Good info, I'm a complete newbie learning to sculpt digitally on blender and its been a bit confusing figuring out how the workflow should work for minis in particular, a lot of video tutorials show you how create a model but those are aimed at animation/games purposes so they make a t-pose first and pose it later, so it like you gotta make a whole poseable model before even adding any features, seems like a lot of unnecessary rigmarole when you could just block it out in the desired posed from the start. The posing functions always make a mess too. How do reference images work in the process? do you draw a character reference with front and side views etc? or just work off a single image?

Rokksville really is a constant source of inspiration, their use of disparate bits to make wholly new looking figures is sometimes mind blowing! Love your personal take on the conversion and creating another wonderfully characterful miniature. Carry on being awesome and take care. (Premature commenting there before I got to the end of the video 😅 ) I haven’t played any games for quite a long time, it’s the converting and creating characters I love the most about the hobby. Even when I kinda dropped out of the hobby and going to stores etc I was converting the odd miniature here and there just for my own creative outlet. There’s something to be said for creating your own characters in a setting you love, a bit more of a personal investment. And I absolutely love seeing the things that other people create and that feeds my inspiration and urge to convert further.

Is it the shovel handle clipping through the brim of the hat? Or is that deliberate to provide extra support?

I find all two part epoxy putties best for layers and small details. It fine for filling out body, but find moving it around in hand chances of damage on work and may distort. Sculpy and fimo, have advantages in doing large areas quick bake and do another area. Sadly sculpting on comp I find too perfect with symmetry and you lose alot of personality, but great to build up parts and repetition. if I had a 3d printer it be great to use 3d sculpt parts merged with putties?
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor Ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing! That is a great idea you mentioned about using 3D prints with putty. I actually had a friend who did just that for a band of skeletons. He created a base skeleton model and then converted several figures from it with putty.

@@TomMasonSculptor it something like to do, unless you have to make molds to cast. We all dont like doing repitious parts eg weapons, heads hands and feet or types of clothing, this is where 3d is massive plus Im trying to make a wagon wheel, and boy it is hard, that needs to be cast seperatly, Im sure 3d print10 times quicker

He's so great! So much character :) I think the perceived complexity and need to know all the bells & whistles are what have put me off digital sculpting. It's all a bit overwhelming. Your approach here makes me want to try again, but with the digital clay mindset. When sculpting for minis, as opposed to for gaming or animation, it makes perfect sense to work this way.

Oddly, I've been doing some digital sculpting over the past few days. One of the problems I have with it is that it's way too easy to sculpt details that are too small. I'll sculpt something then print it to gauge my progress. Then make about 1000 updates before I get something that is big enough to see and paint without looking freakishly out of proportion.

Absolutely agree with this. Zooming out until it is about real size on and changing matcaps/shaders a bit, using bpr if in zbrush can help, but I also still find this really hard.

Interesting. As I first learned mesh modeling before digital sculpting was popular, I didn't really understand how to use the sculpting mode of Blender. Now that I have done a few clay sculpting, I understand the digital tool better, and I would use it like clay sculpting. Mesh modelling and sculpting seems to me to be different philosophies.

Thanks, its nice to see a "conventional" artist tackle the digital form. Regardless of the medium, there is still an organic feel to the sculpt, and choosing to work on him in his final pose, I think helped a lot. I've made a couple of miniatures for scale modelling, and tried to keep it in a generic A pose as long as possible, to get the benefit of posing via armature for multiple variations, but it didn't do any favors on the end result. I guess by the time I reached what I considered a good result, I had spent too much time on the generic design, and didn't spend enough time to make each figure unique. Your approach seems a lot more... enjoyable :) And a question: did you make any changes in your process, to make printing and support removal easier? The way I see the model, I would print it head down. *Just saw the short about this, ok, not how I would print, but it turned out nice, and the final painted result looks awesome!

The Wacom One is a great economical starter tablet monitor that let's you stay in the Wacom family. I've heard good things about XP-Pen and some newer companies as well. You might save a little more, but the price difference isn't as great as it used to be. Which is actually good because those other brands have started making better products.
