I bought two washable metal filters off Amazon from a custom filter shop…..each 10x20. Taped them together and laid them on top of my mini split air filter intake. Simple. Cheap. and works. Plenty of airflow and protection.

Great idea! I'd recommend using foam weather stripping as a gasket instead of tape for sealing; that will make it a little easier to take apart if needed.

Jay Good morning I would say it is actually a good thing that you put what we would call "Pre-filters" on the mini splits in the environment that they are running in. The filters will help keep the evaporator coils clean and keep them from getting plugged with dust. The trick will be to keep the filters changed regularly. As the filters get filled with dust they will cause low airflow on the evaporator. Low airflow on an evaporator is bad for a refrigeration circuit and can cause issues. Love your channel! Jay, thank you for the heavy level of detail in these videos about you mini-split filtration system. I am in the process of building my third shop with the luxury of a ground up build. I have discussed doing something very similar to this with both GC and HVAC guys. None of them were comfortable with it for a bunch of reasons, none of which sounded like more than FUD to me. You experience is more than enough to convince me that I had the right idea. THANK YOU! I can't tell you how much I appreciate the extra confidence. IMO, this is an ideal air cleaning solution and will extend the life and efficiency of the mini-splits. Your air cleaner box is also a wonderfully simple solution, very similar to the filtered downdraft table I built into one of my work surfaces.

It DOES work! I put a filter box above my mini-split three years ago and my coils remain very clean. I simply change the filter EVERY month, using the pleated paper 3M filters. Since I change the filter monthly, I only have a single 20x25 inch filter. Air flow seems to be very good.

Have you done any CFM readings to test output before/after? I think Jay may have overkilled on four per unit but also think one *seems* low.

J D hi JD, I don’t have anything to make scientific measurements. But I figured one 20x25 filter area being 500 square inches would be fine since the mini-split inlet area is 28x8 (224 sq in). So the filter is slightly more than twice the area.

Regarding the power draw vs airflow... I had it backwards and I have no clue why it was stuck in my head that way. I saw Matthias' video on airflow and power draw a couple years ago and I completely had it backwards since. Dumb brain moment. Reduce the air flow and the power draw will reduce. I stand corrected. I was going to mention this glad you got it straitened out. I see no reason why the filters would stop the units from working. You have far more filter area and less flow than what the filters are designed for.

HVAC tech here, you are totally fine doing this you have tons of filter space and the good thing about this is that it allows them to still flow more air than just one filter as they start to get dirty. I would make sure you swap them out regularly don't let them get to bad before you change them out. Your air filtration cabinet's filters are way to dirty for your mini split as an example. Oh an LS1(AW/SW) here.

From an HVAC an indoor air quality guy I give you a 10 out of 10 👍 without much filter face area you will have no restriction with those little mini split head. And if you thought you had some restriction you could pull that washable filter screen off from inside the mini split head that causes more restriction than the filters that you have installed. The mini split can also pull in dirty air from the seam mounting against the wall from the backside crack. So if you really wanted to seal up your mini split from dirty air tape around the entire mini split sealed to the wall. By the way I use Merv 16 , 5 inch deep carbon impregnated filters

Great idea Jay. I had a mini split system in my last shop. Every few weeks I would have to clean out the filter, and it would be CAKED with dust. I read somewhere that all that dust can actually damage the system over time - not sure if that's true, but I mean... I did read it on the internet.

Typically, air handlers, which is effectively what a mini-split head unit is, will be rated for a certain static pressure drop. You can measure that with a dual port manometer. I recently finished my HVAC system (a ducted Mitsubishi unit) and used a cheap $30 digital manometer off of ebay to verify the static pressure increase.

Hi Jay: Great idea and execution to ensure your shop and office air is as clean as possible. When you first did the shop air filter cart it inspired me to ask my HVAC tech for some old furnace fans. He brought me three different sized fans, and the resultant cart was built so I could test which size fan worked best. Sort of "Goldie Locks and the Three Bears", and the smallest size worked best for my size shop. Thank you again for air filtration cart. I don't know if this would work or if it's feasible, but when you need to service the two shop level split units, could you add a second french cleat up higher on the wall for "temporary storage" of the filter box while you work on the unit? Following service, lower the filter box down to the permanent french cleat position. Just a thought and thank again for bringing us your inspirations and please keep up the good work. Best - Michael

I think you will be fine with what you did. Ronald Walters did something like this back in 2017 for his minisplit. he ended up modifying it to add additional filters to increase the air flow. He did this because although he had enough air flow for the cooling/heat, he wasn't getting enough to remove the humidity. Once he added additional filters it fixed the humidity problem. So I would say watch your humidity in the shop If its good then you should be fine.

