My dad showed me how to make a simple battery operated light via a switch through some old car parts and a 12V battery when I was 11. I imagine this is using induction motors that the spin (gyro) perpetuated by water to move the pole in the inductor to generate whatever voltage you desire (generated by the RPM created by the passing water). Of course the RPM is based on the pressure of the water/speed it presses against those plastic fins he made to generate the RPM needed to create AC and using the motor to feed electricity to appliances connected to it. Using more pressure and a bigger motor is how most hydro electric dams work, I imagine. I think in the world, this very old, sophisticated idea, isn't so sophisticated anymore. Not downplaying the work done here, everything is easier said than done, and most kids can't get off their cellphones nowadays.
@martinkennard16692 жыл бұрын
@lmotaku RPM would be based on flow. Power is based on pressure, torque created by momentum of the flywheel effect, and size of the turbine to rotate the rotor. Pressure does allow more flow across a smaller turbine. RPM is controlled by "wicket" gate position.
@lmotaku2 жыл бұрын
@@martinkennard1669 Are you saying pressure of the flowing water doesn't increase the RPMs or am I missing something? I think that we are saying the same thing, but differently. Thanks for the perspective.
@shelbyseelbach95682 жыл бұрын
@@lmotaku Pressure and velocity are not the same thing and ya'll obviously don't understand which is which. Pressures and velocity are inversely proportional in fluids and gases. The water has pressure when standing still and velocity when moving. The more of one you have the less of the other you have. This is the basis of a venturi or convergent/divergent duct. Very few people use these terms correctly.

The problem is you're not using any of the pressure created by the dam. This would work on a stream. If you put the impellers at the bottom of your drainpipe and closed off all of the upper areas - pressure would build to probably five times what you are using here. I think maybe it's a way to clear silt build up, he could just pull the pipe out of the elbow cemented into the base of the dam and the silt will be forced out of reservoir by pressure. Most modern day dams have this in their design. The way he's done it means there's no need for a powered gate valve inside the dam which would be the norm in todays full sized version. It's not hampering the function or operation of power supply at all here.

Another very nice creation. The bigger dog though....he's like "come on dad lets go back to the house I'm tired of being in the dirt" and dad is like "Then go...I'm busy!" The dog...."but I want to be close to you dad and you spend all day out here" Dad says..."I know you're actually in my way!" LOL. Nice dog though. But as I watch these dam projects I always wonder how the water gets from the lower pond/lake to the higher reservoir. If it is being pumped in then you are using a lot more electricity then the dam generates. It would just be so cool to have one of these dams actually generating power. Unless you have a pressurized water source that is free.

That's a Slick Idea! I've always wanted to buy a place with a small river close enough that I could "tap into it" and make a small stream to a big coy fish pond; and the run off would go back around and dump back into the source river. Adding in a hydro-electric dam w/turbines that could power a small 1.5 kw 3 kw generator that WAS powered by a gas engine, That way it could power a battery charger to keep a big bank of batteries to power a power inverter to feed into the house. May not power the whole house, but enough stuff that if the city-wide power goes out I won't be totally in the dark.

There's a lot of variables for getting what you're after, the design of the turbines, how far the water falls (more altitude means more energy) and so on and so on. The math alone is a fun project and that's before even starting the design.

Im not sure if this is for scientific purposes but lifetime of this will be very short... You should use definitelly deeper base constructions in the ground, barrier itself should be concrete with at least some armature across (both horizontally and vertically into the ground constructions). Im not sure how with generators - maybe there would be better efficiency with generators directly under the dam itself as you are losing some (maybe lot) energy in the canals. Definitelly there is a space for redisign generator part - you should put your generators lower and closer to the overflow. as far as i know generators should be at the bottom all of this as you are mostly using hydraulic pressure created by elevation difference Otherwise i must say its great concept with huge potential. Hope it will works well....
