Perfectionism keeps me from even getting started. If I can’t clean the kitchen why clear the table? Or why put away the clean dishes? It creates a struggle for me to execute the mantra that I have repeated for years “Don’t put it down, put it away.” It’s the biggest struggle for me and my adult ADHD kids.

“Progress over perfection” has absolutely changed the way I think about my home. I used to be so impatient to get everything perfect (decorated, functional, “done”) and that has taught me so much about patience and contentment. It’s a perfect catchphrase when my perfectionist tendencies hijack my brain 😂

I love what I heard once about your goals, “be hard on yourself, but be easy on yourself”. Be hard on yourself to do the hard thing to get started. Hold yourself accountable to yourself. But be easy on yourself by not judging yourself on how hard it was, how hard it ISN’T for other people, and know that your reality doesn’t need to meet your super high expectations to be good. Knowing where to be hard and where to be easy on myself is a big help for me :)

I enjoyed this video Natalie! I’ve always been tidy and good at staying on top of clutter. I realized last year a lot of what I was getting rid of was stuff I remembered buying recently, mostly impulse buying. So recently I’ve been much more intentional about consumerism. My parents are just how you described your parents and it’s something I really admire. It is so so freeing to not fall prey to so much consumerism. It’s something I’ve taken more seriously too as I’ve become a SAHM recently.

My phrase right now is “I don’t have to prove my worth to the world”. I think Natalie did a great job explaining perfectionism because it is very much more an internal struggle than just an outward appearance. This phrase encourages me a lot because I can beat myself up for not meeting my own set of standards and expectations I place on myself and will blame not being “perfect” for why I don’t achieve things or look a certain way to others. Reminding myself that God gives me my worth and it’s not something I have to prove to the world gets me out of my head and allows me to show grace to myself instead of punishment.

I love the phrase "hard does not mean bad", or any iteration of that thought. I had an upbringing where I was not forced to learn much of anything, character-wise or even in an education. I didn't have much accountability or feedback from the adults in my life at all, and then when I was thrown into adulthood and my first job every hard moment was a genuine shock to my system. This phrase was actually a very new idea to me when I heard it a few years ago! Also, do you think you could apply the phrase Progress over Perfection to different areas of life and make a video series on that? Maybe just chatty, about mindset shifts in that area, or more practical, maybe even bringing your mom on for advice? I think of hosting friends in our home for dinners, homeschooling, gardening, keeping a home clean, making healthy food, and the list could go on and on. I understand that we, your audience, are in different places, so the next step in "progress" would look different for each of us, but maybe there's a good video idea there somewhere. ;) Specifically, I really struggle opening our home up to our friends. In practical ways, like navigating our kid's bedtime at 8pm while not making guests feel rushed, and making space in our smallish home for another whole family, but also in more emotional and mental areas. Growing up no one ever entered our home, even for playdates or sleepovers, so when we have people over it is so difficult for me to relax and feel comfortable, or be proactive about all the ways I need to make them feel comfortable. This is probably the main area that I look up to you in, where I feel furthest from where you are. I really admire how you've worked at this! If you read this, thanks for listening! Clearly I don't mind chatty Natty, haha. I'm pretty chatty too.

This was a great video!! Thank you for sharing. I agree with every quote but definitely the hardest thing to do is get going. My phrases that help me are “don’t put it down, put it away”. I can’t even remember which KZbinr said it but it’s stuck with me for years and helps me keep my house tidy. My other phrase is similar to a few of yours which is “little and often”. I feel like it gives me the permission to do a half arsed clean of my bathroom every few days than spend a whole day cleaning once a week which is how my mum and gran used to do it. But I apply it to everything when it comes to filming a video or writing an essay. I do it little and often and it gets done instead of staring at a massive task I don’t think I have the ability or stamina to do in one sitting like others seem to be able to do.

I related to your story about perfectionism so much. I was recently looking for a new job and got offers from everywhere I interviewed. My fiancé asked me why I wasn’t more proud/excited, and I explained that was my expectation for myself. Achieving it isn’t overly exciting, but I would have been devastated by any other result. As someone who is now a minimalist and has gone through the oh-so-common season of "Must buy the fancy new thing!" that so many of us have, I think it was a valuable and necessary season. I am now able to determine what I ACTUALLY need and want in my home because I previously made those mistakes of buying unneeded or fleeting. I think I would've always had the "what if this could be better" feeling if I hadn't made those "silly" purchases in my 20s. I think I'm a happier and more satisfied minimalist now BECAUSE I had a bit of a hoarding streak in my early 20s. Don't beat yourself up about those financial decisions! They inform your current ones, and that's the only way learning happens. ❤

"Progress over perfection " has helped me the last few years, but also Elisabeth Elliot's quote "Do the next thing." We're coming out of some really hard times, but at the moment sick again this winter season. I think this is the most sickness we've dealt with over a fall/winter time frame. Kids are stubborn and refuse to eat anything except the same 2-3 things. The 6 year old has rubbed her nose raw from wiping it instead of blowing it because she's "scared it will hurt" 🤦♀️ These just a few of the many frustrating things happening currently.

I can tell you that the first time I heard you say “ The hardest thing to get is going.” it clicked to me. I shared it on my FB that day and I tell myself that sometimes still. Something that has also stuck with me and I tell myself often , and it’s goes along with the “Progress over perfection” is “1% Better” . I too deal with putting unattainable expectations on myself. I use this phase to ground and ignite myself to just actually do something, instead of paralyzed by knowing I can’t do what I think I should. I know that 1% and perfection are miles apart but for me that somehow gives myself permission to just do something and that be ENOUGH.

That's a loveley video! I heard you explaning all of these sayings before and they all gad a good impact on me as well. I'm due wirh my second baby in 7 weeks. When my oldest daughter was nine months old we moved into a new house and we even remodeld the house since her birth. When she was 12 months old I went back to work. Ever since I'm a mom I watched your vudeos and they helped me not loose my mind and also to organise and reorganise and simplyfy our home. I've been decluttering since November and I feel a lot better because I can apply your sayings. Loads of love from Germany!

Great video! I’d love to see a video on your makeup routine and products used. I see people use those make up brushes but I’ve never used one. I’d love to learn more because your makeup looks great! 😊

When I'm facing a task I don't want to do, I picture myself at the end of it. I work a second job, cleaning houses a few days a week. This is done after my regular job as a school cook. (7 hours a day) so, on those days, I know the most it will probably take is 2 more hours of work, I picture myself at the end of that clean, walking in my door at home. I say to myself, " self, think of everything you got done in 2 hours today and how fast that went by! 2 more hours and you'll be walking thru the door!" With X amount of dollars in your pocket! Break those not easy things to do , down in minutes, hours, whatever it takes, because there will be an end to it. Picturing myself at the end, makes it goes by so much easier for me. Time yourself doing a task you hate, you'll be surprised how quickly you actually do it in real time. Set a timer if you want to. You'll find that the minutes to wipe down the bathroom or fold a load of laundry will fly by. And then boom. Accomplishments! Anyway I hope this makes sense and helps someone that has a hard time getting going. Because I do too.
