Love this channel and the ideas here. I'm a minimalist and a musician. I've learned to embrace minimalism in my guitar setup after years of trying to do too much. I fell into the marketing hype for years and felt the need to be able to get a huge array of sounds. Nowadays, rig is an Esquire straight into a Carr Rambler cranked to 10. With this setup, I can play just about anything I want. I find that my tone is more pure, more musical, and more responsive now. And the overall rig is lighter, more compact, and more easily maintained. Please keep putting out content on minimalism and music, especially related to instruments and gear. I feel like a lot more guitarists out there could benefit from discovering the power of less.

Hi Jake, Glad you found your way here. Great to build the community of minimalist musicians wrestling with the gear choices. Doing the channel seems a little ironic to me at times, doing gear reviews while encouraging people to have less stuff, but really I'm just exploring and trying to answer the questions I have, make the videos that I can't find to help players find the tones their seeking. I will say that I'm tempted to go to a one pickup guitar and amp as an exercise but I seem to love the variety of tones I can get from the DGT's and multi-use is always a good thing in a minimalist multi-verse. :) Thanks, Keith

I do understand the irony of promoting a minimalist perspective and demonstrating gear, but consider that those interested in a more minimalist approach need to be more selective since they'll be doing more with less. I find that the less components there are to a rig, the more important each component is. Thorough research and education may be necessary to curate an inspiring rig, so your demonstrations actually have a lot of value to the minimalist musician community. As for single pickup guitars, I only recommend them if you find yourself not switching to your other pickup selections. I arrived on the Esquire setup because I set my amplifier up to sound great with the bridge pickup, which often didn't sound as good for the neck pickup (no matter what pickups or wiring setups I tried). What some would consider a 'limited' or 'specialty' instrument is my tonal universe. Keep up the great content, I'll probably release my own discussions and perspective on minimalist guitar rigs in the coming months.

Thanks for the encouragement on the demos. It also gets me to write original music for the demos, which has always been part of my goal for the channel, to have a context for improving my playing. I've owned esquires and totally get having the amp set for that back pickup. I'm with you. I find that I feel like having a drive pedal dialed for the front pickup very differently than the back. Not currently gigging and when I did it was mostly just edge of break up tones most recently. One of my themes is going to be putting together light/small rigs to do what some of our heroes do, guys like David Grissom or Robben Ford have pretty minimal set ups really but I'm replicating the pedals with mini pedals, making for even lighter gigging boards. I'm learning a LOT about building tones with this exercise. Hopefully others will enjoy it too. I'll look forward to your videos and I'll sub right now so as not to miss any!

I run a LP or tele into an 5 watt epiphone valve junior with no pedals. There’s not even a tone knob on the amp. I do have an attenuator between the head and cab, so I can get the dimed out tone without drowning out my bandmates. Sometimes I add a wah, but usually I don’t. I believe if you don’t like the sound of just your guitar into your amp, you may have the wrong guitar and/or amp.
@jroobz2 жыл бұрын
for me, I was tone chasing for years and years, sunk so much money into learning what I liked and didn't like. finally settled on a single guitar, 5 pedals and a single amp. I just don't need anything else for what I do and it's liberating.

This also applies to bass players. I play a Precision Bass, it's all the bass I need to play the music I play. I play through three Boss bass pedals, a tuner, bass compressor, and a bass overdrive. I have an amp with a single 10" speaker, and an extension cab also with a 10" speaker. It's all the gear I need.

I hope you're right about this. I found your channel a couple of days ago and what you say rings true for me. In the past 20 hours I've listed all of my pedals, to go toward a small amp that makes sense for me and my style of playing instead of my 150 watt amp where the dials are always set to 1. I've never been in a band, and I'll probably never be in one, and I have to get out of the mindset that I have to prepare for the day when I'll be in one (I need a boost to cut through the mix! I have not mix to cut through!), because that's not really what I want out of my playing.

