Many of the great Master artists in history, Caravaggio being one of them, painted with as few as 5 colors on their palette, yet produced some of the greatest masterpieces in history. Doing a lot with a little. That's my definition and mindset for a minimalist wardrobe.

Start with taking inventory of what you already have by checking everywhere (e.g. you closet, dresser draws & luggage). When I was making plans for my summer wish list I discovered I had some over a decade forgotten never used wrangler shorts that fit perfectly in my wall closet. That discovery had me removed some shorts of my list saving me money in the long run. See what you can use possibly even if it needs to be altered to fit correctly "Fit is king". I started my minimalist pants collection with three with a wait & see for the fourth. Duluth Trading desert khaki chinos, dark indigo jeans, and vintage olive cotton slack. As for the fourth I was waiting for a sale on grey or navy wool dress trousers. Put yourself on the email list for clothing stores of many different levels (e.g. Target, Macy's, H&M, Men's Wearhouse, Jos A Bank, Brooks Brother, Ledbury, etc.). I came out like a bandit with the sales at Men's Wearhouse and Jos A Bank last summer and a few items for this winter I brought last week. Have patience and save the money aside for when the opportunity strikes. Stick to the planned wish list and do not let yourself get astray.

Dude shop at thrift stores. I pretty much buy 80% of my clothes there. I have a pair of Ferragamo shoes that I paid 20$ for and a Burberry coat that I paid 10$ for. Those are just 2 of my winners. I can go out and look like a million bucks and spent only 50$ .

My minimalist pants collection is a combination from Real Men Real Style and the Modest Man. The RMRS 162 rugged outfits from 15 casual pieces wardrobe video's 3 pants (1 trouser, 1 chino & 1 dark jeans). The MM minimalist men's pants collection 6 pants composed from 2 slacks, 2 chinos, and 2 jeans. So I aimed to start with 4 pants collection of 1 trouser, 1 chino, 1 dark jeans, and 1 wool dress slack. Later I will add too double the number of pants to each type for 2 trousers, 2 chinos, 2 dark jeans, and 2 wool dress slacks. For seasonal summer wear I have added some lost demin shorts, 2 baja shorts, 1 baja pants, 2 chino shorts, 2 linen shorts, and 2 linen slacks. This Thanksgiven season for seasonal winter wear I have added 2 slim corduroy pants, and 2 slim chinos. The slim chinos are light enough to be worn out of winter but are of a darker color in dark blue and dark red. Ashley Weston and you Jeff are the influences on me to try slim pants rather then straight leg. So thank you Ashley and Salute Jeff.

My apologies again for the multiple posts and edits, but in re: the video, spot on about chinos. If you are going for the minimalist wardrobe, classic tan chinos are a must. The secondary pair, as deftly covered by Jeff, should be navy or green...or for the those who want more variety vis-a-vis a third pair, grey is not a solid option. If grey, my opinion is that they should be of a noticeably different hue than your grey dress pants, maybe a medium grey, bordering on the darker side, as grey pairs well with most anything, including many colours and variants of brown leather; my preference is a tan or brown work boot or a lighter brown suede chukka. And if not chinos, look for a proper pair of lighter grey jeans that fit your form. Pair them with any boot, say, a brown suede chukka (not redundant here), a white henley, and now that it is winter, a tan cardigan (medium or heavier weight) and you are good to go with a classic yet interesting look that will hold up over time and likely garner compliments. And I say that with confidence because I am about to have a late dinner and drinks with friends and that is exactly what I am wearing; layers are your friend. The caveat to my comments above is two-fold: if you are unsure, choose what makes you comfortable, even if that means asking someone for advice; and two, choose colours that not only fit your style but also your person (i.e., skin tone, body type, etc.). This is simply my opinion based on my own experience and my comments are only intended to dive deeper into the dialogue with those who care to discuss this or any topic relevant to the posted content in this video.

What's up, O.G.? My minimalist collection consists of the number of pants needed to get through my rotation of days in a given period (anywhere from two weeks to a month), the season, or rotation of occasions. Like you, I probably have more pants than I can count. I like and agree with your choices, but in my own collection I tend to include a few pairs of trousers that are versatile enough to dress down if needed In color they are brown to khaki, a navy or black, and I have used a charcoal to grey. Probably my personal take, as I guess it is getting the trouser in over the chinos on the other end. Shoe wise, the bulk of my collection are Allen Edmonds, J&M, TBNY, with some other eclectics as well. Hence the need to go slightly more upstream with the pants. And even being a bit older than yourself, I still rock my Timberlands and jeans.! In the minimalist collection, I have two to three pairs of dark denim, and a couple of lighter colored jeans as well. Both go well with wing tips and my Horween leather Tims. In short, since my look tends to be more business casual and dressy as opposed to casual casual, the pants reflect that. But, as you state in earlier videos, dress your age. Your thoughts?
@TheStyleOG6 жыл бұрын
I like it Mark! you like I find it a bit of a challenge to narrow it down to minimalist choices..
@markgillum57096 жыл бұрын
@@TheStyleOG Right on.! I think in number I can't go below 15-20 pairs and that is using them in rotation a bit heavier than I'd like to. There are certain combinations that you put together for a certain look or occasion and that ensemble alone. I think depending on wardrobe and lifestyle, the idea of minimalist has to expand over time. Years back, 7 pairs would be workable. Today that's a downsize. I can honestly say over the course of any given month, 20 would be minimalist. Regular wear would be at least 30. Easily 10-12 for work/business/office, in rotation. Then 10 more for casual or after work. Then 10 for relaxed casual and leisure. So the REAL minimalist number is closer to 30 without too much repeat or mix and match ING more than once per pair of pants. And that doesn't include always seeing something else you could add to the closet.!

