Love these shopping videos. My cousin challenged me to try the self scan and I’ve never looked back. It saves you ages at the checkout. It’s good to have someone to shop with you the first time to show you how it works then it’s easy after that. If you have Apple Pay on your phone or watch you don’t need to get your purse. You simply grab the receipt and go.

this was so helpful! i may become a part time chair user soon, and grocery shopping is one of the most exhausting tasks without a mobility aid and if i can get my shopping done in a chair i may not have to lie down for hours afterwards lol

That guy when you raised up the tea lights 🤣. Like you, I bring a list so I’m not just wondering aimlessly around the store lol. If I don’t have a list, shopping probably takes me 3 times longer. I too use a hand held basket. I don’t think we are allowed to leave the store with it at my grocery store though. I just always ask an employee to help me get the groceries to my van. Like you, I also avoid the self check out, that’s just all a little too overwhelming to me and also somewhat physically inaccessible to me. Once I’m back in my van and my groceries are in my van, I shove all of the groceries that won’t leak or break into my back pack to help me get everything into the house. I still have to carry some things, but a big back pack helps tremendously. I do the handle in the mouth thing too. I think that is probably a common wheelchair user thing. I have a cat that I have to fight (not litterally lol) to get back in the house. Bringing out the cat treats to get the cat back in the house is usually part of the process for me, and she knows that lol. Lastly, I am exhausted when the whole trip to the grocery store is done. I feel that.

Another great video Gem! Before I gave up driving I had my own plastic shopping basket on my lap, filling it with groceries I would empty it at the check out. Pay, refill, place on lap, out to car, basket on passenger seat, drive home, basket back on lap and wheel indoors. Now I do a big online shop and small shop using my electric wheelchair, basket under seat.

My disabilities have recently suddenly progressed and I haven't gotten a wheelchair yet, but will be likely in the next couple weeks and for the first time I'm learning about how to navigate basic needs in a wheelchair. Thank you for making this video, it makes me feel a lot more confident in the idea of learning to adapt.

I am a wheelchair user, and I use a normal trolley I use one hand to guide the trolley and the other hand to navigate my wheelchair and I have a very heavy trolley I send it right to the top I do about a months worth of shopping. Instead of struggling with a small basket perhaps shopping online might be a better option as your basket doesn’t really have very much in it so it must be quite frustrating for you but I still think you’re fantastic as shopping in the wheelchair is never easy. Xx

I’m so going to show some of our patients this post Gem 👌🏻 I would recommend not loading shopping bags on the back rest push handles as the extra weight can tip the wheelchair backwards. I use the basket on the lap technique too. 🤗🤗 Here’s a random question why are the wheelchair accessible cashier lanes never open when you actually need them? I did find one only to queue up behind abled customers and the cashier closed the lane saying he didn’t see me. He completely ignored me and walked off. Needless to say I left the shopping on the conveyor belt and went to a different supermarket. Why should I give my money to a store that was so rude and unhelpful. I’ve never been back since

I'm temporarily unable to walk after hip surgery, and it has been an eye-opening experience to say the least. Like you said, non-disabled people don't even think twice about half of this stuff. It's crazy all of the challenges you have to face that don't even occur to able-bodied people. Alternating between the wheelchair and crutches this past two weeks has given me a new respect for people who live with these challenges. Something as ridiculously simple as OPENING A DOOR like you did at the end, becomes a chore, and I sometimes drop things as well. It's unbelievable that you are able to cope with all of these challenges and stay in high spirits. You are an incredibly strong person, and working through challenges that most people will likely never get a chance to truly appreciate.

I have a "milk crate" that's plastic (light), and a little bigger than the shopping basket. I use a bungee cord around my back to attach the crate to me and it won't fall off my lap! I also don't have to worry about bags, etc. Also, in most places there are staff members who will help you if you can't carry all your goods. However, you can also push a trolley/cart with your wheelchair. The trolley/cart acts as a steering device and your rear wheels act as a drive. It can take a while if the trolley/cart is heavy, but it's certainly possible.

