For marking the base I use some paint or a sharpie on the wire, so that I don’t lose sight of it!

You're very welcome. It's always tricky but try to find smaller gauge drillbits and then the same thickness of wire. That will allow you to have more control over the drilling process, which is where you'll likely fail with a larger gauge. another option is to simply not pin them and make sure you get bare plastic to plastic on them. They're so tiny that you'll likely have less issues with them falling off the base for that reason. I hope that helps!
