There seems to be a bit of a trend where I live in Rochdale where cyclists just toss their empty CO2 canisters to the roadside once used. I cannot seem to go on a ride anymore without passing at least one canister discarded in the gutter. If you can carry the canister on a ride with you, then you can carry an empty canister back home with you!

For the pump: you can pump up the flat tube to see where the hole in the tube is...so that you can check the corresponding spot on the tire for something poking through the tire ... avoiding a second flat more effectively. if you only have 2 cannisters and miss a thorn etc...or get two flats from the same debris and dont detect that thorn/glass/wire shard etc....you are stuck. Pro the cannisters: higher pressures than you can reasonably get with a tiny pump in a realistic time frame, smaller, more compact.... But... mostly Im running tubeless now so Ive gone to the cannisters and a spare tube (only one) but also a plug kit as back up and knock on wood...havent had a problem

Good point about finding the thing which caused the puncture. I did years ago walk a bike with a flat tyre, and the bit of glass stick in the tyre ended up creating hundreds of punctures. I commute only, have a hack bike, and patch tubes. The pump is much better for that process. That said, I have been using puncture resistant tyres for about 4 years, and the only flat I've had in > 10,000km of glass shard covered city streets, occurred on excessively worn tyres. I do also give the inside of the tyre a wipe around with the (gloved) hand to ensure nothing remains sticking through.

I've got both. The CO2 inflator is the first line option; and the mini-pump is there (on a bracket mounted behind a water bottle cage) for days when things go all pear shaped. Does my mini-pump mounted on my frame make may bike and me look less racy? Maybe, but no one looks racy sitting by the roadside with a flat tire they can't inflate.

Robin Seibel I carry both. The mini pump is for pre-inflating the tube, and finding a leak to patch. Once the tube and tire are on the wheel, CO2 to get it to proper riding pressure. 1:15 I have that Topeak aluminium pump. It's a total pain in the butt because of bad design. The handle is an aluminium tube that attaches to the piston shaft by just having a piece of plastic pressed into it. So, if you hold the handle and try to pump, you're pulling that cylinder off the shaft. You have to use an awkward grip so push against the end of the shaft, rather than holding the handle itself. And I've never had the patience to get more than about 45psi from it, which isn't a lot of use for 25mm road tyres.

I was going to ask the same thing. Why not even consider a frame pump? But I think I know why. Back in the day frames were made with round steel tubes of standard widths, and if you didn't have a pump braze-on you'd just use a pump designed to squeeze in between any bike's head tube and seat tube lug. In these days with custom carbon fiber construction and hydroformed aluminum, bike frame members don't have standard dimensions you can count on more or less. Still, if a frame pump fits on your frame, it's the best all-around compromise of speed, capacity and reliability. I've never damaged a tube valve with a pump, even a mini-pump, but if you have butterfingers I'd suggest one that has a screw-in hose, which completely solves that problem.
@mistermoore57845 жыл бұрын

It has a short hose so that I do not put ant stress on the valve stem. The hose also can be used on both presta and Schrader valves. Since our group usually stops for folks who flat, that is helpful. But my mini pump has a pressure gauge built into the connecting tube, which is very nice. This gives me the option of even checking pressure when I inflate with my CO2 cartridge (which is a simple device with no gauge). Both, plus a patch kit, extra tubes, and a valve. Nothing is worse than being stuck on the side of the trail in a sweet kit supporting the flashy bike just to cut a little weight. If anything having extra scores you karma points when you can assist another rider with your extra supplies.

Both, after getting 4 punctures on a ride in the wet I now carry 2 spare tubes, patches, C02 with 2 canisters and a Lezyne mini pump. Overkill maybe but better than calling a cab.

I carry a Topeak Joe Blow pump with me. It is large and heavy but when needed works great. One thing I like about a Velomobile, I carry three tires and tubes. if I get a flat " I have had only one flat in 9000 miles" I change the tire and tube with new and repair the flat once I am home.

