you havin one, or am I a dreamer on that??? It's hard to tell if I like that over the original stock...I'm beginning to think I dig the original more....
@leverBoyluke5 күн бұрын
@@williamperry01 HAH! Ill tell you its not an adjustable gas block but a Accu Strut for stabilizing the barrel. Not sure how much good its doing but it has a great look and adds a little weight to the front to tame that light 223 recoil. Your setup sounds awesome!