The device you are talking about is a velometer. We use it in HVAC applications to measure duct velocity and face velocity in lab hoods. You could also use a manometer to measure the pressure drop across the filters (if there is a measurable amount).

Moving more air takes more amps, restricting air flow decreases amps, running a fan in a vacuum uses very little energy since there is no resistance. That's why when you put your hand over the end of the hose on a vacuum cleaner the motor speeds up and makes a higher pitched whine. I'd say you haven't restricted the flow at all. Nice work 👍

You’re the second person I’ve seen on KZbin that’s added external filters to their mini split. If all goes as planned I’ll have my system installed sometime early next year (saving money for it). After it is installed I’ll look into adding some external filters too. Your video will be of great help at that time. Since I’m not sure where my AC guy plans to mount the unit I’ll have to wait before I can make plans for the filters.

Awesome video! I also did the same thing with the house but the other direction with the kids starting to move on in life. So, smaller house, more land and a shop that is bigger than the house. Now I have a blank slate to work with and your shop is very close to what I have, so thanks for the great ideas, even on the HVAC which I was wondering how it would work. Jay- very clever! I don't think after 2 months that was very much dust built up on the mini-split filter. I have to clean my air conditioner filter every few days due to two cats in the house. Just a thought- the frame in between the unit and filters, if you made that from a hardwood you could use threaded inserts so repeated removal doesn't cause the plywood to come apart. And all those people who said it wouldn't work probably don't have a shop or mini-splits. Damn back, seat drivers!

I built a similar air cleaner cart a few years back. When looking for a blower motor, I contacted a couple local HVAC companies about purchasing a used blower motor. I explained to them what I was going to do with it. One flat out said they wouldn't sale or give me one. The other said they would be happy to sale me a brand new one for about $200. They refused to sale me a used one. My patients payoff eventually though. I ended up finding a brand new one at a rummage sale for I think $30 bucks. The guy was an HVAC contractor who was retiring.

Base on your design I undertook a similar project. Your first gen design was great, though I did raise the filter box up a few more inches and created a longer flange connecting it to the minisplit so all I had to remove was that when I wanted to remove the plastic cover for maintenance.

I just cleaned my minisplt. Took me 4 hours. I could not believe how dirty everything internal got over 1.5 years. I clean the screens monthly but, they really don't do any real filtering. I am just going to put a simple filter over the top at the intake of the system to try and curb it. I don't even care if it looses some efficiency. I don't want to have to clean that much dirt anytime soon!

As far as air flow vs motor amps. I don't know if this would relate to your mini-split, but in my Harbor Freight dust collector, the motor draws maximum amps when the air flow is at maximum, that is, the current is at it's most when the inlet is unrestricted. Blocking the inlet results in minimum current being drawn by the motor. I have 12 blast gates and have charted each inlet vs air flow vs current drawn for each. With all blast gates open the current is at maximum.

Looks great just make sure you obviously keep the filters from getting too dirty since that will affect the airflow to the indoor coil which in return will affect the condensor causing it to run harder because refrigerant pressures will change.

Great video. I am commercial HVAC journeyman. I think you are dead on with adding extra filters. It offset’s there restriction. You would probably have problems if you did one filter. I would also add the thickest filters you can. Thicker filters =more surface are. That means less frequent changes. If air flow on the indoor unit is restricted to much in cooling mode it will ice up. So keep an eye on that. The only thing that is wrong in the video is if airflow is restricted the AMPS will drop. Because the fan is doing less work. But it would be hard to tell because it is a fractional house power fan. Keep up the good work. Always good videos.

You could simply turn the units on and cover a few filters with cardboard which will reduce the airflow thus showing you the change in amperage..

The large combined surface area of those filters, coupled with the static pressure that those units are designed for, may not move enough air, to make efficient use of the media. A good measure would be of the vacuum inside the boxes, especially before and after cleaning the filters. To properly filter - the air needs to move.

If it does, then possibly by monitoring the amperage, you'll be able to monitor the overall condition of the filters.

I am curious if you are already at max even if you decrease the airflow the fans are not able to draw more amps because they are already at the max. Maybe you should do the test in a medium setting which has the possibility to go up and down. That said I do not think it should be an issue.

