I used to be a cashier at a grocery store, and there was this older gent that would do his shopping there maybe once a month who was blind. Well, MOSTLY blind. He could see shapes and contrasts in light, which I thought was fascinating. But anyways, he would always come straight to customer service and ask for assistance. And seeing as I had worked there for awhile, and knew the store well, I was chosen a few times to help him out. It was actually a lot of fun, and I enjoyed helping him out. I suppose it was part pride I had in my store for providing a service of what basically was a personal shopper. Or I was just happy that I was able to make this man's life a bit easier for the half hour it took to do the shopping. But he was also just really interesting to talk to.

ahh thats such a nice comment. I used to work in retail, and the other girls would fight over who could help people. The loved being off the tills, and on the shop floor helping people shop! :)

I have got myself a canvas open top shopping basket. Exactly same size etc as the shop ones. It has a zip compartment for cards on the side. Once the basket is full. Put it on conveyor thing, staff unpack then repack and I’m not overloaded. It will actually go between my feet on the footplate if only light things. Not very elegant but works for me. Ha!

2:48 Bowing bags. I've never heard of them till now. They look like they are a really decent size for carrying allthe small stuff you need, in a bag on your lap. I'll definitely have to see if I can't find some here in Australia. 3:40 That bunch of flowers looked really pretty and gorgeous! I bet they also had a beautiful scent. 4:05 Dashcam. A basic smartphone in a case, on a lanyard on the centreline of the case, with the rear cam facing outwards, could work as a dashcam, I think. You'd want the lanyard to be on the centreline of the case, to keep the camera properly vertically oriented in portrait mode. 4:50 That cashmere hoodie really looks so warm and comfortable. 6:26 Milk. 1 Imperial Pint is about 530ml, and the nearest equivalent size bottle of milk here is a 600ml bottle. That 600ml would last me about 1 day. I buy 2x 2 litres (2x about 3.5 Imperial Pints) of milk weekly, since it's perishible. 6:58 Crumpets. So handy for snacks. My favourite is toasted crumpets, with butter, honey, and vanilla ice cream. I split a pack of 4 crumpets into 4 freezer bags, as soon as I get home from shopping, so they'll keep. 7:24 Reaching high shelves. When the items are not in display/packing boxes, and are not fragile, use your grabber to drag it off the shelf and down into your basket. 8:53 Checkouts. It's annoying to forget your re-usable grocery bags. I started using re-usable shopping bags about 15 years before I wound up having to use a rollator walker and walking stick. The cheap, thin, plastic bags weren't worth spit for surviving the 20 minute walk from my nearest supermarket back to home. So I had to buy some decent quality re-usable cotton shopping bags in the late 1990s. Over that same timeframe, I've gone through 16 re-usable cold foods bags, as their foil linings have worn and torn and failed.

Great video and I’m glad someone else shops the same way I do - I often get asked why I don’t use those wheelchair trolleys! I use an over the shoulder shopping bag, but that’s only because I don’t use a handbag 😀 looking forward to your next post.

I'd be interested with how you dealt with being a parent in terms of nurseries/ schools you can access? i.e. if you're daughter has an assembly etc. can you just turn up without loads of faff? Did that impact on you deciding where to send her to school? Did you having a disability give you any priority in terms of registering her for nursery and then school? Even if you don't use it are you eligable for any additional support for the school runs etc?

I have a whicker basket I use at the supermarket. I put it on my lap, fill it up, go thru the check out with a cashier, then fill it back up. I use a bum bag so a handbag is not half filling the basket. I then have the one basket to lift back into the car.

omg haha I say "I'm out! I'm out!" allll the time now :p I hardly leave the house these days and when I do, it's usually for errands. My main grocery store recently rolled out "Click and Collect". You order on their app and go into the store and pick it up. (or they bring it out to your car) It saves my husband and I SO much time and energy. What used to take 90 mins now takes 30 max. Plus last time we were there I was about 2 seconds away from crashing into this lady coming around the corner. It was totally my fault.... I was speeding in my wheelchair. :p I'm pretty sure my husband acts like he doesn't know me... ahahha

This is kind of stupid, but I was in the entryway of Costco and holding a cart. My husband was like a minute behind me. I think he was looking for a cart outside. Anyway, I can push a cart and my wheelchair at the same time (cause I'm ambidextrous like that lol) but I stopped for just a few seconds while I was waiting for him. This woman comes up to me and grabs the end of my cart. I thought she was taking it for herself. I was like, what are you doing?? She replied, I'm helping you! And I was like, with what??? Cue repeating the same interaction until she walked off offended because I said my husband was in sight. lol Umm maybe ASK if I need help before you assume! p.s. sorry if I told this story already. I'm tired. :p

Like Kirsty with one hand on a cart and one pushing, I just use a normal cart (US English). Try to put most of the weight or mass as close to the rear wheels as possible. I just don’t like it when someone steps or cuts in front of me and I lose momentum. In a chair, one has to push, if one is able-bodied they start pushing a cart by using gravity and “falling” into it. When I get to the register, I am in front of the cart to unload the front part, I then have to back the cart up and go around to the back to unload the seat or upper part of the cart then pushing the cart through. For some reason people seem amazed at the whole thing. Reminds me of a pet peeve, when I am waiting in a line (queue) and someone that is unknown to me is so close behind me that they are standing between my wheels.

This might be helpful, my grandma had 3 kids and to keep up on milk she'd buy 4 at a time and freeze them so itd be enough for 2 or 3 weeks, maybe your husband could pick up several and you could freeze them? I've never tried it but she said it didnt taste weird or anything

Ways to do a weekly or monthly shop even if you are on your own could be tondo it online. Whenever I’m on my own (parents are away on holiday) I just go online and order the things I want/need and have them delivered to the door at a day/time of my choosing.

And with a motorized wheelchair you can hold on to one side of the basket with the groceries in it and you can control your wheelchair with a manual wheelchair it would be a little difficult to do that and that's the reason why I'd rather have my power chair when I go places like that because I don't have to worry about it and it's a lot easie

Do none of your supermarkets near you have the special trolleys (specifically for disabled) that attach to the front of wheelchairs or can be pushed by someone in a wheelchair? I have seen them in the odd supermarket.

Okay you was saying how do people in wheelchairs get like a whole bunch of groceries for the rest of the month or for a long time and it's difficult for you to do that there is something that I noticed one reason why it is difficult for you to get a lot of groceries and with me because I have two wheelchairs and what I usually do and some other people in wheelchairs and one thing you do not have that it would be good for you to have would be a motorized wheelchair because going out shopping things like that you can put a lot of bags on your wheelchair the back of your wheelchair you can put it on the handles and you can put it on your headrest too and with me I do that and I get on the city bus and just come straight home with a whole bunch of groceries that's a lot easier than taking my manual wheelchair because there's early no place you can put your groceries without wondering if your wheelchair will tip over because I have a highlight wheelchair there is no way that I would be able to go shopping and get a whole bunch of groceries with a manual wheelchair that's where the manual wheelchair sucks in that way so if you had a motorized wheelchair you can actually load a lot of groceries up and put it on the handles and everywhere else that you can't do with a manual wheelchair and you can even put it on your arm rest the one that does not have the controller on it and if you had like bread or something that was very light you can even put that on your controller it it will not hurt it
