😂🤣😂🤣 Loved that Gavin. Esp the bit near the start - blaming me if the shelter was gonna be too small !!! 🤣😂 But you made a seriously good camp using that basic kit and the cooked food is always nicer than an MRE 👍 Yeah, you are right about those military capes - designed when perhaps people were not as tall (the original Russian Plash Palatka has a history stretching a couple hundred years I believe!). I’m only 5’6” and so can just about get away with it !!! Thanks for a lovely camp there Mate 😊👍

Cheers Giles, glad you enjoyed the video. Many thanks once again for providing the inspiration! I enjoyed the camp and will be doing many more in that style. Might save the Plash Palatka for fare weather camps though! All the best 👍

Leffe in cans... game changer indeed maaate! Nice to see the Sabre in action once more too Barney. Lovely relaxed camp, and as ever I'm impressed by how you never make life too easy, yet still enjoy yourself. Cheers. Rich 👍

Cheers Rich, thanks as always for dropping by. The canned Leffe is a winner for sure. I've neglected the Sabre a bit lately, but it'll be coming out a lot more over the coming months. I see that you've got one now, it's a great rucksack, very versatile 👍

Ah thats good Giles Binyon type of video. I like that guy. I'm thinking he's really short though. I did that when i was a kid. I used a 8x8 green tarp. It was fun. I just bought a 8x8 Bushcraft spain oilskin tarp. I'm love it. Can't wait for spring. That guy still alive.

Hi Patrick, glad you enjoyed it. I really enjoy this style of camping. Simple, hard work, but very comfortable and effective. Yes an 8x8 tarp is definitely the way forward and what I intend to use on my upcoming winter camps 👍

Glad you survived the rain Gavin. Like that set up but I think you are right about your 8x8... potential for more cover, less water ingress and a better nights sleep? Love your organisation of food for your meals I need to get some pf those zip locks! It is a lovely bit of woodland to chill out in there, thanks for another great video. Look forward to catching up at some point. 👍

Great camp and vid, Barney, and a wonderful doff of the cap to the legend that is Giles 😊 I like your thoughts about sticking with the same set-up and gear over the winter months - it's too easy sometimes to get bogged down with chopping and changing gear, when all we really want is to appreciate the simple pleasure of being out in the woods. Looking forward to your Dartmoor adventure! Keep it lit, sir! 🔥

Cheers TJ glad you enjoyed it. Yeah I just fancy seeing how things go with the wool and canvas kit through the Autumn and Winter months. Keep things simple, practice those all important skills and cook some good grub will be the priorities. All the best 👍

Good camp mate and I've been tempted to do exactly that after watching many of giles videos, I was in anticipation to see if you played the tune at the end and you didn't disappoint 😁👌 Can't wait yo see your Dartmoor camp as that's in my neck of the woods 👍

Hi Mike, glad you enjoyed it. I can thoroughly recommend giving this style of camping a go. I intend to do plenty more of it through the coming months. I can't wait to get on Dartmoor for a camp. Have enjoyed a camp or two on Bodmin and imagine Dartmoor will be great fun. 👍

@@barneysbimbles that's brilliant and can't wait to follow those adventures too! Unfortunately family commitments prevent me from doing as much camping as I would like but it's a stile of camping I would love to do to incorporate some bushcraft skills. If you ever need a wing man in the Cornwall area I'm up for a bimble 👍

Just discovered your channel. I loved watching. Maybe try lower the height of it to make the lower section wider for you to lay (do this when it's time to sleep) and higher it back when you're relaxing by the fire

Hi, thank you for checking out the video and commenting, glad you enjoyed it. I had in the past played around with lowering the height of the Plash Palatka in this plough point setup. You're right, it does offer more space, but unfortunately it was still quite restricted. I think I'm just too big for it, but do now have ideas of using it as an additional blanket/bivi bag to cover the wool when things are really cold. I've since started to use my larger 8x8ft wax canvas tarp, it offers much more space and is only a tiny bit heavier than the Palatka. All the best 👍

Nice one sir, lovely set up 👌 pretty much what I've got planned for my next overnighter. If I find the plash a squeeze I have some spare canvas to extend it a couple of feet so I shall see how it goes. Great video mate 👍 hope Giles watches 👍

My worry is that the plash might be a bit small for me too! so Im wondering about using it as a 'overhang' (A frame/ lean to) in front of a half lavvu. 🤔
@barneysbimbles
@barneysbimbles Жыл бұрын
Funnily enough I thought about pitching the Plash as a lean-to with a bit of an overhang. In hindsight I suspect that would have worked better. You'd still be slightly exposed at either end, but no worries if you pitch the rear end into the weather. The downside of the lean-to though is that it won't retain as much heat when having a fire out front 👍
@barneysbimbles
@barneysbimbles Жыл бұрын
Cheers matey, it's definitely worth trying a camp with it. I shall be using mine for future camps, particularly if I know the weather is going to be ok. While it might be more cramped, the advantage of the smaller shelter is that it will retain more warmth. Good idea re modifying, I think 7x7ft could be the sweet spot! 👍

Nice camp Barney . I was considering the old plash palatka to mate ( thank you Giles 😂). But it does seem a bit tight. I have an 8x8 tarp that I think I'll stick with. Nice idea with the food mate. Take care 🏕 👌

@barneysbimbles Жыл бұрын
Cheers Mark. Giles has got a lot to answer for! I think your 8x8 tarp is just the ticket. I'll be using my 8x8 next time. Will keep the Plash Palatka for when the weather forecast is better though and I think it will work better in a lean-to pitch. Thanks as always for watching 👍

No they certainly had a good nibble on me as I picked up a few bites, but it wasn't too bad. I took my chances on this camp. I knew the smoke from the fire would act as a deterrent (which it did) and I used a bit of nordic summer on exposed parts of my body 👍

You don’t have to have your plow point so high if you need more coverage drop the front lower and bring the sides out more .

Agreed, funnily enough I mentioned that in the video. Knowing that rain was forecast I sought to strike a balance between head height and suitable coverage for when I'm laying down. The bottom line however was that this shelter was definitely a bit too small for me. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

I follow Charles as well and have started to get the same gear. How well does the little fire bowl actually heat up the shelter and how much bigger is the polish lavvu than the palatka. I think the lavvu half is a better option for me. I’m 6’2
@barneysbimbles
@barneysbimbles 10 ай бұрын
The firebowl is fantastic, you can have a decent sized fire in it and it puts out plenty of heat to warm your shelter. It worked fine with the plash palatka and I've also not had any issue heating up a larger space when using my 8x8ft square wax canvas tarp. I'm not sure on the difference between the plash palatka and polish lavvu as I only have the Plash palatka to go by. I think the polish lavvu is almost certainly larger and more practical. Personally I shall be sticking with my larger wax canvas tarp for the winter camps. 👍