I bought a lezyn CO'2 pump kit I tried it and it didn't work out for me. I did like the compact and convenient but it's not for me. I use and carry a Blackburn core slim "I'm not sure if that's the full name of it" mini pump and a Bontrager AIRsupport mini pump with metal woven valve tube and both work very well and last me a long time very easy to carry and they fit in my hip lock pouch with other tools along with a extra tube. I've had other pumps and they either strip or fall apart. Metal on plastic thread's don't last long at all tiny screws holding the valve together don't last long either.

I use C02’s but keep a mini pump for emergency backup. I can never get much pressure in a tire with a mini pump. That said, I don’t get flats very often!

I haven't had a puncture in almost two years (on my road bike), so I only bring one inner tube and a co2 cartridge. On my mtb, I bring both a pump and two co2 cartridges, as I run a tubeless setup.

I have a proper frame pump with a gauge zip locked on top tube and CO2 cartridges and 2 spare tubes in small seat bag.depending on seat bags I'm looking at i can probably put that kit in there.
@chesteryap5 жыл бұрын
I bring both. I had a co2 inflator fail on me. used up 3 tubes and a few co2 (dropped by teammates). Thought the tubes or installation had issues. Inspected the inflator post race. the small o-ring inside the inflator was dislodged thats why co2 just leaked out instead of going in the tubes.
@philipclay39245 жыл бұрын
Another consideration: whether or not your tires have inner tubes or tubeless. When I went tubeless, the rapid inflation rate from CO2 helps get the tire bead properly seated on the rim. It could take a try or two if you loose a lot of pressure and the tire unseats. I tend to take a mini pump along in case I have more than 2 flats on an outing (happened once).

Got a Specialized mini pump that doubles as a CO2 adapter - both options in one package. Really nice to have for large volumen tyres like on a mountain bike; CO2 to get it filled and follow up with a few strokes of manual pump action to adjust the pressure.

Thanks for info. I always take my hand pump. However now I will be taking my new co2 inflator too. Just to have a back up.

FWIW, I’ve had my share of CO2 adapter failures so now I carry two since they’re so small. I also have the same silver aluminum mini pump shown in the video and it has served me well. Leaving on an extended tour in a couple of weeks so I recently bought a larger mini pump from Pro Bike Tool with both Presta and Schroeder connections and an internal gauge.

biggest negative was tubes with removable cores kept getting removed by my mini pump with a screw on tip. I had to get a push-on pump. i take both cartridge & pump, but i may have to add a patch kit because there are more times with double flats lately. too much junk in bike lanes

Same problems here. I'm thinking of taking out the valve and applying a dab of loc-tite to keep from unscrewing my cores.

mini pump! Coming from several-days tour riding and MTB I like to be able to inflate my tyres more than once. So i also put a mini pump on my fairly new road bike next to the bottle cage. Yes, it is hard and time consuming to inflate a road bike tyre to high pressure, but the environmental aspect is more important to me.
@kiowa215 жыл бұрын
I usually take both, if I am less than an hour from home I will use my mini pump. If I am hours from home on a long ride and wish to continue I will use my co2 as its so much easier to get a higher pressure in less time. Plus on a long hot day an empty but rather cold co2 cartridge in your jersey pocket is quite nice!!!
@johnnydoe665 жыл бұрын
I carry both, CO2 first use and a mini pump if I have another puncture. I rarely have punctures, but I have a friend who had 5 in less than 35 miles. We ran out of tubes and I only had a couple of Park Tool Self adhesive patches. I ended up having to ride back, get the truck, and go pick him up. Now we both carry CO2 and a mini pump, plus extra patches.
@officerockstar5 жыл бұрын
I used to carry a mini pump for the reusability but my new bike doesn’t have the clearance at the bottle cage mounts. So, for now I am carrying CO2 and hoping I don’t ever need to use them. I have a floor pump, as well as an air compressor, at home and my mini pump now lives at the office.
@zrsgamboa5 жыл бұрын
FYI: Another con of the CO² cartridge is that it doesn't hold pressure well. I got home after using one for a puncture last Xmas and the following day the tire was deflated (not flat, just very soft), and again just a few months ago. CO² cartridges are convenient for sure, but pump up your tire properly with a track pump asa u get home (must let out all the CO²). PS, I also carry a minipump, as back up.

