I don't understand why people always talk about having more surface area to glue for holding power on a domino. Dominos are best used for alignment and facing rather than providing structural integrity to a joint. Sure, it can provide some structural benefits, but if you have your joints properly cut so the faces are touching all the way through the joint, the glue between the pieces are more than enough to keep the piece together, the wood is going to break before the joint will. The most useful thing about the domino joiner is the fact that it makes alignment and facing quick, easy, and reliable on your joints, especially on flat projects like tables. Having the face already aligned and flat means less processing after the glue dries. So you get your pieces together quicker, you have to do less processing of the face afterward, and that equals time and money. Otherwise, all this stuff about it providing strength doesn't really provide any value to the tool. What makes the tool valuable is speed at which you can operate, the amount of post processing you can negate, and the reliable repeatability in the work.

Great to see this again mate...lovely work and a cheaper slab! I'll get round to replacing my ply topped old school work bench but I'll re use the record 52 1/2 vice as I've got it. I have another I thought I could put on the end too to have a movable set of dogs for long surface board flattening. Or am I being daft?

@40:04 - You're welcome. I saved you forty minutes of time so you can see what the gate looks like after it was completed and installed. The gate looks amazing. For any TikTok folks or people with short attention spans. 70% of the video is building the gate, 30% of the video talking about the work and working together to build the gate and 0% of the video is about how the gate was installed.

Cause the title of the vid was “how to install driveway gates” wasn’t it. That’s a chippies job.

Shouldn’t the diagonal brace run from opposite the hinge side at the top to the hinge side at the bottom?
@HewAndAwe9 күн бұрын
No the diagonal brace should run from the corner of the hinge upwards, the idea being it should stop the gate sagging in the middle. Thanks for watching dude 🍻🍻🍻
@richardslater6777 күн бұрын
@@HewAndAwesorry to be a nuisance but on the first picture, where it says “oh-sh?t”, the pair of painted black gates clearly shows the diagonal braces running from the hinge side at the top, down and across to the non hinge side at the bottom. This does not support the gate. For the brace to be effective, it has to support the top horizontal rail at the far end of the rail. This is what stops sagging. Edit. Sorry, just seen the gates at 28.22. (Unpainted). These show the braces the other way round so maybe the first picture has the gates on the wrong side of each other. Nice work by the way.

six minutes; REAL similar to my approach. I got into Japanese handplanes because of the extreme simplicity. I DON'T scoop out the sole the way Nihon no Shokunin (Japanese craftsmen) do. I don't think that there's enough of a benefit - I believe James Krenov would agree with me as well. A quote that hit me like a ton of bricks comes from Tim Ferris, the really smart bald, white guy on youtube - well, there's a few, but Tim is a genius; anyway, he said, "perfection isn't when you have everything you want - it's when you get rid of everything that you don't need." ...still hits hard...
@HewAndAwe9 күн бұрын
Do you mean flatten the sole? Never heard of scooping the sole 🤷🏻♂️
@zenkenshokunin8 күн бұрын
@@HewAndAwe Japanese handplanes are typically 90% "complete" (in their eyes) from the maker. The end-user/craftsman will then fettle with it until he's satisfied with the feel and performance. One of these adjustments is to scoop out the "toe" and "heel" of the handplane sole EVER SO SLIGHTLY. Similar to the way they scoop out the back of their chisels and plane irons. The thought behind it is similar to the cast iron handplanes with those corrugated soles. My experience is that it's complete bullshit and unnecessary. HOWEVER, a properly fettled Japanese handplane is an absolute DREAM to use! ...just skip the scoop. I think the same is true for Japanese chisels - a DREAM to use but skip the scoop. Western chisels and mallets (in my opinion) are cartoonishly oversized and cumbersome to use compared to a properly sized Japanese chisel and gennou hammer.
@HewAndAwe6 күн бұрын
@zenkenshokunin thanks for that dude, learn something new every day 🤗 as much as I admire jap work I feel it’s way over engineered and unnecessary, it’s beautiful don’t get me wrong…

Ben, i was minutes into this video, when the chuckle brothers appeared.....f**king brilliant!! My initial reaction was "what a double act" but as it progressed, that changed to "what a team". You guys appear to be made to work collaboratively, and as a bloke with 24 years in the military, you can see when a team gel together, because they do nowt but take the piss out of each other, whilst maintaining a huge degree of respect at the same time. and that Sir, is what your closing comments showed, I for one loved this, the banter, the mutual respect , the skills on show, and quality of what you both produced together, was simply magnificent. I salute you and Mr Joshua.

Speaking solely for myself and not necessarily for your viewers combined. TBH. It will take a bit of getting used to, this new Hew and Awe obviously it is a bit different. I loved the old channel and all the things that made that channel what it was. Specifically you, your attitude, the cut of your jib, the perfectionism and the skill. Not to mention some of the stories, the picture frame vid was very moving, the what got me started was inspiring, the table saw refurb was awesome. Like I said, the new look will take a bit of getting used to BUT. This vid was good, your outro was very good and showed the loyalty and gratitude you have towards your friend. If only we all had a Josh. I am grateful you didn't just give up, I could see you weren't completely in the game for a while which at times, as a fan, was tough. Most importantly though (and I fully appreciate this means fuck all coming from someone who has less creativity and ability in me than you have in a bead of sweat) regarding 15 years of doing it wrong is not true, you know that, enough said about that so I do not need to elaborate. Where there's a will there's a way, you certainly have the will. Go and take over the woodworking world, you build it we will watch it. Good luck to both of you.

It's interesting to watch you two together with different approaches to woodworking. You'll find your stride and make funny and watchable content. Joiners seem to make big stuff using big machine cut joinery. You could bring more refinement as a furniture making with smaller more delicate, hand cut joinery. The contrast would be a selling point for the videos.
