I think the "teaching X with a beginner" format is a great idea! So often, experts cover a topic from a very clean perspective, but being a beginner is never clean. We mess up, misunderstand things, or require multiple explanations. Having a noob to keep your explanations grounded sounds like a great approach.

What you said at 5 minutes strongly resonates with me. I put many videos in my watch later, these later get recycled in my feed, and I get annoyed when their thumbnails rotate. It feels like there are tactics being used to force my click when I was going to get to it on my own time, regardless.

I still get notifications fairly regularly that a comment I left on your painting with a beginner video is getting engagement. Definitely the most evergreen content I have on KZbin. Haha. I loved your chat with Vince and think a series where you chat and paint with other creators would be a blast to watch.

Thank you for such a deep dive behind the scenes, it's nice to get some perspective into the back-end side of mini painting channels. FWIW I've been getting your content regularly on my front page despite not being subscribed (something I've just corrected!) and yeah, I agree with others' frustration regarding thumbnail/title changes (a problem that is in no way exclusive to your channel). Personally I'm hitting a bit of a wall in my painting, and I think part of it is because I spend a lot of time watching videos about painting and then I psych myself out of actually sitting down at my desk and getting to it. You touched on it in this video, but the proliferation of painting content is also intimidating in some ways; sometimes it's frustrating to see a glut of content around the same concept at the same time, other times I feel bad when I don't watch a creator I like and then my algorithm "forgets" about them over time. Also re: content variety - it may be hypocritical for me to say as someone who doesn't always watch my subscriptions when they do content that's way outside their lane, but I think it's important to branch out and do different things, if for no other reason than your mental health! One thing I'd like to see a painting KZbinr tackle: how to fix screw-ups. There's a lot of "don't do A, do B instead," which is nice, but it'd be good to get some insight on "you've been painting something for a few hours and your brush slipped/you realized something isn't working/you feel like a failure, how do you pull back from the edge and recover."
@ScytheNoire4 күн бұрын
Stating intent is SO important when teaching. Quite often while learning, the pupil may wonder "Well why are we doing it this why? Why not do it this other way?" and when it comes to watching a video, we don't get the chance to ask those questions live. So stating the intent really helps understand the reasoning behind why something is done a certain way.

Hey, a warning Re: shorts, at least in the circles i float around in, the net effect of introducing shorts to the channel has been negative. Obviously we're in very different sections of the platform so i dont want to speak with complete confidence but ive heard FAR more "a few viral shorts ruined my channel's regular video performance" than anything positive. From what i can tell, a lot of shorts viewers are only watching shorts, and will either be fed your regular videos after liking your shorts or subscribe to your channel for more shorts and never watch your regular videos despite being served them on their home page, therefore hurting your CTR and nuking the channel. Again, we're doing very different things on this here KZbin so this might not be entirely relevant but i wanted to pipe up with what ive heard in the dark corners that we gaming tubers inhabit. Love what you do, cheers.

Def a strong end to the year. Enjoy your break and catch up in Jan. I wonder if you or your regular viewers would value a monthly rota - e.g. week 1 = skill refresher / essential tool reviews, week 2 = adv masterclasses, week 3 = games spotlight inc your own game design progress, and week 4 freeform! Maybe not great for those who only value one aspect of your content but having structure plus a freestyle slot could help with planning and editing etc while giving enough variety and creative license? Anyway, here's to a prosperous 2025 for you and the Miniac channel!

Anecdotal experience here on the algorithm not surfacing videos subject: I have a “large” amount of channels I’m subbed to (over 25) and it tends to change the content I see when I click on the subscriptions filter based on what channels/content type I’ve been watching most frequently and recently. For example: with the election it appears that election based news got surfaced up in my subs and mini content got pushed down, probably because that’s what I was engaging with most at that moment. Past the election, it’s surfacing less news content and more gaming/mini content again. However it’s also choosing to show me Ninjon, Squidmar and Midwinter minis more frequently than you (despite my two favorite channels actually beings Monica and TUP). I make a point to watch all your videos, especially with your new one-a-week plan, because it’s what I want. However the algorithm is definitely working against you rn

I agree with your view on the multi thumbnails. There have been a couple times I skipped a video because I was busy with something else, and I’d come back to it later. Then later on the thumbnail was different. It was a bit jarring. Personally I liked the first thumbnail better, so clicking on the video when a different thumbnail was displayed would have been incorrect in terms of analytics. I’d rather videos just have a single thumbnail. When it changes it makes me feel like I’m being pressured to click and watch it. Like “hey! You didn’t watch this video before. How about now? How about now?”