Simply judging by the fact that when you block your shop vacs inlet, the motor draws significantly less power, I would think that when the unit is already at max, restricting the airflow would only lower power consumption cause the turbine has less air to move thus making it easier.

Cool. The only thing about mini splits that has always bothered me was the lack of filtration or the ability to have any decent filtration. You should make these out of aluminum or plastic and sell them. Put a grill on the front. And maybe use just one large 4’’ media air filter. Rubber grommet. Or rubber skirt to attach to unit.

Your comments at ~17:25 about "others saying it's not going to work" make me laugh. If anything it looks like you over engineered the surface area of the external filters. With an external filter box there is no longer a need for the washable filter so if there are any lingering concerns what so ever about air restriction just get rid of it. Since I have no idea how much air the head unit moves, I would like you to follow up in a year or so (with a quick hit in one of your shop update talking videos) and tell us how much dust gets caught on the filters that are offset from the intake. Your new shop is looking fantastic, best wishes for continued success.

I use SimplySafe. I'm pretty happy with it. Thanks for doing this about the filters. I'm really having trouble in my shed though. Not enough space to get the runs to work right. Its driving me crazy. And you can't find a HF DC in stores anymore, and they are rare to find on CraigsList now too. Its really tough to get past this, and on to wood working I actually want to do. Very frustrating.

9:03 Did you use the glue to seal for air-tightness, or to add some strength to the joints? I just did something similar, but I used caulk to seal it up. Never occurred to me to just use a pile of glue (actually, I think my glue probably would have been too low viscosity to hold up in vertical and inverted orientation fillets). PS: That is a great picture!

I wonder how the air flow might change as the filters get dirty, I’m thinking not much. But remember with this kind of pump, pumping more fluid draws more power, less can reduce it, and stalling it usually makes much less amp draw. Hi Jay, great idea but I believe that your wrong about the amp draw. If you restrict or even completely block the inlet the amps will go down. This is because the motor is doing less work, aka moving less air. You can test this by completely blocking the inlet with Saran Wrap and checking the amp draw before and after. There may not be a noticeable change in the amps because the fan motor in mini splits are rather small and the main draw would be the compressor. If your mini split has a fan only setting that would be the way to go.

Have you checked with Your Mitsubishi dealer about warranty issues. Also the sensor for your mini-split is in the top of your units

Wonder what the manufacturer would say and how it affects any warranties? I think I’d use the cheap blue fabric filters instead of the pleated filters. I know these are better but I’d worry about longevity of the mini split since those things aren’t cheap.

Jay one thing the naysayers don't get is if your happy with what you did that is what matters. What they think does not matter a rats rear end. If your happy they can shut the hell up. What matters is you love what you have done. The majourity of us do as well.

Jay, maybe I missed your reason the filter boxes are not centered on the unit? Seems the filter the furthest from the unit would not be drawing air in as much as the other three. wm

Anemometer is the name of the meter for testing air flow. Sounds like there is no need to test the decibel level as the mini-splits are barely noticeable. One thing to add similar to what you see on many new vehicles would be a restriction indicator device, like you’ll see on the air filter box of vehicles. Not sure if you could use one from a vehicle or not. If you can, it’s likely you could get one very cheap from a pick your part wrecking yard.

I’m sure the mini-split manufactures state not to restrict airflow. Your experiment more or less debunked that claim. Unit failure related to airflow super unlikely. With all the dust collection devices you already have plus this, yes cleaner air in shop than living room. What a great shop you have. Never miss your videos.

Jay, thanks for the video and the recent followup video showing your success. How did you decide on 4 filters? Obviously the potential for more airflow and surface area. 1 filter would certainly be more area than the standard filter. The MERV filters are going to reduce airflow because of their density, so maybe that's the answer.

How about a pressure test on both sides of the filter. I'd say anything over a psi and you are getting a performance hit on your air circulation.

The device that measures air flow is called an anemometer. I just bought a single 2 ton Daikin mini-split heat pump for my 24' x 38' shop and will be using three 4" x 16" x 25" Merv 8 Skuttle pleated filters. These have a double foam gasket on the top and bottom and I plan to add weather stripping between them as well as a track to slide them into. Thinking I should be able to eliminate the transition piece and mount the unit directly to the bottom of the filter box then simply remove the filters to service the unit. I have a Powermatic PM1200 air cleaner that I am going to mount near it as well.
