I've been owned by 3 minis. My first, Punkin, I got in 1998 and had to say goodbye in 2009. She had kidney disease and osteoporosis. My second and third Laci and Heidi were sweet dogs also and totally schnauzers. Laci went into liver failure and arthritis at 14. She went to the bridge in 2021. Heidi is still with me but also in liver failure and heart disease. She'll be 13 in June. I have never regretted having these little jewels. If I had to do this all over again I would. You'll never have a more loyal friend, more comical one or all around sweet companions. ❤️❤️❤️

When I was younger I raised a beautiful Airedale, so I knew the typical sweet/stubborn temperment of the terrier breed. I've had other dogs over the years, but now that I'm retired I wanted to participate in adopting dogs that needed rescuing and I didn't want to take on another large dog. I now have a 13 y/o, female Schnauzer whose eyesight and hearing aren't perfect (some selective hearing involved here...just like my Airedale) but she's super healthy and still loves to run and hop and eats like a horse. She sleeps a lot but she's a wonderful companion and she loves to go out for rides in the car, four good walks a day (good for me, too) and a run around the park across the street. She also likes to run around the beach. She doesn't bark, she follows me everywhere and she's just the sweetest little girl! I'm so happy I found her through a dog rescue organization!

The Schnauzers my family has had were never terribly barky, unless someone came to the door. Our current doggo, however, is very vocal whenever we're talking to each other. He'll do this almost yodeling bark in order to join in the conversation. It's really adorable. Inexperienced potential owners, however, be warned that their bark when they think someone unfamiliar is at the door is sudden and quite loud. But they usually quiet down once they see that you're cool with this guest, or if it's someone they know.

My miniature Schnauzer didn't have any cons. He was very smart. When he needed to go out he'd go to the door and bark. I didn't train him to do that. I followed the guide lines in a four H booklet I'd had since I was a kid. I let him out after he woke in the morning and after he drank or ate and before bedtime. He was a graduation gift. He lived 20 years and was friendly with even strangers. He was silver in color. He liked to play fetch with his hair brush. At my moms house a big hound dog came there twice. He would attack that big dog and come in the house with blood on his nose. I called the neighbor who owned the hound and told her. She made sure the hound didn't come there anymore. When I wasn't at work he went with me every were. He loved the cruncy breading at long john silvers restaurant.

I've never owned a Schnauzer but have begun pet sitting for 4 mini Schnauzers, 2 boys and 2 girls. One of the males can get overly stimulated, seems to have separation anxiety issues and is dominant. I don't allow him to intimidate me but I do try to calm him when he becomes overly stimulated or when he seems anxious. I don't think the owners do this. Right now I'm with the 2 boys for an extended period of time. I'm with them most of the time. I brought my small female Ratchi with me this time. I waited a few days before introducing her to the boys and did one at a time. I introduced the calm one first and they were fine. A few days later I introduced the other more hyper dog. We were all concerned about this introduction but after some introductory sniffing on his part my girl calmed down and they've been fine all together ever since. They've taught her some of their bad habits like barking even more than normal and getting even more excited when I come back in the house. She's also learned play fighting from them. 😂😂😂. They're all hysterical together. ❤️

I have a 8 week regular schnauzer, she is very active, I don't have any kids, but have a 78 year old room mate, they get along very well, I'm having problems training her to use the training under pads, she will go in back of my computer or back of the T.V. set to do her duties. She is not barking yet, the only leading dog that I have is my little Chihuahua, she is 9 years old, she barks at UPS, USPS, Amazon, and the Mail man when he come to deliver the mail. That's my Chihuahua Terrier. But my Schnauzer "Maribel" hasn't barked yet, but she loves to play with the mail man.

My wee mini is a great dog, and for a Schnauzer is remarkably quiet. Only ever barks when the door bell goes or strangers are outside. Still only 10 months old so we are hoping he chills out a bit once he is an adult - currently he is a wild boy that loves to play... everything is play. He is stubborn but as I am the alpha I don't let him win, he must know his place. Thinking of getting another one to keep him company when I start going back to work full time, prob get a Standard size if I do...

