A turn does not have to be large to be beautiful. This is BEAUTIFUL! SAM, one of the BEST things I have done was to listen to and start turning left handed due to a disability!! Thanks, John

John, I know right? Turning with the opposite hand is not that difficult and can just improve your turning so much. But mostly it is all about turning in a comfortable position. Thanks very much Sam

Nice project for those little bits of wood you accumulate from larger projects. Particularly when you’re tired of using them for pens, bottle stoppers and such. Thanks for another nice video lesson.

Thomas, that's a very good point. I made this video mainly because of a friend who is visiting who turns of only miniatures. But I need to do more of them, they're really fun. Thanks Sam

Good morning Dave. Up early again this time about 4:45 A.M. Just getting to some of the comments and questions that are piling up. The billings symposium is all over, Allen Jensen is very good and we had a good time. He might be a good demonstrator to have visit the club sometime. He did bowls, Platters, and a really good demo on hollowing using the visualizer. Mike would like that I'm sure. He is also a master at texturing. He does just a little bit of design work on the outside of his salad bowls that are very simple and beautiful. Looking forward to your visit this week have a safe trip up. See you then. Sam

I really enjoy miniatures.. It's really nice to be able to take a tiny scrap of wood, and make something that's beautiful, and might even be useable for something. . . storing rings, perhaps. Very nice. When I saw the wood at the beginning, I said "walnut." YOu said some kind of burl. When you were finished, I said "walnut!"
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER5 жыл бұрын
Daniel, I am pretty sure this would was Chechen. I thought it was a burl but it really wasn't. But It was a nice piece of wood nonetheless. Thanks Sam

Nice work, well presented. Wanted to point out that Chechen or Chechem as it is known here in Belize, where it freely grows, is poison wood. Even when dry it can cause some people difficulties due to allergic reactions. It is a beautiful wood that I use on a regular basis, would say it's my favorite local wood
@oo0Spyder0oo5 жыл бұрын
Like 90%+ of woods out there it can cause eye and skin irritation to those sensitive to it, it just happens to have as one of its common names 'black poison wood' but it isn't poisonous as such. All wood dust is considered carcinogenic so just keep the dust down.
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER5 жыл бұрын
@@oo0Spyder0oo thank you very much for adding this bit of information. You are right about being careful with all the wood dust whilel we turn and sand. Thanks Sam

Great piece. What do you use for the friction polish?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER5 жыл бұрын
Patty, sometimes I just use regular old shellac. Or I you shellac as a sealer/ base and then put something on top of it. I have several products that I use friction polish. One of them is EEE and Shellawax. EEE is really an abrasive that is combined with a finish. Then I use shella wax or some similar friction polish over it. I also like the stuff that craft supplies sells. I think it is made by Behlen Thanks Sam
@pattyhines28355 жыл бұрын
Sam thanks for your reply. I use both of those. I just wasn't sure if that was a friction polish or not. Makes sense now. A duh moment. Thanks for all your inspiring videos. I always look forward to them. Motivates me to get out to the shop and play. Congrats on your move and almost new shop.

Nicely done! I really enjoy your explanations of what you are doing and why. What do you use for wet sanding?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER5 жыл бұрын
Rick, I use several different things for wet sanding my pieces. First I should say I almost never use water. It's not a good idea to introduce water to raw wood. This may interfere with the finish that you apply. Sometimes you can wet sand with the finish you are going to use, like poly or varnish or even linseed oil. You can thin those down with some mineral spirits to make them less thick. But one item I usually go to first is something you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot. It is a citrus degreaser found in the cleaning department. You can buy this in a small spray bottle and is relatively safe and easy-to-use. The brand name that I use to use is ZEP. When I am done with sanding with this I usually clean the surface off with paint thinner. Hope this helps Sam

2:00 can't the direction of rotation be also reversed? that way the work can be done form the other side of the lathe with the main hand

A spigot?? What is that
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER17 күн бұрын
Spigot is a term used more in Europe or England, but it is pretty much a word used to describe a tenon Sam

Am, Why did you use such large spigot jaws on your chuck as opposed to std jaws?.
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER5 жыл бұрын
These jaws are longer but the opening diameter for a compression fixing is actually slightly smaller than standard 2" jaws. The longer jaw set allows me to get in around the base a little easier. But really a good question.....Thanks Sam

Shouldn't wear watch while turning for safety
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER3 жыл бұрын
Tom, I see many turners, including very famous-well known turners who wear a watch. I really feel there is little or no chance a watch will get caught up in wood or a chuck. If I felt there was anything unsafe, I would not show it in a video. Sam