Totally agree. Mostly what I have are toys, and I enjoy them immensely. Almost impossible to quantify the joy I receive when I pickup a guitar, any guitar. I do think the aspect of being inspired does still come into play, but a person needs to be a little more realistic about it all. That said, it's still ok to have a selection, we do with cloths, food, shoes and almost everything else, so there is that to consider as well. Sometimes I "feel" like playing a Telecaster style guitar, sometimes an acoustic or maybe a Les Paul. It is this aspect of choice and feelings that brings in the human aspect of it all, even though we are all different each of us can be different within our own self from day to day.

Really enjoying your videos Keith. I was on tour with Keith Urban in Australia in 2003 and found a book on a day off called 'The High Price of Materialism'. The ideas in this book led me to 'Your Money Or Your Life', which led me to 'The Geography of Nowhere' which led me to 'Simplify Your Life' which led me to... LOTS of folks talking about being content with 'enough' and choosing to enjoy that. I have to be careful with only 6 pedals to not obsess over if I've chosen the best one - just enjoying them and making music with friends is my goal. BTW - I posted a comment on one of your other rundowns and a very good friend from my Chicago college days saw it, and we've reconnected (he's lived in New Zeland for years). We haven't checked in since 1988! Thanks

I found my minimalism a few years ago after 25 years of playing mostly rock and metal with a pick when I switched over to finger picking and play mostly soul and jazz nowadays. Any tone chasing thru gear ended there bc I was no longer searching for a better tone to make me sound better, I was looking for amplification for what my fingertips were doing; making that guitar ring and sing. I learned to mean every note I play, to play a lot less of them and a lot more precisely. A few hours of daily practice with a metronome starting off very slowly and concentrating on clarity and articulation in picking and fretting did wonders to my playing. Any guitar on any amp and setting sounds good when you sound good. At least 2/3 of your sound is in your fingertips; your touch, feel, precision and rhythm.

Excellent, especially for not being doctrinaire. Our culture loves consumption but it also loves fantasy quick-fixes, one-for-all ten-point plans and fads that fade while promising enlightenment. What you say, instead, is gentler, more accommodating towards individual differences, friendly and workable. Principles rather than rules. Thank you. I know even short videos take much time when presented as gracefully as this.

It's not the guitars that get me, it's the pedals unfortunately. I had a great experience yesterday though, I went into a guitar shop and tried out about 6 different overdrive pedals (tube screamer, blues driver, OCD, etc.) all over drives I had never tried out previously and I couldn't decide which one I liked... Mostly because I wasn't blown away by any of them. I realized then and there that the tone from my amp is currently enough, and I don't need any overdrives right now. Eye opener for sure... Cheers

I got lucky, in that I got a great amp out of the gate when I got back into playing in 2021 after a 15 year layoff, during which I had no gear (never had much anyway!). I bought a nice Marshall tube combo, and have since gotten a great Traynor tube combo. I feel I can play pretty much anything on those two amps. I do get a bit of "GAS" here and there, and I *may* get a small solid state amp at some point, likely an acoustic amp to try some casual busking.

Totally appreciate the approach and your spelling it out in the context of music and the pursuit of tone, where it is easy to get carried away. My approach to minimalism for many years was to only own an acoustic guitar and just miss out on amplification and electronic tone variation. Friends asked me if I wanted to help out with a covers gig, so I borrowed an SG copy to prepare and have to say I was hooked. I decided to buy a rig but was determined to keep it simple, how could I experience as much tone as possible with one guitar and one amp? At first I thought it would be a double hum bucker guitar, then a comparison video by Mike Bradley sold me on the idea that the single wound pickups are capable of a thinner, sharper sound and effects can get you a long way toward a thicker hum bucker sound. So what guitar? Liking woodwork, electronics and music, I decided to buy a kit from an Australian crew, Guitar Emporium, with upgraded pickups, capacitors and other hardware and built a Strat style guitar,. I wanted to see if I could squeeze a little Tele in there so I rewired it to pair bridge and neck pickups instead of neck and middle and hooked up one tone knob to neck and middle, the other to bridge. I learnt how to do a full guitar set up from a British Luthier on KZbin, can’t remember that generous workshop name now... I then went looking for an amp and picked up a second hand Peavy Vyper valve modelling amp with with a Sanpera combo pedal including a Wah. It isn’t the most reliable amp but provides a hell of a lot of tonal options. I’d have to buy a bunch of other gear if I want to gig but this way I can work out what I like for sound before I spend too many more dollars. Love having learned my instrument so well in the process of acquiring my first minimalist rig. Truth is that I have discovered that modding my guitar is the other hazard that can prevent one from spending more time playing the guitar. :oP