My phone even at home is always on me for emergency purposes so I never leave home without it... my shopping list is on that rather than paper. Speaking about loading the basket, your lap isn't flat or at least my legs aren't so I keep heavier objects closer to my body and load the outer part with light items. My powerchair has a seatbelt on it and I use a large hook to attach the basket to me. Look up carabiner, they come in many sizes. I've even attached some baskets to my arm supports.

Ohh, Gem I wish I was able to drive! I have to use a local shop where it’s much more expensive, but the staff know me and are genuinely happy to help, they take items to the till, reach stuff and they even tell me what things are on offer. At the till they pack my rucksack and put it on the back of my wheelchair. (They know my weight-limit and have even saved items for me so I could go back for them after a rest!) Some weeks, apart from my carer, they’re the only other humans I get to talk to.

The having to buy the small size of things is a big problem! I lose out on saving and have to go to the shops more due to that. I always have to plan carefully what I can manage as not only am I disabled (use a wheeled walker or chair depending on situation) but I’m medically bared from driving anymore and I’m a single parent. Getting things home is one of my biggest daily issues! It’s good to know I’m not alone.

I love how your husband was making fun of you for putting the bag in your mouth so it doesn't spill and then the bag spilled. Point proven. As for not getting too many heavy things, I can relate. With me having a cane in one hand and balancing the other slightly against the handrail, I can't carry in a lot at one time. So if I go shopping by myself, I have to shop smart and/or make multiple trips out to the car.

I'm a single mom with a power chair and no car, we live close to the grocery store though but my EDS has gotten so much worse that I've got help with most of my grocery shopping now and it feels great! I get help with my laundry and cleaning our apartment too. Here in Sweden they keep remodeling grocery stores so they will be more eco friendly, and put all milk and frozen foods in big cupboards of glass. They really did think about people in wheelchairs when they came up with a that idea🙄, I rather not shop alone anymore, even if people are helpful it can be too much sometimes. It would be a good feeling to just be able to go shopping for what you want without any trouble. Even if I don't mind chatting with children who are asking me about my power chair, they might be learning something 😊

I was stunned to see the stripped path of travel in the parking lot going behind cars. That is so so dangerous. Not allowed in the usa or at least in calif. Always look for exhaust, brake lights or reverse lights as you go along. Please be very aware of the cars backing up. If not, you may not make it to your shopping.

Loved seeing this! I use the "basket on lap" method too, and I always go to the manned checkouts. I can do the self-serve, but I like the interaction with the staff too, it's nice when out and about. I know a lot of people have issues with the dinky wheelchair trolleys but I've never found them a problem (I have good core strength though) - oddly I saw your vid about a week after I went round all the supermarkets in Worthing suggesting they ensure they had them in, and a couple more if they only had one. My big shops are delivered online, but if I'm doing a mid-size, I actually use my suitcase, lol! It's specifically designed for wheelchair users and you just clip/unclip from the back bar on your chair while seated to get it in the car. It's called the Unstoppable Gear Bag from Phoenix Instinct - not cheap but a blessing.

I keep a laundry basket in the trunk of my car that'll I bring into the grocery store when I do my shopping. I'm a paraplegic T-4/5. (Most of the time I can't find a store hand basket to put on my lap) When I get home I can then bring in my laundry basket of bagged groceries (groceries in bags) in my basket and not worry about dropping anything off my lap. So much easier especially if I have more than one bag of groceries.

I do one thing a little different when it comes to those little baskets. I use an elastic strap with hooks on both ends. One hook is attached onto my frame where the handlebar meets the seat part of the frame. I loop excess slack around the same until I get as much length as I need. I bring the other end of the strap around and across to my lap. I then use that other hook to hold onto the basket/basket handles. This way both hands are free for the pushrims and grabbing whatever I need. I don't have to constantly balance the basket or worry about dropping things. Oh, BTW. Gallons of milk, pet food bags, larger items I wedge between my feet on the footrest. Calf strap keeps them from falling off or under my WC. Most of the time though I don't use the store's baskets. I use my larger backpack. Hope this may help you out in case you've never thought of it or tried it before.

