Mini Cooper SE Highway range test - Is it really that bad?

At Drivenmad, we repair, maintain and upgrade vehicles in our workshop, here in the sunny Algarve, Portugal.
Most things are our first go ! so remember, experts we are not ! so watch us do it wrong, so you don't have too :)
Having hundreds of kilometres of dirt roads, dirt tracks and various hills with ruts on our doorstep, we venture out and test our 4x4’s to the limit (our limit, not theirs  )
When we can get one, we will slip in a vehicle review, along with some product testing - who does not want to know which tyre stops the best ?

Chargers need standardisation, capped tariffs and simplicity - plus a shed load more with max 20 mins use or fined.

I love my Mini Cooper SE. If you are going on a long trip then you have to plan ahead. It isn't as easy as filling up with dino juice and getting right back on the road. But I never go on road trips. I only drive ~20 miles a day. So I can drive around, charge at home, and leave each day with 100% charge. The benefits of owning an EV far outweigh the possible chance that a charger won't work when you pull up to it. I don't have to worry about oil leaks, oil changes, head gaskets, exhaust leaks, or any of that disgusting last century tech nonsense. EVs are just far superior than ICE-cars.

We drove them last weekend at the local dealer launch - for us (a personal thing) we both found the plastics inside a real let down - the rear of the cooper is not great and the clubman (the one we were thinking of) was incredibly ugly and very expensive - drove a BYD Seal and the quality was a real shock, ignoring the price, everything you touch feels from a class above (sadly ! - no dislike of Chinese products, the Mini is made there anyway, its sad the Mini feels like a cost cutting exercise :( and a BYD is just a better made thing - only would consider the Seal, the Dolphin is opposite to a Mini, nice rear, pig ugly front (no pleasing some folk🤣)

@@DrivenMadShow I test drove the new j01 car last week came away impressed that they have finally done away with all the old chrome, improved the connectivity, kept the direct steering of Mini of old, reduced in cabin noise over F56. Improved suspension. I give you the interior is a big difference from the lounge interiors of the past but compared to the pugs, the fiats and the VW it is a nice place to be in.

We like EV so much, the Mini was just to get me around locally - it is currently in Lisbon, son has nicked it - we drive it everywhere over our Tcross & Mitsubishi etc - so considered a trade to the new Clubman - the positives were it is incredibly comfortable and the seats were top notch - but we both just did not like it (and here with a few bits on was touching 60K, outch :) not close to worth that - just been in a Tesla (next door - here in the mancave - got it yesterday) laughably he did not test it or research it ((it was purely a cheap car to him (no VAT here in Portugal on EV's if you are a business) - nice position to be in !)) to us it looks a stunner, you guessed this was coming - the loss of all stalks is a disaster - we hated it, he hates it - to turn on the wipers its a two or three screen press, on a roundabout you just cannot find the indicators. We did a tour of all dealers the other day, very disappointed in most - as you say Pugs / Fiats / Kias etc are not great, the one exception for me (not son) was the Buzz, hideous cheap plastics etc etc, but I drooled - strange old world (cannot afford one though - the GTX, think that was the new 300bhp on, was right up my alley !)

You should’ve changed the central LED ring around the display to show battery charge %. Then we could easily see what charge the battery is at.

I did my own test in hot Malaysia climate average 80km/h with minimal acceleration and managed to get 270km with 5% left in the tank. It is not the right way to drive Mini Cooper but it was fun to know the car limitation

It's always entertaining at my local supermarket watching folk trying to get a charge. Seen some wonderful fits of rage when the chargers decline cards or arguments over who's queued the longest. As you say fine if you charge at home and use the car locally but hopeless for long trips.

I think it's the paucity of chargers here in Cumbria my neighbour bought a Nissan Leaf but soon got rid of it after I rescued him twice when it ran out of charge.