Hi Brian, Glad you found your way to five watt world. I'm actually writing a script for a video with a working title of "Enough and the Short Histories". I make the Short Histories because I want to know more, not because I (necessarily) want to own more. The most interesting reaction to a video I've had is when I made "Exceed Expectation: A Blue Chip Story", people treated it like an ad for Blue Chip. I realized that any positive reflection of a company has become seen as a promotion. That separate from selling, there really isn't much good news. So wish me luck being able to explain this. Glad to have you here. Keith

Burlington is a fantastic place. I’m down in Rutland where there isn’t much of a music scene. I’ve been embracing minimalism and getting the best I can with the money I have. I no longer crave custom shop strats or top end Gibson Les pauls. I’m getting great tone from the G&L Legacy tribute and epiphany Les Paul I have through my Marshall origin. Not the cheapest gear, but fairly humble in the guitar world.

I'd say that, while two guitars and one amp are very minimalist, your three beloved pieces of gear have, and will continue to serve you lifelong, because you treasure them. Their good quality (hence, some more cost), will always be reliable, and that's important! I owned a little, used Crate amp when I first started, and then when I got into undergrad, and was playing coffeehouse gigs and jamming with a band, and friends, I bought a used Peavey Bandit 112. I kept that little Crate because I thought I'd use it one day again, and I still have only ever owned that Peavey, and it remains my only, trusty amp since...2000, 2001?? I ended up giving the Crate to a friend who lost most of his gear in a flood (glad I kept it!), which, while it wasn't the greatest amp ever, still was a good small amp, and we were both happy I'd kept it, haha! I love the few used guitars I have (an 8-string, my main guitar now; a 7-string, from a Sam Ash, beat up in the "demo room"--which I played and was my close companion for 16 years; a 7-string acoustic, hidden away in a little corner of a music shop in upstate NY, that no one wanted; and, the Fender 1968 MIJ Strat that my folks bought me when I graduated high-school in 1999. I will not part with any of them, and my gf will never let me sell any of them, either, even when we have really hard times, because she knows how much they mean to me as a person and my profession...which I can't love her enough for... Yeah, I'd say enjoying the gear you have is a comforting thing! :) Sorry if I rambled, haha.

oddfellowfloyd I also have a peavey bandit 112, though it needs all new pots. The ones in it currently are very noisy due to keeping it in an article for years. I’m keeping it as a project amp to fix and let my kids use when they get guitars (if they want them). I graduated in ‘97 and went to college for studio recording. Never graduated, which is probably good since most musicians record in their homes now anyway and I wouldn’t be using my degree. Lol Anyway, thanks for the response. 😊 Good to heat that you have a loving sensible girlfriend. Mines the same way.

It isn't easy to clean out. We've got this stuff around because it meant something to us at least for a moment in our lives. But the bigger thing, for me with say music and books is to realize that these things don't really "say" anything about who I am in the way my actions should. A guy in another comment on having fewer guitars, "that's a bitter pill" but he was really engaged in the idea.

