Mini Workbench build.

I needed a tabletop workbench for more comfort for fine woodworking detail work as its a great way to bring smaller work closer to your eyes, and to up my saw game. Was also important I have a moxon vice again, I gave my old one to my brother and I've always missed it!
Made from oak, it includes almost all the features I need in one tool, surface planing against planing stops or between bench dogs, straight edge planing, which can be used for both Western and Japanese planes, and a vise. The front jaw has two sides to it, one side with dog holes and the other with a 45 degree chamfer for dovetail work.
It can be either clamped to an existing table or bench, or can work well with friction pads, when not too much force is needed.

Do you know what fella. That project may be a tad overkill with all the extravagant jointing, but boy, what a lovely looking top bench extension. Well made and strong, nice.👍 Another thing. I watch several American woodworking channels who it seems, depend primarily on using power tools to do 90% of the work. Not Bourbon Moth, hes funny and good at his trade. But to many, produce a chisel, and they would probably think it was a type of screwdriver. Im not joking, im serious. Im not saying all are like that, but I've seen some channels where I've not seen a single hand tool on the wall or anywhere in sight. Everything was either battery or electricity powered down to the laser ruler and measuring tape they used. I mean, come on. Are they that lazy, or perhaps they dont know how to use a traditional tape measure? I know, they could have failed math and have no idea what fractions are or they do, but don't know how to use them. Thats why the metric system is so easy to use. An idiot can use it right? There was this one guy. I would say he was in his mid-60s. I think he went by the name of Traditional Restoration or American Restoration, something like that. Dont get me wrong. He had all the tools in a nice-looking workshop. He had really old wood turning lathes and drill press, all electrical mind. He even had loads of old antique furniture about the place. Damaged but ready to be worked on. He had walls covered in every hand tool you could possibly imagine. Mallets, hammers, screwdrivers, chisels, planes, 20 different types. Some were made of wood, block planes i think you call them, he didn't know. While some were metal. He used hot glue to repair old cabinet draws or splits. Melted crayons or candles to fill gaps before varnishing, but other than that, he was 5hit at carpentry. He had no clue what he was doing and what he did do, he did it badly. Joints were open not butted up properly. Even his wood matching for grain and colour match left a lot to be desired. I think most people like him have a little knowledge and an old GoPro kicking around the house. They have a brainwave thinking, i know, im skint but i can make a video to earn myself money, and some do. Some earn a lot of money, loads of dollars, but the difference between them and this man is, they know what they are doing whilst this guy, this elderly gentleman, he is a joke. He said that he had been in the trade all of his working life building reproduction furniture and that he had just landed this big contract to build new furniture. Bollocks, WTF! I bet he was on drugs, strong ones because he must have been high to come up with such a statement. What a numpty. Mate, im not joking. You should have seen his attempts at repairs. Even basic carpentry, building a draw using dovetailed joints only his wasn't. Not a slant or angle in sight. He didn't even know the correct terminology. 😂😂😂 Dickhead, tool!😂 By far, your channel is the most entertaining I've come across in a very long time, since 2007 when i opened my KZbin account. I find your style of carpentry and voice-overs, which are hilarious at times, so refreshing. I think a lot of the old school ways are becoming a dying art. Hats off to you mate, I can’t watch the US lot, they’re fucking selling something every time I hit play, I’m like okay wtf is it you’re selling, then bang at the end “this is why I use this…” I’m like fuck off! It’s why I did the vid on the Domino machines, every fuckwit promoting the 500 cause it’s the cheapest and most likely to be purchased using their affiliate link - which is just plain wrong and a lie. There’s so much lying going on in KZbin it’s shocking, I learnt how to make from KZbin not cause I was told the correct way, I learnt cause that was a mistake to follow and found the way myself from that mistake. The thing that bugs me the most, I’ve an eye for detail with a design background but yet someone who is only able to make a box does better on KZbin 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’m never gonna find a ladder tall enough to get me off my soapbox this morning 😂

@@HewAndAwe no, it was perfectly fine for me. Maybe when there are complex joinery like the one you did there, more camera angles would be easy to follow. But that's just a personal opinion. It may be different for different viewers 😁. Also the Facebook group maybe focusing more on the video edit style, rather than on the actual joinery/woodworking. Example: not everyone wants to see 8 boards planed. Just one is enough to get the story going, which is exactly what you did. Does that make sense 🤔? 😄

@@HewAndAwe Hopefully they arrive soon! I have noticed they are a little long... do you find they get in the way when planing? Might add a thickness of wood or two behind the back of the jaws to make them a little shorter. Was a toss up between those and making my own using two tail vices. Cheers for the reply! Nice build! Do you find that the protruding metal "screws" get in the way? I think it would be perfect if the screws fed back into the bench instead of protruding out the front of the hand wheels.

They do a bit and there’s nothing I can do bar cut them shorter as the thread is welded to the back plate.

It does me in that the world's designed for midgets and I'm only 5'10. I'm planning to add something to my workbench like this for holding - and another full of holes to attach an exhaust to for sanding. Then things will be up higher. That's a quality piece of work you've got there - will it attach to the workbench or rely on being solid to hold it still?

Thank you Chris, yeah it can be used with its own weight but I do clamp it to my bench, had a few goes at some dovetails yesterday and it was so much more comfortable and my sawing was bang on which was nice. I know what you mean about height, I'm 5' 9" and find everything to low bar dinning tables.
