Minimal Surf Fishing Gear Setup - Surf Tackle Bag

We take a cooler with 4 attached rod holders because we hope to catch some meals and the rod holders are extremely handy. The cooler actually had a strap for over the shoulder carrying, but I lost it long ago. The tackle and equipment list is pretty close. I don't pre-tie the rigs, so we take a spool or two of leader line, but otherwise it's about the same. Years ago, someone loaned me a 5-gal bucket with a round tackle tray and a lid. I really liked that because I could put the fish i caught (usually whiting) in the bucket below the tackle. And the bucket with the lid made a great seat. He rigged a strap for over-the-shoulder carrying. I haven't seen one of those trays since, though I haven't looked on Amazon. The only other thing we sometimes take are foldable beach chairs. Our new current favorites are ones from Harbor Freight with small trays and cup holders. They aren't super small though. So great for sitting and relaxing all day, but not so great for carrying 5+ miles

Good point! I do not keep anything in the surf. But if I did, the approach would have to change.

What a great set-up. Covers a lot of bases. If I recall correctly Mark Sossin said his father only carried a few bucktail jigs in his shirt pocket. Bring as much or as little as you want.

lol! We used to cast for bait at this spot... until we saw a 10 ft hammerhead swim by in about four feet of water. No more wading!

I carry them. There are backpacks you can get with slots for poles, but I do not have one.
