The moment when you cut the lines into the wood, the whole thing transformed from a blob of putty into a mini shield. It's an experience that makes sculpting so awesome!

It’s a very powerful part of the process. It’s easy to get stuck in the roughing stage and think that the sculpt will never resolve. That’s why I always try to start putting in details as soon as possible. It’s very exciting when the sculpt starts to resolve.

Damn, you make this look so easy! It's really got my interest and I really want to start trying this, but I'm a little intimidated by just how much seems to go into it.

I completely understand. A great way to get started is to just start doing small conversions for existing miniatures.

That is one of my sculpt stands. I make them myself, but I will be offering a limited quantity on my site in the near future. Thanks Martyn!

Sorry for commenting on such an old thread, but I've got a question. If you wanted to carve or add detail to the other side, how would you do that without damaging the detail you've already put in on the front?

Hi Andrew. I'm doing a Q&A very soon and look forward to answering your question there.

I always learn a new way of doing sculpting from watching your tutorials. When you added the straps onto the shield was the Green Stuff hardened or still uncured?

Thanks John. When I added the straps the main part of the shield was cured. You can add the straps without it being cured, but I don’t recommend it since the putty of the shield can be easily deformed.

I love that intro man, your quality on these videos are amazing. I had heard from an older video about how you needed some kind of measurements set up for digitally sculpting miniatures in Zbrush. Can I know what you meant by this so I could do some more research? Thank you!

Without getting to technical, you can set the units in Zbrush to measure a certain distance. However to truly get the measurement in contest you need to have a shape with a known size. One of the easiest ways to do this is to create a block or a bar and tell yourself, “this is 20mm”. I am doing more digital sculpting and plan to do videos on this very subject once I get more comfortable with teaching in that medium.

I can't wait for those videos, it's gonna be awesome since no one is really making tutorials on that type of thing.