The only thing that I would add is that our first mini got lonely as he aged and would cry when we came home so we got him a mate which solved the problem. Now that he is gone after 15 years, our female enjoys being top dog and only dog just fine. Each has its own personality and develops ways of expressing feelings and relating.

No dog should be left home alone for u hours and especially NOT a mini schnauzer! They are very family oriented and love their,people - they get their feelings hurt very easily - they r very sensitive. I think the people that make these videos ‘are just doing it for the KZbin money, they are not actually dog people
@SysterYster

Thanx for the good video. There is a sentence that is wrong though. They should bathe no* more* than once a week, but at* least* once every 6 weeks. You kinda say they should bathe at least every week but never more than every 6 weeks, which kinda makes no sense. ;) Also, I'm considering getting a mini schnauzer. I love how they are, how they look, they are a good size, I'm used to terriers 'cause I grew up with Yorkshire terriers. My only concern is the fur/pelt. It requires a lot of brushing (which I can happily do), but I really don't wanna pull their hair. Is that necessary, really? Or is a lot of brushing (with the right tools) and grooming (as in cutting lengths) enough?
@triciac1019
@triciac1019 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't brush my schnauzers every day. The best kind for them is either a metal comb or slicker brush to keep the longer hair from tangling. It also is very quick to get the tangles out. I didn't get them groomed as often either, even though they would have kept tidier. I would generally get them clipped shorter, and it would last longer. They are very quick to bathe.

You don't have to have have their hair pulled. That is for show dogs. It is completely unnecessary. Maybe even cruel?
@SysterYster
@SysterYster 2 жыл бұрын
@@karenbaumann7751 I've heard that it is necessary since their hairs don't naturally fall out. But because I think it's cruel I don't wanna do it. But if just brushing is enough to get rid of the loose hairs, that's totally fine.

She will be 12 weeks old tomorrow, Wednesday. The only problem we have is she wants to bite us. She has lots of toys, but still wants to bite us. What can I do to teach her not to bite? I would appreciate any help you can give me.
@karenbaumann7751
@karenbaumann7751 2 жыл бұрын
This is common and she will outgrow it. You are the boss. Maybe tie her leash to your belt and make her follow you around everywhere so she knows you are the ace dog, the head of the pack. The biting is an annoyance but not unusual with puppies.

Maybe one day people will understand there's no such thing as stubbornness in canine world. But to help it people pretending to know about dogs should stop spreading such BS. There are dogs that are decision makers, and others that are not. What we stupidly call stubborn dogs are decision maker ones : they absolutely need to understand why they should obey. If they don't get the point they wont obey, not because they are stubborn but because it makes no sense to them. Dogs like Schnauzers are incredibly easy to train because they are greedy gourmets. Give them a nice treat to congratulate a good behavior and they will very quickly understand why they should keep this behavior. This is not stubbornness but smartness. Also you don't have to be authoritarian with any dog, you just need to be clear no matter the tone. A bossy yet confused owner wont get great reactions, while a clear yet relaxed owner will. With a decision making dog this fact is exaggerated to the max... be authoritarian and unclear (contradicting previous orders etc) and he will think pretty fast "this human is a fluffing nightmare, I should never listen to him". "This dog breed is stubborn, you need to be the boss" is completely false and wont help anyone to understand their dog and how to behave. Change this with "this dog is a decision maker and you really need to make him understand why he should obey and be very clear about everything" and your lives will be easier.

I have found that being understanding and treating a dog as a partner gains their respect and cooperation. Schnauzers may be head strong but all dogs aim to please.
@Bloodysugar
@Bloodysugar 2 жыл бұрын
@@midnight4109 Indeed, understanding their way, and accepting it as it is, makes us able to guide them well. And indeed too it is a cooperation : we guide them in the human world and they guide us in their canine world. Establishing a cooperation showing we make good decisions to help them getting along well with our human world, gives them confidence in us. Just like we get confidence in them when we watch them deal with other dogs (if they were properly socialized of course). And so them and us get more heager to listen to each others. That's being a good leader to them instead of a boss. :)