Just FYI, I would immediately click any how-to painting or modeling titles over pretty much anything else, even if I've seen that tutorial done by other people. There aren't many videos showing the actual process of painting a mini from start to finish. Sometimes you get a short view of what wet blending or glazing looks like, but there's a lot more to the whole process than a 20s here and there of actual footage of the painting process. I got more out of my Adepticon classes with Banshee than most of the videos I've seen on the internet. It was incredible to see how quickly he blends on the pallet then hits a bust with color. The waxing poetic stuff is great for storytelling, but when it comes down to it, most people just want to see a process and learn new skills. That's why vlogs generally do horribly, then the same channel's how-to's on virtually any topic do 100x better. The same probably applies to useful hobby hauls. I love watching the Squidmar 'scam' videos, even though I may not agree with their ratings half of the time.

18:30 it's a roadblock because most people that watch stuff on youtube do not use subscriptions tab and simply browse the home page for their content. If something doesn't show up there, then they don't watch the videos. By viewing the subscriptions tab you are part of the elite 1% of youtube users. It's sometimes hard for the 1% to relate to the unwashed masses. Hope this explanation helps.

Wow, I had no idea there was a Subscriptions tab! I’ve always relied on what KZbin shows me; and I might sometimes click on one of my subscribed channels if I remember that I haven’t seen anything from them in a while. I imagine I’m not the only one who hasn’t made use of the Subscriptions page.

While the subject matter is far from completely irrelevant my favorite mini painting videos on KZbin have been those where the friendships that have developed amongst the little microcosm that you belong to have been on display. I think I listen to/watch a lot of videos as a result of moving from working in close proximity with a bunch of my friends (restaurant kitchens) to working alone at home (software engineering) - I miss the camaraderie and banter. I don't watch Squidmar always necessarily for the content, but for Emil and Luka's dynamic on camera. I love seeing the footage from VinceyCon from yours, Vince's, Jon's, and Sam's points of view. Maybe the special sauce in the Painting Faces with a Beginner video was just the added component of direct human interaction. I also love Drunk Mini Painting, please bring that back.

I would love a series of the basics where you show each of the basic techniques to a new painter. Even though I would consider myself to be a medium level painter, I think it would be helpful and entertaining to watch you teach a new painter things like layering, basing, painting gems, nmm, true metallics, drybrushing, wet-blending, highlighting, etc.

I'll be honest, I didn't respond to the survey but I think I get the algorithm thing. I'm subscribed to Miniac and a lot of other channels, but most of the time when I'm coming to youtube, I'm not specifically hunting down content, just looking to pass some time really quick and just pick vids from the homepage. I'll click the subscriptions tab if I feel like I haven't heard from a creator in a while, but for the most part, I've been trusting that if someone I sub to posts new content, KZbin will put it somewhere on my front page or other recommended. Dumb I know and I'll have to be more wary of KZbin hiding creator content going forward.

I'll tag-along on this too, as this is my experience. Most other creators I follow (and some I watch, but haven't subscribed) will appear on the home page feed, either day of release or later in the week. There is a high degree of trust I had that KZbin would have elevated your content when released. This could also be because of the less-frequented posts over the past years - I had forgotten about the Miniac videos, so I didn't go hunting for your content in the Subscription section.

I’ve seen so many videos talking about lighting for painting. I’ve recently started painting and obviously chose the worst mini to do… chaos legionnaires… I love them, but feel like I’m probably never painting these guys again. To get back to the whole lighting thing… those lights are needed for actually seeing the mold lines. I’m repainting so many spots because I didn’t see the mold lines. Then again it’s my first set of painting, and maybe no one can see those lines without holding it directly under my light. Also this has nothing to do with what you’re saying, as much as if you do another tip video explain those lights are important ALL the time. TLDT: good lighting is needed for seeing mold lines too.
