My power steering pump just went on my 03 cooper S ( as of Oct 22 2015) . My local mech. diagnosed and said $1500 for pump and fan assembly. After my wife resuscitated me I steamed to youtube to watch a DIY video on the pump replacement. Saw this vid and learned about the ext warr. My warranty is set to exp this Jan but thanks to this vid, I'm bringing it to the dealer tomorrow for replacement under warranty. Thank you, thank you so much for the 411, having a drink to you right now brother.

Great video. Very clear instructions including the camera work with explanations. I had mine replaced, but a few months later it was intermittent. Really fun when parking. Turns out it was NOT the pump. My battery was weak and not holding a charge so when the engine drops to idle while parking, the voltage is too low to run the pump. Changed battery and no more problems, until the pump was 12 mos old and 3 DAYS!!! Guess how long the warranty is... That's right, one year.

Thanks! I was able to fix the steering pump by watching your video. The hardest part for me was to take the pump out. I also struggled with some of the wire connectors which got stuck behind the pump, and so had to loosen the pump again. I unfortunately had no bridge to use, that will make the job much easier. Thanks again for the effort to share this. 🙏

A good tip, if you have rear parking sensors and they stop working, don't ignore it. For some odd reason the power steering pump cooling fan and the parking sensors share the same fuse. If the power steering pump cooling fan gets jammed and gunked up it blows the fuse. Handy video, thanks!

Great video, took exactly 2 hours to fit. Harder than it looks though. The connectors needed screwdriver prying to release. The hoses needed a lot of firm wiggling and some prying. The hose clip is really hard to expand. There’s a lug that allows a screwdriver to wiggle in and expand. Then thin nose pliers open more. I used a penny washer as a screw driver to fit new hose clip due to space.

Hi Everyone, This is an excellent video. My experiences with replacing the pump on my R53 are worth flagging up for anyone considering this job themselves. What I found is that it is best if the electrical connections (the power and the signal cables) are connected before fitting the pump. The amount of room to fit the power connection especially is very limited and it is vital it is inserted fully, otherwise the pump just won't work. Second, is to connect the hose to the reservoir after installation, with copious amounts of a lubricant such as vaseline. The hose is a tight fit and will not slide unless well lubed. Mine was a new hose by the way. Also, ensure worm drive clips face in a direction that will allow tightening a a later date - to cut off any leaks. Also, talking about leaks, do remember to fit a new O-ring to the high pressure line connection. Last, I can recommend the refurbished pump from North Castle, UK (via e-bay). Reasonable price, backed up with first class customer service. 5* people.

Long ago there was a question about replacing the high pressure side hose on the R50 Mini. I couldn't find any videos of it but I thought I would post my experience with this in the hopes that someone is looking at your excellent video for ideas.... This weekend I replaced my HP tube. When I looked carefully, it appeared as though I could access everything without removing the pump. Indeed this is the case. All one needs to do is: 1. suction out as much hydraulic fluid as possible (covered in your video) 2. jack up the car 3.remove the front left wheel 4. Remove the return line and high pressure line from the cylinder, accessing these through the front left wheel well. An offset socket extension will be required for this 5. remove the HP support bracket (remove the steering cylinder nut and heat shield nut). This is accessed from the top of the engine just below the oil filter 6. Remove the HP fan from below the car (covered in your video) 7. remove the HP line bolt from the pump and pull the HP fitting off of the pump 8. remove the now completely free HP line. This is fairly easily accomplished through the left wheel well. 9. Reverse all of the above for installation. I put a plastic bag onto my HP line's cylinder fitting while installing the line just to keep junk out from falling into the open fitting (the pump side had a cap). I think this is a good idea but I don't think it was actually necessary in my case. Anyhow, again, thank you for the great series of videos. They have been especially helpful to me as I slowly get into doing work on the car. I had $3000 of labor that was quoted by my dealer and it is more than the car was worth. This was for a valve cover gasket, upper mount, lower mount, HP hose and control arm bushings. So far everything is done except for the control arm bushing. I'm using PowerFlex for each of the bushings and I have yet to really run into a big problem. I'm also moving ahead which replacing the ball joints seeing as I have to take the wishbone off anyhow and the car has 118K on it (purchased with 98K so I don't know the history before that... I'm assuming they are original). Again, thanks for the help! Hopefully my post here will give someone insight on how to easily replace the high pressure line.

just did this on my mini one...your guide really helped a lot....the whole process was a bit tricker than yours, since I am in the UK and bolts tend to seize up in the bad weather and salt on the roads...the worst part is the two bolts in the rear of the unit - easy enough to get out but a paid in the ass to get back in..(really short bolts!)...had to leave one bolt out, until i could get a higher ramp to get better access - on normal ramps on a driveway it is difficult and claustrophobic..either get some higher ramps or ramp up on a sloping drive to give more clearance or better still borrow a pit or four poster - would be really easy with one of those.. (rather than lying on your back, getting covered in power steering fluid, whilst rubbing your head on the sub frame! :) :) :)

Hi, great tutorial which has helped me a lot. One point though is that on Mini Cooper in UK there is NO cooling fan fitted as standard as it was not deemed necessary! only on automatics and Cooper S models as they ran hotter apparently. I was shocked to see no fan or wiring for the fan when I removed the pump and assumed the previous owner had removed it and cut the wires off. Fuming for about an hour until I found this out on a forum. Keep up the great work!

Just got a text from the local Mini dealer : your car (2003 Cooper S) has a safety recall. I called and they said it is for the steering pump...…. I told them I had already replaced it; it was beyond the extended warranty; and they said I had to bring it in so they could get the serial number from the pump and take the recall off the VIN. No mention of reimbursement at all. So if any owners of these model years haven't been contacted yet; call your local dealer and enquire about it. I replaced the pump with the help of your videos. Lots of tips !! Thanks !

I've heard different stories about warranty extensions. SO yeah.

Mini extended the warranty on the steering pump for 13 years; mine didn't go bad till AFTER that time. But, apparently now it is being considered a safety recall.

Great video! My 2006 MCS has a power steering pump that is obnoxiously loud, but it still works. (Seriously, it's really loud all of the time - so much so that it takes some enjoyment out of driving the car) My worry is that when I swap out the pump it will still be really loud. But your video gives me the confidence that it's a doable job on a Saturday morning.

Great videos. You are a natural teacher. I was wondering if there is enough room to pull the pump and then unplug the power.

Stephen Fry The wiring to the pump? It is too short and would restrict twisting the pump as needed to get it out of the space.

Great step by step description. Definitely worth doing yourself and saving nearly $600 over independent BMW shop. BTW, the reservoir hose was very difficult to remove from pump. Factory clamp was a royal pain to loosen but even after getting clamp off, was not able to get reservoir hose off pump so I cut it off and replaced with a new hose. Worthwhile doing as this hose was less then $30 and not worth the time and effort on the old hose. I have an ‘06 so unfortunately the warranty only covered thru 2005 models.... bummer

Very cool...thanks for the information...I've got two 2006 Mini Cooper's ...one is a Salt/Pepper base and the other is a Salt/Pepper S...the base model has developed a leak in the PS but the pump itself seems to be working fine...I cut off the nonreusable hose clamps and have replaced them with reusable hose clamps to see if that will fix the leak issue...fingers crossed...if not I may have to do what you did and replace the hoses at the same time.
