"I am not an artist" I actually had to pause in stupefied disbelief. You could not be more wrong, Jay! You make art! You use your perspectives and choices to bring things to the world that did not exist before. That's Art, baby! Nick too!

We have to abandon the old-fashioned idea that "artists" are stuffy, canvas-painting eccentrics. Cartoonists are artists, podcasters are artists, blender modelers are artists, website builders are artists, if you make something that didn't exist before, you're an artist, and you should celebrate your art. That's my position on it :)

“Paint more minis” is absolutely the best piece of advice for beginners or old hands alike, the more you paint the better you get. If I could add one more piece of advice beyond what is in the video it is, don’t compare your work to what other people have painted as this can get discouraging. The only person you should compare yourself to is….you, compare your latest painting to things you’ve painted in the past and see the improvement over time.

When I compare myself to the Content Creator I feel like I'm no good, when I look at the first model I ever painted "oh shit, I am freaking amazing now." and I am not a big painter.

I think it's good to keep in mind you don't have to just paint GW stuff. Just grabbing a cheap $1-3 Reaper Bones mini you think looks neat can give you practice without having to hemorrhage money.

Hey man, just wanted to let you know how much you have helped me recently. I was at hospital with a brain tumour and was waiting to be operated on. I was already operated in 2015 (2 x Awake surgeries, chemo & radiotherapy). I was told that this was definitely going to expand onto the cancer that they couldn’t get within 6 months, but luckily it didn’t. Not until a few recent MRI’s had shown that there was growth. I went in in the 28th November and woke up and couldn’t move my leg or arm and couldn’t speak properly and the next day I was told I had a stroke. I eventually was sent home 2 and a half weeks later (a week before Christmas Day). Anyways, I have always been such a lover for mini modelling, especially Warhammer 40,000! But I never got to pick up a set ever. You have such a great attitude and over the last few months you have expanded my knowledge from painting, bases and I have so much fun each day learning new tricks, tools and tips! From being an absolute noob with my first group of space marines, you give me hope through my chemotherapy to get away from the real world for a-bit. Thank you!

"I like a black primer, because it makes everything on the model completely dark" ... not shit, what a revelation. This changed my entire view on priming minis. Joking aside, great video with nice "step by step" inceases in difficulty for the different techniques used. Also: the witch and the jester look ridiculously good.

Very enjoyable! Paint eyes early so you do not wind up with be bug-eyed stare. If concerned about overspending the eyes, use a little museum tack over the eyes once they are dry. If using washes, use a smaller brush (tip) and less ink/paint to carefully flow around the eyes.
@PaintPants

That is clever advice! Going to try it! Paint the eyes when you've got nothing to loose. And it is easier to tidy up the edges of the eyes when you don't have a lot of surrounding.

This is such a great intro to painting, showing each way to paint and how they all build off each other. Very very cool. I mean, you basically taught people 75% of how to do OSL in two minutes. Also, yay more awesome Lazy Squire Games minus, but this time STLs. I don't have a 3D printer, so I don't have to buy them, yay. . . . and will instead buy whatever one they do next. Still, models look wonderful, especially that jester.

I try not to use washes for detail except on metallics but only because I like to use the way they dry glossy relative to the more matte-finish paints as an effect like putting agrax(or equivalent homebrew), over intentionally badly-layered brown on a black base for full-grain leather or giving guns/tools a coat of nuln(or equivalent) to impart a mechanical sheen.

painting simpler minis is also a great way of practicing highlights and color transitions before moving on to more complex stuff. A mini with a lot of tiny details means a lot of extra opportunities to screw up, but a simpler mini is easier to fix and gives a bigger surface area to practice on. Take OSL for example, a simple town guard/ peasant carrying a torch leave few materials to focus the OSL on compared to the witch in this video. The simpler the mini the easier to attempt almost any technique on, and a well made simple mini can be just as beautiful as the jester in the video. At least that is my experience :)

Re: zenithal highlighting with a color other than white- would you use a red zenithal to do warm highlighting? I'm thinking about how to do the new Commander Dante model (and potentially new Sanguinary Guard) and would like to do a warm gold armor (possibly doing NMM over the zenithal if that's possible).

Unfortunately when I started in 3rd edition 40K I learned a drybrush heavy painting style. I'm now (after a many year break from painting) unlearning this and have moved on to zeni with speedpaint and washes. I haven't quite built up the confidence for the final highlight stage though.

When do you apply the Washes in the Zenithol method? Or do you just completely remove those steps? Also, what are your thoughts on the Slap Chop method which seems to be just dry brushing over the Zenithol > Highlight phase.

Would this be considered slap chop? I recently got a board game with minis and was looking for this type of inspiration. I don’t paint anything like this, but I feel I could pull something like this off. Even if I were to do just the black prime, the highlight method and the base color, the figures would look nice.

STOP. S T O P. Stop. Stop everything. Please stop, just..stop. You are doing both yourself and everyone who watched this video and paints a disservice by stating that you are not an artist. First to pop up definiton: "a person who produces paintings or drawings as a profession or hobby" That's you, check. How about the second definition: "a person who practices any of the various creative arts" That is also you, check. For the checkmate, what is art: "the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power." CHECK MATE SIR, GOOD DAY. I SAID GOOD DAY SIR. You are an artist rather you like it or not, but you definitely owe it yourself to at least acknowledge that a little bit somewhere deep down inside. And all of us who will take your tips and practice applying them are creating art as artists as well.