Thank you so much for this! It's truly been my biggest issue since I began using my chair. The basket on the lap is genius. Here in NS Canada I have found 2 other options. If you call ahead, a staff member will push a cart for you to let you do a big shop. It's annoying and attention grabbing. But it works. At Walmart (Asda) they have a cart that will hook into the transit loops on my chair. It's a bit awkward and slow to push the chair and the cart but its so nice to be independent!

I've got my wheelchair just 2 weeks ago and I tried shopping with this basket on the lap. It was going quite smoothly but here in Germany it's not allowed to take these baskets out of the shop with you 🙄. So, after the check out it was a struggle to get the shopping to the car. I've now opted for a collapsible box with 4 small wheels to roll in front of me.

Hi! That was good!!! I have some kind of bungee - strapes with carabiners each side. These l eling around my footplate - tubes and around some shopping - cart parts, where l find it's good and fits. Then l can drive my chair and in front of me is my cart! It needs practise and a larg "driving left and right, but after a while it's ok! Sometimes l led my shopping - cart standing anywhere and drive with a little basket on my knees like you, to the sh.cart, to the groceries, to the sh.cart and so on. This l start if my cart gets full. Nowadays l try to set my assisted wheels on power and a low degree so it drives half a mile per hour and then l only must drive my turns to left and right. But this l can't well 'till now! I don't want to shop every day and only little things! Next time l'll try a basket shopping -cart for wheelchair - users. Is it ok, if l tell you how it was??? Be blessed! Yours, Conny L.

OOh this is even an older viceo lol! Only big different was I put my stuff on the kitchen table if it did not need to go in the fredge or freezer, but I'm in an apartment with less space. That had to do with having tons of tons of groceries to the point their is not enough counter space. Also I do not want to put a basket on my lap had that get to heavy we use a oversized American shopping cart bigger then you have ever seen in the UK, and I did not shop alone so it went fine.

Robin Heuver I always have one hand on a wheel and one hand on the basket. I switch hands as needed. I never take my hand off the basket, because it will fall, especially as it gets heavier and heavier. I’m kind of stealing with one hand at a time, that’s why I kind of need to rely on other people to avoid crashing into me, as it is a lot harder for me to avoid them with one hand.

Do you have any recommendations for when you're trying to carry bags clothing shopping for example, as its something I struggle with. I have a PA and someone with me most of the time however there are times when I'd quite like to be a bit more independent and go into a shop on my own, but then find I can't actually hold my bag(s) and push myself at the same time. I have a Quickie Neon 2 which seems to be of a very similar size to yours if that helps. I've been in a chair for several years, but I'm still learning as I try to establish more indepence! 😊 X

Caitlin Alicia amazing that you are looking to be more independent. If I go clothes shopping, I usually take a backpack and put it over the back of my chair. Then I put the clothing in there. If you have a look at my LA vlogs, I have the backpack I use on there. Or it’s in my profile pic. I hope that helps. X

I would love to see variations of shopping, like using the cart with the wheelchair or perhaps using a scooter at the store. And thank you for making these videos! I am always looking for ways to help my patients but sometimes they won't take the time to look up the videos for themselves, as they are frequently new to SCI and overwhelmed.

Ooo good ideas, I have done a video using the shopping cart, but I could try and updated vision. Also I challenged my husband to shop in my wheelchair, that’s a good watch too 😊

You're so entertaining and informative, Gemma. You have a lovely personality. I use the in-store electric mobility scooters. You would have a fitted kitchen suitable for your wheelchair height, if I had my way! (UK)

Btw, I don't know exactly how you transfer, but have you seen the new Jeff Gosling transfer board? It installs in the car and the rotates out of the way. Very nifty, I don't need it, but they showed me when I went to their building recently.

Could you please do a video on how you do your holiday shopping? That would be an interesting and helpful video. For me personally, I’m a little bit on the antisocial side and I lack a lot of spoons and whatnot, so I basically don’t get out into the world to holiday shop if I can avoid it. I’ll do some Christmas shopping online, and also I loom knit and paint and things like that, so I also make stuff as Christmas gifts. How do you all do your holiday shopping?

