MINI LATHE UPGRADES #4: HI-TORQUE PULLEY & Shop Made Keyway Cutter

This week I'm fabricating a shop-made keyway cutter on a Sieg C0 micro lathe from a junk vehicle steering swivel in order the complete the mini lathe high torque drive (HTD) upgrade. The keyway cutter is then used on the Sieg SX2P mini mill to cut a keyway on the HTD toothed pulley I bored out in the last video to fit the spindle of my 7 x 14 Chinese mini lathe. So, a pretty good use of most of the machining tools I have here in my hobby shop!

ok, wow, i have to do the same job on my mini lathe and was wondering how i was going to cut a keyway. I just happen to have some small fly cutters like yours that use 4mm tool steel! Brilliant idea thank you!

why not use a 4mm drill or 4mm broken endmill as a starting point for a 4mm slot cutter?

I did consider this but it's much easier to grip and align a square-section toolbit shaft than a circular one. Which isn't to say that it's impossible! However, I happened to have the length of 8mm HSS bar stock you see in the video and decided to go with that. Appreciate your input, thanks for taking the time 👍
