When I first started turning I made miniature items. I used Taqua nuts. They are a replacement for ivory. I made a complete tea set for a barbie doll. I then made a tea table from a piece of corian as the top and some cocobola for the base. Your goblet is really small. I will have to make some of them also. Take care and stay safe. I actually made an entire set with 4 goblets, plates, salad bowls, cups, a serving bowl and platter, and a table. It was for my niece. I didn't use large tools like you did, I didn't think it would work (I was obviously wrong). I ended up grinding jeweler tools into the shapes I wanted. You are the only other person I've seen do it (although I'm sure people do). The hardest part for me was to make 4 identical ones, the tiniest movement changes them dramatically. I'm impressed with yours, that's for sure!

Your skills are absolutely insane, and your presentation style is wonderful! I love the laughter; there’s something so lovely about a master craftsperson who’s got a sense of humor about the ridiculousness of the project he’s demonstrating!

The suspense! Every time that goblet was flexing around while it was still on the lathe had me on the edge of my seat!

Cocobolo is the reason I got back into woodworking about 15 or so years ago. It's an absolutely stunning wood, the grain patterns are just incredible, and the colors are second to none. But there is that sensitivity issue, and it's a big one. I was building a flat top mandolin out of cocobolo, and I had never had any issues with it before so it took me a little while to put two and two together and come up with an even number. By then, I had resawn it on my table saw, sanded a lot of it, planed and glued up a bunch of it. I grew up with eczema and I know itching. This was SO much more intense. The odd thing was that there was no redness, no rash, no visible skin issue. But the itch would not go away for three or four days, and after resawing it, the saw dust ended up right in my crotch. I was wondering just WHERE I got VD! Since then, I have not attempted to use it, and instead make due with other woods. Curly maple is a nice wood, and I drool over it every time I see it, but it's just not the same thing. Some of the other rosewoods are nice, but Brazilian is the only one I have seen close to it, and good luck getting that with the CITES getting in the way of it. Cocobolo sensitivity is a real issue, and I hear it can be very serious. And as one of the workers at a local wood store said, there are two types of people: Those who are allergic to cocobolo and those who don't know it yet. Be careful with that stuff.

What do you mean sanding is boring. I didn't breathe for about two minutes while you were sanding that goblet. What delicate work. It's amazing. I kept expecting the stem to snap when it flexed. If you had dropped it when you parted it off you would never have found in the shavings on the shop floor. My son, the falconer, and I were pleased to be able to chat with you for a few minutes at SWAT.

Harbor freight has something that will really help you, its a swing arm magnifying glass with light, i use it on my lathe when i do miniatures and its a life saver. I've got those glasses, and the hf magnifier is much better, it allows you to move your head back away from the turning more

A high quality soft pipe cleaner might be a useful tool for polishing miniature turnings. We used a lot of pipe cleaners to clean flux from electronics. The wire in the center could also provide some support that a paper towel lacks.

Ok Tim.... I’ve seen you do it now and I’ve think I’ve seen Alan Lacer do this with a skew chisel..... I tried doing this this morning with several different tools.... bust each time.... This afternoon I ordered a set of magnifying glasses with lights and a set of tiny turning tools. Hopefully the next try will be better... 😊

This was truly edge-of-the-seat stuff! Amazing! ButI can't help but wonder where that idea was born. Was it "Hmmm... I notice that fruit flies seem to like wine..." or was it "For God's sake Tim! You gotta cut down on your drinking!"?