Great video as usual! One question though: What's wrong about single-pleated shorts? Having very muscular thighs, they are my only option for summer, given that they also have some elastan for stretch in them. Of course I would prefer flat fronted shorts without stretch, but they simply don't fit or, when wearing the right size for my thighs, look way too wide and ridiculous.

Hey Jeff ,great video as usual, question ,can i get away with a flannel shirt and a black suit for a company xmas party, just to do something different than everyone else, can i get some ideas? Thanks in advance.
@jeffreybrian26666 жыл бұрын
This is obviously a different Jeff, but I am supposing that said party is relatively formal but not black tie. Black suits are tricky, and in my opinion, reserved for specific events or when it is only suit that one owns. Most everyone needs a proper black suit for formal occasions/ other special events; I personally am not a fan of the black suits and tuxedos because of the risk/ consequences of being too formal or mistaken for someone in the hospitality industry (e.g., and server, bartender, etc.). Do you have other coloured suits with which you can pair your flannel. If not, stop reading after I make one point (most of which has already been covered: simply stated, as a rule that should almost never be broken, do not wear any black suit with a flannel shirt. This is not a dig on you; in fact, kudos for having creativity and the humility to ask for an opinion! What colour/ style/ weight of flannel are you planing on wearing? It could work with a lighter grey suit depending the flannel shirt that you have picked out or shirts that you have in your closet that might not have initially crossed your mind. If it is proper and too ostentatious with its colour (e.g., a light weight, quality larger paned flannel that would ostensibly replace a patterned dress shirt) you are good to go; the size of the panes is something with which you may play around, but in doing this you are risking that your attire will not fit the occasion. Subtlty is your friend here. If you do have a lighter grey, solid colour suit - so no go on herringbone, windowpane, or any suit or suit jacket/ sport coat that is not monochromatic or a that has a texture (i.e., velvet), the risk is much less and could turn out to be rather smart. Here, the shirt, if you can pull it off, will be all the accent and colour that you need. Also, if are deciding to wear a tie, that, too, should be solid and complement the flannel so that the shirt, your focal point, will do the talking; incorporating different patterns and/ or accessories, too, is tricky and will almost always yield bad outcomes for a panoply of reasons. For example, the combination simply does not work, the patterns are too busy to look proper or provide the right contrast, and, truthfully, you will stand out in a bad / comical way instead of people respecting and digging your unconventional choice. This is in essence a creative novelty, and by erring on the side of caution the novelty will, as stated, work on its own as it should without calling undue and negative attention to yourself. Therefore, if you have a lighter grey suit, a thin, deceptive flannel that could be mistaken from afar as a dress or business casual suit, pair those with or without a solid tie; that should get you to where you want to be. While my style is a bit off the wall, I have done this with lighter colour suits, including my summer khaki suits (obviously no flannel, but with similar patterns), and it worked brilliantly because everything else is clean and solid, making the shirt is the focus of your ensemble. Finally, if you go with a tie, it should, as previously stated, be solid and with enough contrast so as to be noticeable but not take away from what you are trying to do; this would also go for pocket squares in lieu of a tie, but that is irrelevant here if you do go with a flannel. But most any solid colour tie, particularly knit, square ties (likely the best choice here) that is not drowned out by your shirt will give you the ability to add whimsy whilst also complementing your bold shirt choice. So, light grey suit, flannel shirt, solid colour knit tie (if desired or needed), with brown oxford or Chelsea or side-zip boot (if you want to add another subtle layer to things, and, if oxfords, solid coloured socks that accent the shirt will stand up to any potential scrutiny at the party; here, you retain your style / aesthetic whilst remaining appropriately dressed for the occasion. My apologies to both you and Jeff for the long comment, but since I have my own aesthetic and plenty of experience trying random variations or combinations at weddings and several Fortune 250 company parties, I wanted to share my learnings; this is definitely not me being patronizing or pedantic. And if all you have is a black suit, that is not a problem. With this, you may still wear either a patterned or solid colour shirt (light blue is probably the best here if you go down that route), and it gives you the latitude to incorporate interesting, Maeco Parker-funky socks, shirt-tie combos, and maybe one or two accessories...this includes watches, rings, tie clips and other items that are standard items. Enjoy the holiday party and cheers!