One thing I've been thinking about trying is buying a basket, which I can keep in the boot of the car, one of the hardest things I find is putting the bag in the car at the end (I almost always have two bags and it's the second that's the problem), then I'm naughty and abandon the basket rather than take it all the way back to the door. The way I shop is identical to you!

I started using Tesco Delivery a year ago and it has made life so much easier. I do enjoy the odd trip to the supermarket and usually found someone to help reach things on higher shelves but always found an hour or more is easily lost and can be tiring so having it all delivered to the door is so much easier, also cuts down on the impulse purchases ;)

Starleen Cooley I cant shop very well or independently without a hand-held basket. I should probably see if I can buy one from Amazon. I always have one hand one the basket and one hand on a wheel. If I don’t hold onto the basket, it will fall.

HELLO I JUST WATCHED YOUR VIDEO. AND I AM IN A WHEELCHAIR I HAVE A DISABILITY CALLED SPINA BIFIDA. I KNOW WERE YOUR COMING FROM. AND YOUR RIGHT. THEY DON'T MAKE STORE SHELVES LOW ENOUGH SOMETIMES. I THINK WE SHOULD START A PETITION TO GET STORE SHELVES LOWERED FOR PEOPLE IN WHEELCHAIRS. I AM FROM THE UNITED STATES THO. SO PLEASE COMMENT BELOW AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK OF THAT IDEA. BECAUSE I ALWAYS FEEL WEIRD OR FUNNY ASKING FOR SOME STRANGERS HELP IN STORES TO GET SOMETHING THAT IS REALLY HIGH UP DOWN FOR ME. MAYBE THEY COULD PUT THINGS THAT THEY MIGHT THINK WE WOULD LIKE AT THE END OF THE AISLES. OR HAVE A SECTION OF THE STORE DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN NOT REACH THINGS. YA I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO SAY. WHY DON'T YOU JUST ASK SOMEONE. BUT SOMETIMES THERE IS NO ONE AROUND. BEFORE YOU COMMENT PLEASE THINK ABOUT THIS. AND PUT YOURSELF IN OUR WHEELS. LOL. INSTEAD OF SHOES I SAID WHEELS. THAT WAS MY JOKE FOR THE DAY. JUST KIDDING. BUT PUT YOURSELF IN OUR PLACE AND THINK. THE AVERAGE PERSON IN A WHEELCHAIR SITS UP AT ABOUT 4 AND A HALF FEET TO 5 FEET TALL. SO WE CAN NOT REACH A LOT OF THINGS THAT PEOPLE STANDING UP CAN. I WOULD SAY ANYTHING PAST THE 4 SHELF IS TO HIGH FOR SOMEONE TO REACH THINGS IN A WHEELCHAIR. THIS IS JUST A FEW IDEAS I HAD ON MY MIND AT 7 AM IN THE MORNING. I KNOW THIS IS A LONG LONG COMMENT BUT I JUST WANTED TO BRING THIS TO EVERYBODIES ATTENTION. YOUR FRIEND, MICHAEL W. HEDRICK

One of the reasons I use Tesco delivery is because of the difficulties finding a Disabled parking bay at my local big store. I would have to make 2-3 journeys to do my regular weekly shop. They're usually prompt and put all my groceries on my worktops.

I walk to the grocery store as it's close and I don't have a car and I feel the pain of always remembering that I can only bring (in my case) what I can carry. It can be frustrating having to buy the more expensive smaller package or forgoing things altogether because I know I won't be able to bring it and then knowing you'll have to go back sooner than had you been able to carry said thing! I probably said that all wrong but you have certainly made me think about what everyday life would be like in a wheelchair as my day goes on and as an adult that is terrifying! Getting on the bus yikes, driving?! even more yikes. I love your energy and how you're upfront that it can be a struggle but is worth it. Many Kudos to you love you channel!

Muffin I’m a wheelchair user, but I understood what you meant. I too have to sometimes buy the smaller item or not at all, because I still have to bring all of my stuff into the house, and the accessible entrance to my house is in the back (there is a smooth sidewalk) and up a ramp. And often I don’t get out until later in the day, so I am sometimes doing all of that in the dark. 😱👻