I have minipump Lezyne HP Drive. Tested at home to pump up 25 mm tire. But I could do with it only 4,5 bar pressure, while minimum 6 bars required for 25 mm tire. If I ride 100 km it would be very difficult get back home on such low pressure...
@michellsmorgcycle41615 жыл бұрын
I carry both a Lezyne mini pump with hose connector, and a little CO2 inflator head and a couple of cartridge (and a mini patch kit). One thing you should have mentioned about using CO2 to re-inflate, though. It is less dense than air, and will leak out faster, so the CO2 inflated tire will go flat again in a day or two. So, whenever you've fixed a flat and reinflated with CO2, you should completely deflate the tire once you get home, and then re-inflate again with a floor pump.
@viffer944 жыл бұрын
I used to have a combo mini pump and CO2 inflator that also took cheapo unthreaded canisters. Worked great, cheap to run and always had a backup pump. I haven’t been able to find a replacement for it so I end up carrying one of each just in case.

Best go with both. Pump to start with then a 16g canister to finish it off once tyre and tube are seated properly.
@BikeItUK5 жыл бұрын
Safer with a pump, if unexperienced in using the CO2 I know many that have messed inflation of the tyre up leaving them not so high and very deflated. Pump for me. All the best and great subject matter thanks again Jon
@tecnociclista53425 жыл бұрын
Problem with mini-pumps is that on some modern tubeless wheels sets (Reynolds, I am looking at you!) it is impossible to seat a tire properly with the pressure you can get out of them. I recently sold an otherwise pretty sweet carbon wheelset because puncturing meant I had to 'hobble' home on a tire that wasn't quite as round as it should have been. That never was a problem with the old-style non-tubeless rims...so much for progress ;)
@lesmerritt79765 жыл бұрын
It's not the pressure that's the problem, it's the volume of the pump when trying to inflate tubless tyres. Anyway IMO tubless tyres are a waste of time and effort on a road bike, no real benefit. Tubulars for racing, clinchers and latex tubes for everything else for me. I don't think tubless are a good idea on tyres less than 28mm.
@tecnociclista53425 жыл бұрын
@@lesmerritt7976 The wheels are tubeless but the tires are not, I am using tubes. And yes, it is the pressure...you need at least 8 bar or so for the beads to seat themselves properly with those rims. With the trackpump I usually pump them up to around 8 and then deflate before I go out riding...there's no way you can get 8 bars into a tire with a mini-pump (at least none I have ever used), no matter how long you pump...
@davidslater66725 жыл бұрын
Since going tubeless, I have moved over to CO2 to be sure the tyre seats onto the rim which would be a tall ask for a minipump

Both, depending on my type of ride and if I'm wearing a kit or backpack. I like the co2 pump that uses a non-threaded cartridge since they are cheaper and it has a cylinder that the cartridge goes into to protect your hand when the CO2 comes out.

I have the Topeak Micro Rocket you’re actually using as an example there, and find another HUGE con to be that it does not possess the capacity to pump to a psi higher than about 45-50, which is obviously insufficient. Is it actually just my pump? Design-wise, slick stylish and pocket friendly. Usefulness however is completely lacking.

Topeak Turbo Morph is my choice. Has a tube instead of attaching directly to the valve... I can use the ground to push against instead of using my hand (the one that's supporting the valve)....it also has a gauge.

One issue I've experienced with using CO2 is that they don't work with fresh glue-on patches. In what seems like backwards thinking, I now take a clean tube (no patches) with me as backup. If I get a flat I install the new tube, inflate with CO2, then switch it out for the patched tube once I get home. I've had bad experiences with both mini pumps and CO2, but just find the CO2 so much quicker. The bast solution I've found to preventing flats is moving to a larger tire size. Since I switched from 23 mm to 25 mm about two years and 10000 kms ago, I have not had a single flat.