Kieth can you help me with tips on making a minimalistic pedalboard. I got a mr crybaby wha-pedal, a MXR micro amp plus and a Ibanez TS9 right now. And I’m thinking on reverb, modulation, compression, delay and and noise reduction cuz I play a lot of hard rock and metal but want to be able to play other genres to. The thing is that I would like to have a pedal that is a chorus, flanger, phaser and tremolo in one cuz I rearly use those exept when I play covers. Reverb is just because I want to be able to use that instead of the amps reverb. A delay cuz much of the music I play use that, the compression I need so I dont have use so much gain. And finally the noise gate because too much gain. The thing is I’m trying to get that 80’s sound in metal

Going minimalist on the amp side was easy. I traded a very nice amp that I was not playing much for a Kemper and boom - all my amps are now collecting dust. I'm ready to sell a couple amps I swore I would take to the grave. It's harder to do on the guitars side. If I *had* to, I could do it. But I don't have to rob Peter to pay Paul for guitars. I can afford more than one guitar and I enjoy each of them and play each of them at varying times as the mood dictates. I wonder if Rory Gallagher owned only that beat up Strat and no other guitars?

I used to hold to this minimalist approach very strongly, then for whatever reason seem to have ended up straying down the gear acquisition path. Maybe it's time for me to ditch the pedal board and get back to basics.

I’m absolutely not anti-pedals, they are - it seems, important- but, I think I’m very fortunate because I’ve never been able to get my head round owning, using - or if I’m honest - understanding the hundreds of different pedals out there! I do have a secret desire to own a ‘Dane’ pedal - probably because Danish Pete makes it sound wonderful and crucial to own! Haha... Consequently, mainly because of my ignorance on the subject, I only own a Cry-baby Wah-wah pedal, which I have used only once or twice in the (many) years I’ve owned it. It was a gift from my daughters and I keep in it’s box, like a collectible antique - all pristine but unloved! Guitars? Well, I have 3 electric and 2 acoustic - which I feel is way too many,. So... with what seems on the face of it like a modest collection of gear compared to many, I KNOW in my heart that I have been bitten by the “buying - as opposed to playing” bug! I play at home - nowhere else - and biggest regret, is buying a 50w combo Marshall amp a year ago which I literally have used it only ONCE. I totally wasted my money, but foolishly believed I would benefit from owning it. WRONG! A £150 fix, that sits in the corner of the room under a plastic cover. I am much happier with my Blackstar 10w, which does EVERYTHING I need! On the plus side though, Five Watt World has helped me to see the errors of my ways and has, through this “virtual confession box” allowed me to feel a little better about the errors of my ways AND importantly, given me the kick up the a** reminder, that I need to get on with playing what I have - not lusting after more! Yes, I have sinned - thank you for listening to my confession!

But...those other guitars sound great and have been dialed in to be ideal representations of their respective models. It's always easy to sell things you don't get along with but in this case I find myself enjoying every single guitar. However, that doesn't change the fact that I only use some of them for recording and the others are relegated to occasional noodling or to scratch an itch of hearing that particular sound. Will I be sad letting some of these guitars go? Yes. But do I need them as a musician? No.

But it's seems based on your initial video on minimalist guitars guitar gear, your channel has certainly changed and has become way out of scope based from this video and other comments you've made. I viewed a few of your videos and I see currently you own a lot of new guitars, amps and gear again.. Way more that when your channel started out with and again totally out of scope of your initial mission statement for your channel. I know most of the blame falls on deals you have with certain guitars and gear companies after aligning yourself with large KZbin stars out there. Remember buddy, your channel is great not by your association or how much gear companies give you, but by the awesome content that you have in your videos. You look very tired trying to keep all of your associations and gear companies happy. Don't settle and sell yourself out, remember going backwards to the start is ok if we find ourselves going in the wrong direction. Take good care yourself as well.. get some rest.

I’m trying, I just switched from four DGTs to the new Strandberg guitars. These guitars are so much more comfortable for me they let me play longer each day. So this switch has upped my musical experience. That’s where I’m trying to go. Wish me luck and I’ll wish the same for you brother.

@@fivewattworld thank you for this video I've got my setup for guitar down to four pedals, one amp and one guitar, for my bass setup it's going to be the amp an external footswitch for going between the drive and clean channels and a modulation effect and with drums down to a three piece kit, thank you for the great content.
