I know! That's what I've loved about the video, too. I stopped bullet journaling about six months ago because it quickly became too overwhelming to think of new interesting designs and color schemes. Now I'm thinking about starting again thanks to Kat.

@@janafromprague4525 yes. Look up Carrol Ryder who invented the bullet journal. He is completely minimalist. Few headings, no fancy fonts, etc. Just a functional tool.

It's that time of year where people are getting their 2019 planners/journals ready and I am so here for it! I also am a lazy person and don't think I will ever do a full bullet journal, but if I did I really like your minimalist approach because, again- lazy. Omg how you described it as part journal part diary- makes me want to actually try one right now! Great video
@iLiviesimone

I'm curious- do you find you keep up with your journal consistently throughout the year? I think consistently updating it would be my struggle
@Katytastic
@Katytastic 5 жыл бұрын
i'm not entirely consistent, like when i travel i don't bujo at all, so i'll skip a week (or sometimes 2+ weeks because it takes me a bit to get back into the habit) BUT i also have a "scrap" notebook (one of those cheap spiral bound college ruled notebooks) and i use that for things like grocery lists, or to scribble notes/appointments in, or to make lists like "most anticipated books" but a messy version before i write the nice version in my bujo. so if i'm skipping a week in my bullet journal, i'll probably have a messy weekly spread in my scrap notebook. i am obsessed with planning and making lists, so like i ALWAYS need to have some kind of weekly to-do spread. (i have a whiteboard 'weekly calendar' i use as well, and i also use iCalendar for a digital monthly spread.) I JUST LOVE TO PLAN. the 'executing the plan' part is harder for me though XD
@iLiviesimone
@iLiviesimone 5 жыл бұрын
@@Katytastic LOVE this! I have a 'messy' notebook too hahaha- I call it the great value version of the bujo or regular journal XD There is too much going on in our heads to *not* write everything down/plan/organize, and I am a whiteboard person like you too! Happy planning :)

Do more of these. PLEASE. The whole point of BuJo is functionality and all the artsy types are pretty to look at but I’d rather see more of the functional styles. Just real quick can I say I am sooooooo ready for Storyteller to be in Barnes and Nobles everywhere and therefore am thrilled you're thinking of going back at it! I read the first chapter and have a lot of theories on it already so I am HYPED. Also! You draw? I saw Inktober on your list. I did that this year I just didn't tell anyone. Do you draw? Loved this!!

This is how it starts. Welcome down the rabbit hole.
@mikethelma
@mikethelma 4 жыл бұрын
@@rachaelmarie3194 I am doing mine in One Note. It is very flexible and it is easy to set up almost any system to mimic a paper one. That said, I have had a BuJo in a small notebook for a few years now and paper does have its place. The problem with paper is that you can fall down the rabbit hole with markers, highlighters, washi tape and ... Don't do it ;-) I found myself here because I'm trying to fix a problem I have with the notebook that I use every day. In reviewing the Ryder videos he suggested to NOT copy undone entries to the next day, but to review them by looking at past days. That does not work for the way I use mine. I use mine as a productivity tool. Then it dawned on me that he was using his as a JOURNAL, in the classic sense of the word. IOW, he was recording what he did, not using it to help DO things. AH, big difference! He was also using his as a PLANNER, and that use dictates a different setup. This video is very heavy on the Tracking function (books read, videos in progress, etc.) If it were me, I might keep that in a Kanban system (like Trello, for example, or even Excel). The advantage there is that I'd likely already be on the computer when I'm looking up KZbin stats so I might as well use a computer app and copy/paste information. Likewise, if I were tracking habit development, or routines, or appointments ... a smartphone app seems better suited. I'm starting to see BuJo as just one tool in an entire tool kit. YMMV, of course. I'm still chewing on this but my suggestion, if you decide to mess with this, is to decide what your USE for the thing will be: Planning, Managing Execution, Tracking, Habit Formation, Journaling, or just making a work of art ... whatever. Then consider what functions are best suited for a paper notebook vs a smartphone app vs Trello vs Excel vs OneNote or Evernote. I think making that decision upfront will save you much time. I know that I'm looking at changing my layout for 2020. In this case, my One Note version will be a big help as I can prototype it there and run it for the remainder of 2019 then start 2020 with a more useful setup for my purposes. Oh, and last thought, one of the BEST ideas I've ever come across I read several decades ago (well before GtD or Covey) and that is to keep what the author called a "grass catcher". (A lawn mower metaphor ;-) It appears in some of these videos in infant form as "random notes" or "ideas", etc. It is a way of keeping your head clear as your day goes on by recording those fleeting ideas WITHOUT taking any action on them, knowing that they will be there later so you can forget them for now. In my case, I have a separate small notebook for those ... simply because there are so many things that come up that it would make a mess of the BuJo. I keep that notebook open while I work and just jot down a word or to and move on. No colored pens, no stars or cute pictures, and no washi tape! LOL. At specific times (usually on my planning day each week) I go through the latest entries and schedule the useful items or cross off the really dumb ones. ;) In the decades I've used this system, it has saved me incalculable grief. Just FWIW. Good luck with your adventure. And stay out of those holes ... you might meet angry rabbits!

I love that your BUJO isn’t all about the art. Primarily, because it’s doable for most people and because the emphasis is on function. It makes me smile , knowing mine is just as basic, but usable. As with all BUJO's, make it work for you. Also, love the idea of a reading list and that you include audiobooks as legitimate reading. (My primary reading source) Thanks for post and for your ideas.

I thought you were gonna say the gift edition was 236 DOLLARS and I was like WHOA I've had a BuJo for about six months. The trying-layouts-that-aren't-working part has been the hardest part for me. I love your style of bullet journaling! Every time I try it I feel like I'll never be on the level that everyone else is because I can use basically two fonts and my drawing is worthless, so I get discouraged. BUT I think it's time to embrace the minimalist journaling and tackle my 2019 journal plans and goals! I'd love to see monthly or even a half a year update video of your 2019 journal in the future :)

Hey Kat, this video was amazing! I've been just planning to start kind of a journal to keep track of my goals, cause I'm a master procrastinator. This has inspired me and given me so many ideas, and it looks beautiful by the way!!!! I think you'll do great next year and I believe you can achieve anything you want to!!!! Love you!! *-*

Really enjoy the simplicity. It give good inspiration to jump off of, and I dont feel intimidated by not being able to draw the perfect doodles

Please do more of these! I've fallen of the bandwagon of bullet journaling after a rough fall (my BA-thesis, what I think is seasonal depression and many other things) but this totally got med excited for 2019 and bullet journaling!
