I took my rainbow up to Tom Gasko's repair shop in Rolla, Missouri last month and got it restored for $170 (150 for the core repairs plus new tools and caddy). It's a D4C that my parents originally purchased back in late 1992 before I was born (January '94). It was in pretty bad shape needing a new cord, new switch, new motor for the power nozzle, relubed bearings and a really good cleaning. Runs smoother and quieter than at any other time since it was first purchased. Money well worth spent and basically repurchased it as my own. It's gonna be mine till I die.

My grandparents 1989 D4C is very special to me. It's been refurbished, but I still don't use it because of it's age and nostalgicness.

The reason this machine is as dirty as it is is because someone didn't take care of it. These things need maintaining than most people care to. Our Rainbow when I was a kid and up to today was close to immaculate because we were taught to check the separator, dry the basin and dry and wipe behind the separator after each use. These, if ran properly and taken in for a cleaning would still out-clean most vacuum cleaners of its respective era and even today's machines with very little operating costs when compared to a Miele or Sebo. I was taught to take care of my equipment and I do to this day and it's not just my Rainbows, but my central vac, Kirby machines, Ridgid wet and dry vacuum (I probably have one of the cleanest wet and dry vacs out there) my tools, computers (should be cleaned every 6 months) refrigerator as well as my power equipment (Honda mowers, snow blowers, trimmer and Cub Cadet tractors, etc.) by washing under the deck each week with a pressure washer. The Rainbow my parents bought when I was a baby was a 1985 Rainbow D4B (Canadian model) with the rectangular power nozzle, it was very sharp looking brand new, it had a spider like this machine, in fact most of the Rainbow D4 units I have come across all had that spider, the original D4B units and also the SE units. It had just regular hoses with it, the electrified hoses didn't come until later. My Mom was still using that machine up to a few years ago and I still have it with a bunch of parts Rainbows in my room. At some point I want to fix them up and sell them as some need power switches and even new electrical cords. The D4 was one of the better models that Rexair made but my favourite, so far has to be the E2 Black. The European D4 series had a HEPA that mounted on the back, it was kind of an ugly wart but the machine resembled the later E series.

I have too many as well. But most of mine are essentially free.
