I’m not really a fan of the books spine in (librarian 😉) but I wonder if moving them lower or dividing them onto two shelves, maybe a few laying flat with something on top would break up the clutteredness of them a bit...? They feel a bit heavy all on one shelf with none anywhere else. I like the trees and also appreciate the extra light and not too much visual clutter.

Hi Robin. I understand your challenges about issues with light as I'm in Vancouver. I decorate mostly with lights, mostly white with a single string of multi-coloured for a little fun. The decorations are silver-white ribbon with white & silver snowflakes, and a few other sentimental ornaments. Thanks for sharing your ideas to limit the overwhelm!

We downsized to a house half the size of our old house. I decluttered most of our Christmas decor, only keeping things I love, but it still feels like too much. Thank you for saying that yours feels a little cluttered to you, but you love it for Christmas. It reminded me that it’s only “cluttered’ for a month. We've always had one real tree because I didn't want to go overboard with decorations, but your video gave me an epiphany. I was trying to have a sentimental tree with all the kids ornaments and a themed "fancy" tree all wrapped into one. Didn't work. Now I am considering have two trees - one with its own theme. Love the gnomes by the way.

We have always had what we call the "Memory Tree" with lots of things the kids have made, souvenirs from trips, family mementos, you name it. I secretly always wanted an "Elegant Tree" so I finally let myself have one in our bedroom. Talk about a slippery slope! Now there is the "Elf Tree" in the playroom, the "Teddy Bear Tree" in the library, the "Teacup Tree" in the dining room, the "Santa Tree" in the sunroom, the "My Little Pony" tree in the granddaughters room, and the "Western Tree" in the gransons room. Also a tiny "Santa's Long John Tree" in the laundry room. A bit much, I suppose, but except for the "Memory Tree" the rest are small 3 - 4 foot trees that fit into a closet and require a single box of decorations. I enjoy each one and am looking for a place to put a "Gnome Tree". Maybe on the hearth...

@ 9:35 you're saying it still feels cluttered. I would get rid of large entertainment center. Or.... remove every other shelf so that you have bigger / longer shelves. Replace most of the little trinkets with larger items that fill the spot. That way you have less decorations & more bold items.

Last year was my first year on KZbin. I was SO EXCITED to go out and buy all the Christmas decor and film a bunch of decorate with me videos. I thought it was going to make me so happy but it very quickly brought me so much stress and anxiety. This year I did a much more minimalist approach and decluttered a tons of things but as I walk through my house after having decorated for Christmas there are a bunch more things that I no longer want so have been donating them. Next year I am going to be extremely minimal with my decor and only use the things I truly love and focus more on the experiences that my family truly values. I have never thought about grouping like colors together. That's a really great idea! I love your approach. Also I grew up in Canada and love your Timmy's ornament 😅

I enjoyed your video.. love how you used neutrals on the shelves. I also replace my decor when I decorate for Christmas. I have two trees, one in our upstairs loft where we open our gifts with family on Christmas Eve… I have collected every year the ornaments that are frames with the year on it, so my upstairs tree is just framed photos of family, my granddaughter occupies the most space on my tree the first one was in 2005 when she was born till this years her sweet 16 photo 2021…. My parents who are now passed, so their photos are on the tree ,my siblings, my daughter and son in law, my husband. These photo frames took the place of ornaments… Down stairs in my open house concept, I have another tree, but just with lights, no ornaments. I decorate my mantel very simply, and I display a nativity set…. In the kitchen I have a hot cocoa bar…. And that’s it. I donated three Rubbermaid containers filled to the brim, within the last three years… I do have a container that I marked RETIRED… and in there are things that my daughter might want one day, mostly childhood decor. In fact I might ask her if she really wants any of it, because she has her own Xmas decor now… LOVE THE GNOMES,and I especially love how they are all neutral, very pleasing to the eye 🎄🎄🌲🎄

@@MinimalistHome thank you. it took me three years to finally get down to one rubber made of Xmas decor… it easy this year… but it was one of the hardest things to declutter “Christmas” decor, lots of memories.. my retired box is a small rubber made, one day my kids will find it, and they can decide, but I truly did Swedish death cleaning, so they will have it easy, but I hopefully have many years till they find the retired box 😀😀😀😀

I would love putting up the tree so early. But we use real trees every year and the tree would have lost all its needles at Christmas Day. The smell of a real tree is fabulous. Our tree will be put up in the week before Christmas Day. Instead of a tree we use a advent wreath with four candles laying at our rable. Every sunday one more candle gets lit (first to forth advent). The Wreath is decorated with little figurines as well and made out of needle tree branches (like the ones Canadians use for their doors).

Huge success neutralizing the book case. Love your ornaments; fewer makes them more special. Next year, try a smaller scale ribbon so the ribbon does not fight with the ornaments. The large geometric straight lines at different angles is the most dominant element, and I would rather give my a/entire to the ornaments. Well done overall.

If the level of decor in your house makes you happy then enjoy it! The opinions of people who don't live with you belong in their own homes 😜 My struggle is always WITH those I share a house with, lol! I was looking at our already busy calendar and posited aloud that perhaps we should put up less and oh my! The outcry was universal! I'll continue to declutter this week prior to set up next weekend, and I'll put on the brakes as much as possible as we decorate, but I know I'll be eager to pack it all up before epiphany (take down for us) because by Christmas I already find it almost suffocating.
