Walking 100 miles in Scotland - The West Highland Way - Day Five
Bridge of Orchy to Kinlochleven, over Rannoch Moor, passed Glencoe and Kingshouse, up the Devil's Staircase and then then the long walk down into Kinlochleven
This video is a little different to our normal narrowboat content so if you are just hear for boating videos please skip this series.
On October 9th 2021 Jo set out with her good friend Lorna to walk the West Highland Way in Scotland. It runs from Milngavie just north of Glasgow to Fort William 96 miles away. With the additional walking. to the hotels we walked over 100 miles in six days.
I decided to vlog the trip to remember the adventure and thought that a lot our viewers may also be interested.
Day One - 9th October 2021 - Milngavie to Drymen - 12 miles
Day Two - 10th October 2021 - Drymen to Rowardennan - 14 miles
Day Three - 11th October 2021 - Rowardennan to Crianlarich - 20 miles
Day Four - 12th October 2021 - Crianlarich to Bridge of Orchy - 13 miles
Day Five - 13th October 2021 - Bridge of Orchy to Kinlochleven - 22 miles
Day Six - 14th October 2021 - Kinlochleven to Fort William - 15 miles

► FAQ
Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.
Q• Why are your video's so behind?
A• We would love to release all our video's in the same week that we film them but that isn't possible for us. Jo only really has the capacity to edit two video's per week and as we make a video for each cruise that we do and we some times cruise 3 or 4 or 5 times a week we inevitably get behind. We fit in the vlogs around our lives not the other way round.

A gift the sight of the red deer....one of power and a good omen in Native culture...stark but beautiful. The Moors.. This I think is the best representation of what they truly look like.😊 I look forward to tomorrow.but I may weep for joy.for you both!!!!😅

It looked just like I’ve always thought it would! The only way to make it more authentic would be to join up with Hobbits and have them teach you hiking songs. Looks fantastic! So glad Lorna had a good day. Thank you for taking us with you!

Oh my, Kingshouse has changed enormously! What a shame. I walked the WHW in 1986 and we stopped there for the night. Never has seeing a hotel been more welcome! It didn't have all that building behind the old bit in your pictures, the bath water was really gravy coloured from the peat, the beds were deep, soft and warm, and the food was superb!

A bit misty, but the views were still stunning, and how lucky to see the deer! My walking limit used to be a twelve mile hike along the beach every Sunday, can't imagine what walking 22 miles feels like. It's been a lovely series, shame that there is only one more vlog to go. Take care

Fantastic hike Jo, and Lorna. I used to love hiking and did one of the very long trails here on the East coast of the US twice. 2180 miles each time. But it did take a bit more than 6 days. LOL. 8 months the first time and 6 the second. Love hiking but cannot do it any longer. So enjoy it while you can. Day three was pretty technical and you handled it quite well. Kudos to Lorna for hanging in there. You have a much longer stride than her so I am guessing her step counts were way higher than yours. Looking forward to the last day.

I have just looked at the profile on my mapping software, and even after just watching the first couple of minutes, it's obvious this is going to be the toughest day of the walk given the ascent/descent and the distance involved. nb, well done to both of you, and especially Lorna given how tough she found things earlier. I'm a big fan of pressing on when you can and giving yourself some leeway at the end of the day. Arriving at your digs, cold and wet in the dark can be miserable.

I biked back late from Rother Valley today, It reminded me how much I love the twilight. It's been years. :) Bright clear sunlight lets you see more, but... there's so much more inspiration in the half-light, and in mists and distant rains, too. I'm glad I got to see those through your camera today. :) It is nice when you don't have to count miles, but what can you do?

With the clouds, I could not begin to guess what time you walked into Kinlochlevan and into the hostel. How much time did you have to rest? You don’t have a bath in the narrowboat, do you? A really hot soak would be good for you both. Thanks for a nice wander. I am now wondering if I could walk it and I think with the hand crutches I could or maybe my walking stick. But under duress with nothing? Unlikely.

Kinlochleven, I grew up there. My family still lives there. I hate the place with a passion. Even as a kid I hated the place and spent as much time as possible at my grandparents. Now living on the other side of the world, trying to put as much distance between me and Kinlochleven! Friends and family that still live there love the place, just not my cup of tea.

The military road has a bloody history, of course, but on a brighter note, Rannoch Moor is where your route meets the song, or at least its chorus. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGmbl4GoqrObb6M It's a great pipe tune, but you don;t get the words that way. Tummel was to your East, and its Lochaber all the way to Fort William now, although some people argue Lochaber should be more tightly defined. The Devil's Staircase is basically the least arduous way to skirt the Buachaille Etive Mòr . Well, except for the main road, of course, but you're not here for tarmac and exhaust fumes, are you? You caught some stunning views of the Buachaille from Rannoch Moor. A hell of a tough hill, that is. I couldn't do it now, but it was a hard fight when I could. It's just magnificent! I can't think you'll have a highlight to match the sight of the Buachaille. Mòr = big (which it is - Mawr in Welsh) and buachaille = shepherd. The Big Shepherd of Etive. Good day. You've cracked it now.
